We want to encourage people to play ranked positions as much as possible. Our dream would be for the Weyr to be entirely populated by PCs. However, it's important for other players that these players actually get played and don't just become player owned NPCs. With that in mind we're putting in activity requirements for ranking characters. We like to think they're pretty lenient, but if you are struggling to meet them come to The_Muffin_Puppy or TawnyAngel and we'll try to sort something out.

Wings
Generally wings would number around 30 riders and follow a colour ration of 20% bronze/brown 30% blue and 50% green, however given the current situation of northern Pern this isn't a guarantee. All pairs now reside at Fort and there has been an effort to mix up riders to promote unity amongst them.
Weyrleader's Flight/ First Flight
Considered by most outside the Weyr to be the most prestigious Flight, the Weyrleader Flight is usually run by the Weyrleader and their Wingseconds. Fort’s current situation has thrown this norm for a loop. Where before there was the Weyrleader’s primary wing and the Wingseconds’ two wings, there are now two equal Weyrleader wings, with one secondary Wingsecond wing. One Weyrsecond is now part of Second Flight, although this is likely to change should the Weyr begin to fill out again.
Many of First Flight’s duties are facing those outside of the Weyr. As such they are expected to represent the best that the Weyr has to offer. They are usually the first called on to put in appearances where the Weyrleadership presence is unnecessary and they have more important things to attend. Many of their names are known in their local areas, but not outside the Holds they frequent.
The Weyrleaders Flight may be tasked with getting involved in diplomatic and law enforcement duties. Acting as mediators and diplomatic representatives is usually reserved for Wingleaders, Wingseconds and riders with the experience and temperament to not roll their eyes during a long meeting about who owns which field. Law enforcement can range from patrolling a Hold as a crime deterrent to active bounty hunting. It’s a lot easier to track down a bandit group when you can fly and they can’t.

Second Flight
The second flight is where the bulk of the Weyr’s riders are assigned and is the first to be expanded as the Weyr population grows. Their primary duty outside of flying drills is to maintain a wider Weyr presence. Their most common duties are watch duty and flying sweep in heavily populated areas. They are encouraged to visit Holds and have a smaller law enforcement role than the Weyrleader’s Flight. Often Second will provide the bulk of riders that patrol streets should a Hold request an increased Weyr presence.
Disaster Relief is also a primary duty of this flight. This duty can vary wildly and often the flight must send out the right people for the job. Some aspects of this duty are not especially threatening to the rider and dragon. They will be called upon to search for missing persons, or to provide emergency transport for healers. Other tasks however, such as tackling wildfires, landslides, blizzards and other natural disasters can put the pair at risk. It is likely for this reason that riders and dragons in Second Flight are most likely to become local heroes. A Cothold is more likely to remember the name of the Second Flight rider who helped dig their home out of a landslide than the First Flight rider who sorted their Lord’s land dispute. Although Second Flight is usually enough to handle most emergencies, catastrophic events may result in them calling on First and Third Flight for additional support.

Third Flight
Due to the current lack of dragons in the North the Third Flight has for the time being been disbanded. Most of their duties have falling to Second Flight, or have fallen by the wayside. Third Flight is usually responsible for the less populated areas of their territory. They flight sweeps across uninhabited areas and often receive watch duty stations at outposts or landmarks, rather than actual Holds. The riders in this wing are usually the first to be called upon to be used as couriers and trade escorts. Their role doesn’t hold a lot of prestige, but requires a good knowledge of the land, safer routes, bandit locations. In the case of trade escorting, riders may be required to defend the caravan to a certain degree. It isn’t unusual for caravans to have preferred riders.
Veterans
As close to retirement as a dragonrider can get. They rarely have duties outside of the Weyr. Veteran’s still run drills and have duties, but significantly less than a standard rider. Veteran riders will often have duties involving the Weyrlings, wing training and other situations that allow them to share their experience, others will take up more administrative roles to allow themselves to carry out a less physically demanding role. The veteran wing is usually made up of old or permanently injured dragons and riders that cannot keep up with standard rider duties. Some of these pairs are in such poor condition that they have no official duties at all.

Searchriders
A Searchrider can conceivably come from any wing and their searching must be carried out in addition to their other duties. Flying on Search involves an entire wing flying to a location and willing and eligible youths being presented, only the 1st flight have permission to ‘Fly on Search’. This usually only happens in middle-sized to larger Holds that had a decent sized population. Often the Hold will make this a gather of some kind. Depending on the number of eggs, clutches, and how many candidates the Weyr needs this activity can occur as often as twice a turn, to as infrequently as once every other turn. How many candidates are taken to the Weyr on these searches can vary dramatically, but the Weyr almost always selects at least one candidate to make the whole thing seem worthwhile.
