Appearance.

Physique. Stands 6’0”, somewhat muscular.

Hair. Platinum blonde and straight, kept short in a jagged cut that spikes a little in back. The texture is quite fine and soft, and will become wispy if allowed to grow.

Face. He looks a lot like his father, with the squarish face and strong jawline. He has a rounded, slightly squarish chin to match. His high-set cheeks are not so well defined but that may change as he grows. He has a short, strong shaped nose. His bright-green eyes are shaped much like his father's, slanting upward and with the epicanthic fold. His skin is medium-light and warm; he tans easily. His smile does not come easily.

Fashion. Basic, utilitarian.

Other Features. Several scars mar his body, one on his chest, his left forearm, and left cheek, all of which were claw marks obtained either at work by a wher, or by a firelizard.

Personality: Summarized.
Kalwoel, between his brother, his studies, and his overall shy nature, has a very weak social life. More than once he has met someone who, like himself, had grown up at Fort Weyr, but could not remember having seen him before. Around strangers and even his co-workers, he is quiet and unassuming, but polite and respectful if addressed directly. Otherwise he bleeds into the background (even despite his bright hair). He also has a tendency to put most of his concentration into his work, be it surgery or study, that almost everything else is shut out.

He has that paternal instinct, whether it’s natural or learned, that demands that he keep an ear out for his little brother. Something that he is not embarrassed to do is show his affection for his brother, which can be confusing to others. Some people believe that Futiel is actually the boy’s son, which he is not.

Personality: Positive.
Gentle, affectionate. It isn't just with his brother that Kalwoel is gentle. His bedside manner is calm and soothing. He does not harm patients in haste because he consciously takes a breath when he feels haste creeping in. He bleeds into the background when a higher-ranking healer comes to treat the patient. And when it comes to treating his brother he has that same manner when the younger boy is upset. It's just how he has learned to behave over the Turns. One thing he has learned with Futiel, however, is how to be affectionate. For a long time Kal did not really show affection, like other boys, but Futiel's need for touch has taught him that sometimes hugs and kisses are appropriate. So he shows that love for his brother no matter the setting. It has helped his brother thrive.

Dependable. One of the reasons Kalwoel is able to be present at all the important times is that Futiel's presence is allowed, so long as he stays out of the way and out of trouble. He's good at that, as he's had a good teacher by example. Kalwoel is willing to sacrifice his nonexistant social life to be in or ready to run to the Infirmary. He is always there to help. And thanks to him, Watania, the boys' foster mother, has peace of mind for the safety and well-being of Futiel.

Generous. Kalwoel has been known to give of himself and his things to his patients. For example, a plate-full of food from the kitchens has on numerous occasions been used to feed more than one or two. He has learned over time to simply fill it with more than he could possibly eat just so he can share.

Respectful. Respectful but candid. Kalwoel is always respectful, and not just of his elders. He treats his patients as people and not test subjects. He is also candid with them if they really want the truth. With his elders and superiors he has this way of tilting his face slightly downward and averting his gaze when addressing them. His voice is even and reverent, words are respectful.

Personality: Negative.
Enabler. Part of his manner goes too far when he babies and coddles his brother. The boy can be a crybaby but he needs to learn to grow strong and hardened to life's trials. But Kalwoel does not understand the difference between that and simply supporting him. The result is that he enables his brother to take advantage of the situation to get more attention. He is the same way with patients. Sometimes he only encourages bad behavior by bending to their will.

Workaholic. If Futiel was not allowed to tag along with Kal, he would not get attention at all from him. Kalwoel simply spends too much of his time in the Infirmary. He has to be sent home if he is to get anything more than a cat nap, and he will stay up way too long helping out. Sometimes Kal has to remind himself where to go to get home... he is just so tired and rarely goes back that way.

Shy. Kal rarely speaks unless spoken to, the exception being with Futiel. But with others his own age he never knows what to say, so he speaks to them very little. He cannot find common ground, unless they are another a Healer. But he is also rather bashful, and that bedside manner goes out the window. Why should he have to talk so much anyway? It's not that it's a waste of time, but it takes up time that he could be working. Oh. Um.

History: A Narrative.

Kalwoel’s mother, a blonde Journeywoman Harper named Kaeninya, was never a very good one. The boy was conceived at Fort Weyr during her travels, somehow she was able to remember who the father was. When Kalwoel was 2 or 3 turns of age, he found himself shoved into the arms of a total stranger, a blond, weathered man sharing his own bright green eyes. F’wol didn’t know the first thing about raising children, and while he meant well, in the end the young child was fostered off to live with the lower caverns children.

Life with Watania was a lesson in thriving of the fittest. It was not her fault, there were just one or two too many children that her attention was always divided. So Kalwoel learned to get things for himself. To learn how to do things for himself. To find his interests for himself. One too many scrapes and bumps lead to him hanging out near the Infirmary and learning how to dress these wounds properly. A broken arm left him with questions. He asked them bluntly and received answers with equal bluntness. It only continued from there.

Kalwoel had almost forgotten about his unmotherly dam, despite her infrequent visits, having easily become accustomed to Weyrlife, when she brought yet another stranger into his life: a tiny little boy named Futiel. Kalwoel was about 15.

This time, F’wol lost no time in handing his second-born son over to Kalwoel’s foster mother, Watania. Unfortunately, the woman was getting on in her years, and did not have the time and energy to keep up with yet another small child, so Kalwoel found himself caring for a little one he hardly knew, but who needed his attentions desperately.

By this time, Kalwoel had become interested in Wher Healing, and was studying full-time with the Weyr Healers as an Apprentice. Special allowances were made for his brother, so that while Futiel was not in school, he was tagging along at Kalwoel’s heels. Interestingly enough, because of this time together, the boys have become inseparable, and Futiel’s fascination with gigantic winged creatures has made him a possible candidate for the healing craft in the future.

The spread of the plague has heightened even Kalwoel's sense of urgency to become a Journeyman in the study of watch-whers. He feels that if dragons can get it, maybe whers can as well. And if they can't, he wants to study the reasons. What if some sort of serum can be made to inoculate dragons? That is not all he's interested in, of course, but he sees his interests in whers might run parallel with dragons. Also, while his father's dragon has not caught the disease, Kalwoel is grateful. He likes the big ol' dragon and wishes the best for him as well. He also wants to know why some dragons, like Hinaniath, have not become ill and passed on. That is probably beyond the scope of his studies, but he would love to meet another Healer whose studies run along this vein.

In the future he wants to work with Master Healer Bereck. He idolizes him and his studies, and may or may not have a student's crush on him. Maybe. Studying and the practice are most important, though.

Firelizards

Abyssal.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Pronunciation: AHB ihs sahl
Age: 4 turns
Color: This flit is the deep-blue color of deep lake water. In addition, bars and sections of lighter and darker colors band his neck, wings, and tail.
Personality: To everyone besides Kalwoel, Abyssal is about as air-headed as an air bladder and as dense as a stone. He is often very absent-minded, but like Kalwoel is actually a bit of a daydreamer. Sometimes sitting together staring off into the distance, the boy and his firelizard have a special bond that the others simply don’t comprehend.

Charrel.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Pronunciation: chahr rul
Age: 5 turns
Color: Named for the silvery-blue of his wing sails, Charrel is otherwise a deep navy blue.
Personality: This is Futiel, Kalwoel’s younger brother’s favorite firelizard. Like a black kitten, Charrel is very playful and affectionate, often nuzzling the youngster’s cheek. With Charrel around, Kalwoel can trust that his brother won’t become bored while his back is turned.

Obsidya.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Pronunciation: ahb SEED yah
Age: 5 turns
Color:
Personality: Very large, Obsidya is almost as large as Stardust will one day become. Because of her dark ominous color and less than friendly demeanor with strangers, one could call her the guard dog of the fair. She very protective of the weakest members, Stardust and Futiel in particular, without being affectionate in any way.

Stardust.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Pronunciation: stahr duhst
Age: days/months
Color: A deep, greeny-brass color, Stardust is what Kal thinks stardust might look like. Since he is no astronomer, he really cannot say.
Personality: The “baby” of the fair, Stardust is fawned over by all of her elders, just like a youngest child. Stardust has no qualms playing this part, taking it like a spoiled but sweet child. Perhaps someday she will take the role of Queen of the Fair, but for now she is content with all the attention.

Vanilla Bean.User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.
Pronunciation: VAAN ee yah BEEN
Age: 8.5 turns
Color: Pale brown, he is almost a chocolatey color except for a swirl of darker browns down from his dark face, down his neck, body, and tail. His wing tines are the same darker color.
Personality: Vanilla is the “old man” of the fair, sometimes crotchety or grumpy with the others. Otherwise, despite his lack of cleverness, he has a certain amount of wisdom that the others look to.

Other:

One may see him off to Fort Hold and/or Keroon to study whers. So for a time, he may be away from the Weyr.
