Between Two Worlds

The Quest to Preserve a Memory



Two years ago, I lost a dear friend to lymphoma. He was only 23 years old at the time - the age I am now. We knew each other for a very short time, but we became very close friends. I met him in my junior year in college (I was 18, he was 20 - yes, I was a college junior at 18; it's a long story) while I was waiting for my food at the university Patio Café - he was three numbers ahead of me, and the Patio was so crowded, we had to share a table just to wait. To kill time, we started talking, and we found out we had many of the same interests, including reading and writing. He was majoring in art to become a painter while I was in the speech communications program. Even after we both got our food, we stayed and talked some more, and we eventually made a routine of eating lunch together whether we bought or brought it.

When he graduated before me, we decided to keep in touch online since he was moving to another part of the state, having taken a job as an art teacher at a public school. He was one of the first people I began roleplaying with, and I blame him almost entirely for my obsession with it today. We would create characters and have fun with them when we could talk over mIRC, AIM, or ICQ - which ever happened to not be on the fritz at the time. He pushed me into writing a story for his graduation which has now gone lost, but he helped to create the characters for it, one in particular who I'll go into in a minute. He also loved nothing more than his oldest cat, Matthias, who I am naming the orphan after because he had a habit of calling himself after the cat a lot when chatting online.

Shortly after his 21st birthday, he was diagnosed with cancer. He had to quit his job to undergo the treatments, and I supported him online through the process even though I couldn't visit him but once every few months thanks to the distance. He stayed strong through the process for nearly two and a half years, but about three months after he turned 23, the cancer resurfaced, and this time, nothing could prevent it from taking him away. When it resurfaced, he was gone in just four more months.

I know this may seem extremely odd to some people, and I know some may even doubt the truth behind this - that's their problem. Greg introduced me to roleplaying, he helped me develop characters I didn't want to touch again for a long time after his death, and he was probably the closest friend I ever had outside the internet (not counting him as an internet friend since I did meet him at school originally). I see dozens quest threads for the Breedables forum questing to preserve the memory of a beloved pet - rather than a pet, I want to preserve the memory of my best friend. I don't care who thinks this is bizarre or doubts me. Quite frankly, I like to believe he would love a tribute like this.



Many things in Between Two Worlds hit home to me. First was the orphans - Greg lost his father not in a war but in an accident he never told me about. He was about 5 or 6 years old, and when his father died, his mother snapped and put Greg up for adoption where he was pretty quickly (just over a year from what he told me) adopted by a loving couple who had already adopted three other children before him, one younger and two older, and had one girl of their own who became Greg's oldest "sister". Greg may not have been an orphan in the truest sense of the word, but he was adopted just like the hybrids of Between Two Worlds adopt their wards.

Then there's the hybrids. In a spur of the moment thing, Greg wanted me to write him a story when he graduated and moved away. He helped me come up with the characters, but one in particular has grown into sort of a trademark of mine with some of my online friends, and it just so happened to be Greg's favorite character: Thagos.

We called Thagos the Easter Bunny from Hell because, well...that's pretty much what he looks like. He has long, tattered rabbit-like ears with a long head and snout which comes to a point almost like an anteater, but he has a full mouth capable of speaking, chewing, and facial expressions. His body is like a combination of a tamandua (Mexican/South American anteater) and a dog, the thick, sturdy neck and strong legs of a dog and the large claws and long, nearly prehensile tail of a tamandua. Of Thagos' many incarnations over the years, some have had wings and some have not. Some have been solid white and some have been solid black. The incarnation I am questing for in Between Two Worlds will have wings and will have the coloration of a tamandua.

Draekard?: Draekards are a species of furry dragon created by Adelle Crowe (Psycrowe). Furred dragons are an idea which has been toyed with by many, many artists (as googling the term "furry dragons" will show) which is the only reason I feel I can use it as part of the cross. Thusfar, "draekard" is the first actual name for them I have ever come across. I claim absolutely no credit for the concept, and if there was an "official" furred dragon, I would use it instead. Yes, draekards are likely very, very big while a tamandua probably isn't much bigger than a miniature schnauzer, but since Between Two Worlds has a gerbil/unicorn hybrid, I'd say there's no limit to the imagination.
Eye Color: Yellow. Unlike the reference picture given above, this version of Thagos should only have TWO eyes.
Appearance: Tamandua coloration for the most part.
.....[-] Main Body - Brownish yellow with a black "vest". Broad, muscular shoulders and legs with thick fur to withstand the cold.
.....[-] Tail - Long and muscular, tapering to a point. Coloration fades from that of the main bod to black halfway down.
.....[-] Paws - Large and shaped like a feline or canine's but with the broad, sharp claws of a tamandua. Black in coloration fading to the main brownish yellow of the body at his wrists and ankles.
.....[-] Head/Face - "Long" in the face with a pointed snout like a tamandua, but he has a full mouth capable of speech, eating, and roaring. Coloration is that of the main body with a splash of black going up from the tip of his snout to his eyes to form a mask as if he had dipped his face in ink. His ears are long like rabbit ears but are "tattered" in appearance. The tips of each tatter has a splash of black blending back to the main body's color.
.....[-] Wings - Half angelic/feathered and half draconic/webbed, very similar to the wing type of the male adults in the B/C shop Forget Me Not (this is not a unique concept for wing design as I've seen it many times before Forget Me Not, but I still stake no claim on it). The feathered part of his wings are the same brown/yellow of the main body with the very tips of the feathers fading to black, and the draconic webbed part of his wings is slate grey/black.

This is going to have to be a custom, and thusfar, I have heard two estimates on customs. An auction for a hybrid with natural animals ran for an angelic sash while a custom for a mythical animal was won for about 1.07 million according to Marushii who seems to be the insider on BTW. xd

I have also heard that donations IRL were used to receive some custom pairs. This may be my only option should Spazzy and Lil ever wish to open this option again. I am ready and willing to commission this pair with real money, so should Spazzy and/or Lil ever read this and they don't have their plates full (I certainly do not mind waiting my turn as I know they both have many obligations on Gaia in addition to real life), please drop me a line. It was unbearably cold, snow quietly drifting from the sky above to stick to already damp red hair and chill him further. He was half asleep when he arrived in the quiet wood, and while the bare trees glistening with snow and icicles were very pretty, an observation not lost even in eyes as young as his, he did not like the fact that he was alone. The silence of the wood was almost more painful than the cold, and all he could see in any direction was snow, ice, and bare trees.

"M-Mama...?" Matthias whimpered, his own voice nearly startling him as it broke the silence. The quiet plea echoed off the icy tree trunks surrounding him. He knew his mother brought him here - where ever "here" was. She had been acting pecuilar for several days, ever since his father was killed, but he just assumed she was sad just as he was. He vaguely remembered her waking him just enough to dress him, and he must have fallen asleep again after that. Nothing around him looked the least bit familiar, and he was growing more and more upset.

"Mama..!" Matthias cried, stumbling to his feet though he was afraid to move, afraid to leave where he had awakened just in case his mother returned for him. He huddled up in his parka, clinging to the fox fur lining for comfort as he called once more for his mother. Tears began to glaze his vision when he still received no answer but the echo of his own voice. He finally risked moving, pushing his way through the snow and crying for his mother. He was shivering despite the thick skins he wore and the fur lining them, but he could not just sit still - where was his mother? Surely she had not just forgotten him.

"Mamaaaa!" he called, his voice beginning to sound hoarse even as it was choked away by his quiet sobs. He stopped by a snowy boulder and huddled against it for a moment, crying and shaking from both the cold and fear. He could not remember where exactly he had awakened now - what if his mother had returned and could not find him now? He took a deep breath despite his sore throat and rounded the boulder. "Mam-" Matthias cut himself off with a ragged gasp as he stumbled back a step, red eyes open wide and staring before him. His legs locked up from fear, and he could not bring himself to run despite the sight in front of him.

The sun was bright through the trees, even brighter reflected off the snow and ice, and all Matthias could see of the creature was its silhouette. It was enormous, filling his vision with broad, powerful legs disappearing into the snow below it. Massive wings were folded against its side as it held its head up with its chest held out almost nobly to gaze down at him. The only features Matthias could clearly see were its long, pointed face and long ears held high above its head, each one tattered like a shredded ribbon. Its bright yellow eyes were piercing and staring straight at him, further freezing Matthias in place even as he wanted desperately to run, to be save in his mother's arms and away from this strange creature.

Its voice was deep and authoritative but hushed so as not to startle the boy, and it sounded remarkably like Matthias' father. Regardless, the fact that it spoke at all was enough to make Matthias jump though he still did not run as he wished he could have.

"Your mother can't be with you anymore," was all it said. Despite his young age, Matthias somehow knew the beast spoke the truth, and tension slowly left his cold body. He sank nearly to his knees, tears flowing anew as his heart sank lower than the ground covered in snow.

The enormous beast turned slowly, its long tail drifting behind it like a ribbon trailing in the wind, and Matthias felt panic grip him once more, terrified he was being left alone again, but that deep voice was again almost music to his ears. "Come," it said, leaving the invitation at that as it slowly stepped through the snow away from him, trusting the boy to follow. Timidly, Matthias grabbed at the tip of the creature's tail and let it guide him away.

This is under construction. It is clearly not good enough since it didn't make it to the second round in the concept contest to which I first submitted it.



First witnessed in the book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, the white stag is considered a symbol of prosperity and luck. Stags fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to be born with this glorious, silvery white pelt and platinum antlers are either blessed or cursed with the power to grant wishes. Hundreds of people hunt them for this gift though others only seek to take from the stags their flawless white pelts and the antlers which many believe are the key to their wish-granting power because the stags bear them throughout the entire year rather than just the winter. However, those so greedy as to chase the stags like this are always either unknowing or ignoring the one "rule" which binds the wish granting power of the white stag: the wish cannot be one of greed. Many a stag has been slain in anger by those selfish enough to try to bypass the single guideline and wish for money, power, or forced affection.



Ronno was young and naive. At only two years of age, he already bore a 10-point set of antlers, and the other stags were both envious and pitying of him - envious of his spectacular antlers but pitying of one fact - he was one of the Granters - a white stag. Ronno prided himself in being able to run faster than any of the other bucks and never took to heart their warnings to not stray from the heart of the forest, confident that he could outrun any danger. Unfortunately, he was wrong.

Ronno made the mistake of drifting to the edge of his forest where he was spotted by a human traversing the road on horseback. The human was quick to act, drawing his bow and readying his spear as he spurred his horse into pursuit. Ronno was slow to react thanks to his inexperience, and when he fled deeper into the forest, he was panicked and dodged around trees and bushes more awkwardly than he normally would have, his white pelt easy to follow. Arrows whistled past his ear and cut into his neck and flank as he barely avoided them, and he attempted to jump over an enormous, fallen tree in a desperate attempt to escape, but in his state of panic, he misjudged the jump and caught one leg on the tree. He tumbled to the ground and twisted one leg in his hurry to try to right himself and begin running again, and the human was easily able to overtake him, thrusting his spear into Ronno's chest to stake his claim on his lustrous pelt.

Abilities:
.....[-] Wish Granting - He can grant unselfish wishes, but practicing this ability is very difficult because of that one guideline. He cannot grant his own wishes nor can he simply ask any of his friends or his guardian to give him some wishes to practice with. In addition to this, it is a very exhausting process. Granting one wish robs him of his consciousness for a varying amount of time depending on the "size" of the wish which also caused the death of many a stag.
.....[-] Stag Form - Once he reaches his late teen to young adult/youth stage, he can briefly turn himself into the stag he once was, but he must first complete a quest to find his original antlers as well as come to terms with his death. Until he copes with and overcomes the trauma of remembering his past life and death, he may find his original antlers, but he may be an adult before he can finally run as a stag again. Even when he finally attains this stage, he cannot stay transformed for long - an hour at the most. Just enough to satisfy his desire to run through the forest the way he used to.

Personality from baby to adult:
.....[-] Baby - Ronno, due to the traumatic circumstances of his death, is a very frightful and bitter child. As a baby, he is very reserved, preferring to sleep rather than make a ruckus. He does not laugh much either and, thus, is difficult to entertain.
.....[-] Toddler - He sleeps less, but his sleep is disturbed by images of flashes of light streaking past his head, whizzing past his ears. He is still reserved and does not particularly like to socialize, his lonely previous life beginning to show through, and he prefers to play by himself, entertaining himself with his own imagination.
.....[-] Child - Ronno's nightmares are more detailed. The streaks of light shooting past him in his visions are defined as the arrows used to slow him. Whereas, previously, he simply did not like the company of others, he now becomes distrustful of anyone but his guardian and toddlerhood friends but does not yet understand why. He begins to seek refuge in books, preferring happy fairy tales and still entertains his own imagination. He might create an imaginary friend to talk to and play with, but his greatest pleasure is in books even if his reading skills are still developing.
.....[-] Teenager - The nightmares truly disturb his sleep, tormenting him with visions of arrows in his memory like shards of ice whizzing past his ears, some aflame as if shot from Hell itself to slay him, and green and brown trees and shrubs streaking away from him as he flees his persuer. Now understanding who he used to be, Ronno is forced to combat panic attacks and will refuse to open himself to anyone he did not grow up with out of distrust. Strangers were responsible for his death, and strangers will not be trusted. He now takes great joy in physical activity, particularly running and jumping as he used to as a stag, but his greatest refuge is still books, now more sophisticated writing styles and genres. He now also understands what he is capable of though does not quite understand the one "rule" of his power - no wishes may be granted for selfish reasons. If he could grant those wishes, he would rid himself of the fear and nightmares, but he can't, and that frustrates him.
.....[-] Youth - He is still riddled with nightmares and distrust, but he slowly begins to accept his former fate and that he must cope with it if he is ever to succeed in his new life. The panic attacks still happen, but he is better able to cope with and recover from them. He still greatly enjoys reading and running, but it is difficult to practice his newly understood power with its guideline. He cannot simply ask his guardian or few friends to make wishes for him to try to grant because they would be selfish wishes and, thus, ungrantable. Still, he would love to master the ability again.
.....[-] Adult - Ronno has finally come to terms with his previous demise but is still mastering his wish granting ability. He is more enthusiastic than ever and is slowly beginning to open himself to other people though he remains wary of letting just anyone know what he is capable of, afraid for a repeat of his previous life. He remains close to his guardian who helped and supported him throughout his arduous second life.
Hair and eye colors: Silvery white hair just as his pelt was before his death. His eyes, however, are stained a deep red, marred with the anger and hatred he bore in his heart when he was killed.
Physical Description From Wand-Adult:
.....[-] Wand - The shaft of the wand is black like obsidian to mirror the one break from his silvery white sheen as a stag - his stark black nose. The head of the wand is in the shape of the head of a stag with its head lowered to charge, colored like the platinum of his antlers in his previous life. The stag head is adorned with metallic antlers curved gracefully into ten prongs.
.....[-] Baby Ghost - Like white smoke, the ghost encircles its wand, occassionally taking the shape of the head of a fawn before returning to an intangible lump of smoke.
.....[-] Baby - Ronno's skin is pale like alabaster, and his red eyes are piercing though lacking the malice and hatred which formed their color. His skin is marred by a large, diagonal scar over his chest where the killing blow was landed by the hunter's spear, and many other, similar scars on the sides of his neck from arrows including one slashing vertically down his throat and one horizontally over his forehead.
.....[-] Toddler - Ronno prefers to let his hair grow out, so his hair is rather shaggy-looking, still its silvery color though. A little more color has returned to his skin, but it's still very pale and likely will be for the remainder of his growth. He likes baggy clothes and is particularly fond of an old, faded blue shirt of his guardian's which envelops his whole body and hangs off one shoulder. Hidden in his hair are two lumps in his skull beginning to pronounce themselves.
.....[-] Child - He still prefers to wear that favorite shirt though it fits better now. He wears whatever pants he feels are comfortable and prefers to only wear socks rather than shoes to go with them. He still lets his hair grow out though his guardian has been able to convince him to let her trim it. His hair overall is short, but his bangs are long, chin length and frame his face. At this point, two antlers with two nubs each have begun to peek out of his hair at the top of his head though they are not yet large enough to truly get in the way of brushing or washing his hair.
.....[-] Teenager - The hairstyle his guardian gave him is how he keeps his hair, but he has unfortunately outgrown her old shirt. Regardless, he still likes baggy clothes. His body is slender and frail just like the deer he used to be though his pale skin is still marred by those scars. Now that he knows why he has them, he prefers to hide them, wearing a bandana or scarf constantly, even in the summer, to leave no part of his neck or throat exposed and usually using a bandana or even his guardian's makeup to hide the gaping scar on his forehead. His happy, childish face is now haunted by his nightmares despite how much he tries to hide it, and his inability to get a good night's sleep due to them darkens his eyes. His antlers have grown much more obvious though only bearing three prongs apiece and curling over his head to the front. They are the same platinum they were in his previous life, but now the tips are blackened as if they were shoved into the embers of a dying fire and burned.
.....[-] Youth - As a youth, he does not look much different from when he was a teenager, but the darkness of fatigue and trauma is leaving his eyes as he copes with his previous life and death and can get a better night's sleep. With this acceptance also comes a reluctant acceptance of his more physical reminders of his previous life. The bandana kept around his neck is still there but loosened slightly as he slowly allows himself to trust enough to expose the scars on his neck and throat. The forehead scar is now left exposed for the most part despite how it detracts from his overall appearance as the largest of all the scars from the neck up, greyish and gaping like parted lips. Again, he keeps his hair the same as it was when he grew up - short all over save for the long bangs framing his face. His antlers are even more impressive now and bear four prongs each, the tip of each prong still blackened, possibly a remnant of the hatred and bitterness he died with in his previous life just as the color of his eyes.
.....[-] Adult - The only differences between adulthood and youth are the healthy glow of his skin from the restful nights he has having fully accepted and coped with his past. Nightmares do not prevent him from sleeping anymore, and although he still likes to wear a bandana or scarf, he leaves the scars exposed for the most part. Baggy clothes are still his favorite attire as they enable him full range of movement without constrictions. His antlers are regal in appearance, bearing five prongs each for a total of ten points just as in his previous life.
Distinctive Marks: A ragged, diagonal (his left-to-right) scar mars his chest. Smaller, horizontal scars slash across the sides of his neck, alarmingly dark against his pale skin. Four are on the right side of his neck and three tear across the left. One more scar slashes down his throat vertically where the hunter began skinning him before he was completely dead in his previous life. A final scar mars his forehead, gaping like parted lips and greatly detracting from his overall appearance, dark grey against his pale skin where his antlers were scalped from his head. His antlers could also possibly qualify as distinctive marks, curving gracefully over his head with their platinum shafts and blackened prongs. Beautiful as they are though, they make washing his hair a tedious ordeal.
General likes and dislikes: He despises strangers and is extremely distrustful of anyone he does not grow up with even as a young adult. It is only his desire to learn to master his power to grant wishes that he finally begins to open up his trust and allow people close to him though still not too close. He loves to read though, sometimes completely losing himself for over a day in a book. His imagination is his sanctuary.
Hobbies: He spends more time reading than anything else, but he also finds great enjoyment in a brisk run around his guardian's property, dashing through the woods and dodging around trees and shrubs despite those maneuvers sometimes triggering his panic attacks. Once his antlers fully develop, he takes an almost absurd pleasure in rubbing them against things - anything from rocks to trees to furniture much to his guardian's dismay. The feeling of antler against solid surface is delight in its purest form to him.

Quite possibly the most reasonably priced custom RP-mandatory breedable I've seen. I'll more than likely be able to afford Ronno before any of the others if I save my gold right.

As a teenager/adult he sticks closer to Eric than before, helping him through rough times and determined to always be there for him, especially as Eric's disease progresses.

Issues In Brief: Abusive father, dead mother, homosexuality, lung disease
Personality: He appears to be tired constantly, but he's always ready to jump at the chance to help his few friends with anything they need him for. He cares for Matthias lovingly and views him as the little brother he never had. Eric holds no hard feelings toward his father for the way he's changed since his mother's death, but it's difficult to just roll with the way he was so abruptly disowned for his sexual preference. He's not openly gay after what happened the last time he was open about it and prefers to just keep it a secret which is just fine by Matthias.
Notes: Eric has Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). He has had it all his life, but it wasn't until he turned 16 that it began truly affecting him. His coughing spells are few for now, but they can sometimes produce blood and leave him breathless. His parents were paying for his antibiotics until his mother's death, and since then he has been forced to go without, hoping to make it through college and get a job with health benefits so as to begin taking medication again and increase his quality of life. Matthias is the light of his day during these episodes.
