Danica's father was one of the lesser known Outriders within the ranks, although he was not without a fine head of antlers and good strength and looks. He was not, however, very eager on the subject of harems and offspring, and he would only rarely take up a challenge during Anlach. For years, this strange stag took no hinds into his harem, which in turn led to the lack of younglings of his blood running through the herd. He didn't quite seem to mind, ever, and when asked about it, he would often shake his head with a small smile and change the topic.

Danica's mother was a highly attractive hind, and she was fully aware of her beau. She was not born with a flare for arrogance. Instead, she was kind and caring, and she found the strange haremless stag quite a wonder. When she matured enough to carry offspring, she attended her first Anlach, and was taken into a harem by one of the more upfront and forward stags. Before any of the hinds in the harem were covered, however, the courageous stag met his end in a run-in with a hunting party.

So that was that.

The next Anlach, Danica's mother did not show, and she was not taken into any harem. The year after, she made her highly anticipated arrival to Anlach. Before any fighting started, she made her way to the strange stag she had taken so highly to, and chose him, instead of being chosen by any other. The turn of events brought minor protests, but many of the Outriders thought it only fair, for even the lesser known stags ought to have offspring as well.

She and another older hind were the only two the stag incorporated into his harem that year, and after the arrival of a stillborn calf from the older hind, Danica's birth brought joy and relief sweeping through the entire herd. Her father was, while not well known, a staunch friend and was well-loved by all his fellow Outriders. The stag was rather inspired by this, and the next Anlach, his the number to his harem rose.

It soon became obvious that while Danica had inherited many of her father's physical traits, she had her mother's eyes and her temperament. She was kind and gentle, but calm and bold at the same time. As a fawn, she once had a run-in with a baby fox, but rather than taking a mad dash for the safety of her mother's side, she had decided to sniff it all over before turning gracefully and stalking away from the bushes. While to some, it may have seemed the ultimate act of foolishness, her mother knew it was more. Danica had purposely disregarded the known danger that where there was a youngster, there was an adult, and had gone to great lengths (at least for a fawn) to understand why foxes were to be so feared. Of course, in getting to know a baby fox, she had found little evidence.

As Danica grew, so did her interest in bucks, a trait that was found in neither her mother or (thank Herne) her father. Her mother found it strange, but did little to question the interest, as she found that the relationship between herself and Danica had grown a little strained ever since she had become a find young doe, and the last thing she wanted was to worsen their situation.

When Danica took one night away from her mother and spent it with a good friend of hers, their relationship gave way and collapsed. Danica's mother was furious at her, while the doe was angry that she could not display some indepedence without being yelled at. Their fallout became permanent, as Danica cut her mother out of her life and went to live in the company of her fellow doe friends.

Toward the end of her fawnhood, Danica had noticed a buck, only perhaps a summer, most probably less, older than herself, with eyes of different colors - one blue and one amber. Soon after, however, the buck disappeared, and like her mother, he was forgotten, her brief glimpses of him on Corps duty became like dreams. But his eyes were the one thing about him that stayed within her memory, burned there like a scar that she had chosen to have, but had forgotten why.

As the summers progressed, Danica and her small group of close friends witnessed Anlach. Unlike a few of the other does, who found the idea of knocking antlers and fighting quite the turn off, Danica was fascinated with the process of the hinds joining stags' harems, and she, along with a few of her friends, broke off from their main group and learned to box with each other. Their skill at boxing increased exponentially over the seasons, and it soon spread like wildfire through the herd, the rumor of the boxing does.

By the time Danica and her boxing friends matured into hinds, her reputation as the fiercest boxer in the Lowlands was well-known, especially to the stags within the herd. Many tried to make a bid for her entrance to their harem, but she did not show, surprisingly, at the first Anlach. She stayed away, just as her mother had so many years ago, to avoid any stags fighting over her.

Many of her old friends joined harems, but Danica's tight ring of a quarter score boxers did not. During the year following their first Anlach, the five hinds continued to box, often in the seclusion of the forests, but never during the night. She and her friends had good sense enough about them to recognize that while they were good with boxing, it hardly made them invincible to dangers that posed themselves at night.

The following Anlach, she still did not show, although two of their number of five did and joined different harems. The boxers were splitting. But still, the hind did not yield. It was as if she were waiting for something - someone. But even she herself had little clue as to what, or who, she was waiting on. Something inside her simply told her no, and she listened.

Then the buck she had seen as a fawn returned. Returned and swiftly raised his rank within the Outriders, his reputation of courage and quick thinking flaring through the herd, and even beat out his father to become the new Lord of the Herd. It was then that Danica knew who she had been waiting for. She had been waiting for him, that stag with the opposite colored eyes, whose gaze, she found, could penetrate her soul.

The Anlach the stag, Fell Lore, became Lord, Danica made her first appearance at Anlach. She sought out the new Lord, and for half a moment, she could feel their gazes locking, and that alone sent a shockwave through her like nothing ever before. And she could tell by the way Fell shook his antlers that what had happened with her had taken the same effect on him.

She had expected him to fight for her. He didn't. He simply stood to one side, fighting whenever the challenge came up, but never challenging anyone. He simply stood and watched her. Watched her from afar, as if drawn to her by the same mystical force that drew her to him. And yet, he made no effort. She found him grazing in the meadow the next day, but finding she knew not of what to say to him in a confrontation, she left. She was sure he knew, somehow, that she was there.

The seasons passed ever so swiftly again, and still he did not fight for her. When Anlach was near over, she approached him, and tried to tell him she had chosen to join his harem. Though he would not hear of it. All he did was smile, smile and gaze down at her with his wonderful eyes, and told her it was all okay. That it wasn't her duty to do such a thing, but that she had opened his eyes. And then he fought for her.

Fell Lore. It's good to know the Lord so well. If he seems a little scary... well, he's not.
Artair. Such a sweet little boy. He's probably the best son any deer has ever had.
