The gray hind grazed in the shade of the trees, kept cool from the heat of the day. The sounds of rutting stags reverberated across the land from dawn till dusk, and then deep into the night. She suddenly realized she missed the thrill of participating in Anlach, watching the stags fight, and perhaps boxing with her friends. But at least she was with Fell, she reasoned. Being in Fell's harem was better than participating in a thousand Anlachs, and she knew it.
The heat of the midday sun had brought sleep wafting through the herd, so that many of the hinds and does had fallen asleep in the sunlight. The land was still -almost too still, save for the constant clacking of the stags' antlers far away.

Brandur used the shade to his advantage. His colors blended in well with the surrounding area. He let a soft growl escape his muzzle as he eyed the grazing hind. He hunkered down and dug his claws into the soft earth, finding the best way to attack her.
Steathly he crept out of the bushes that were hiding him. Carefully... carefully... He paused to wag his tail and bristle his fur. He inhaled. Good no male deer around the area. The Anlach was keeping their attention. He stepped forward again but this time his paw landed on a well hidden branch, cracking it.
Oh dear...

Danica started, her half closed eyes snapping open as she whirled toward the sound of the snapping branch. "Who's there?" She demanded, pinning her ears back threateningly as she pawed the ground. She lifted her nose, sniffing once. Yuck. She would know that stench anywhere. Wolf! She snorted and shook her head. "Get your cowardly butt out here, wolf!" She spat at the shadows, where she thought she could just see the outline of a wolf hunkered down among the bushes.

She had caught sight of him by the noises she had made so he might as well show himself. The dark animal revealed himself, his teeth bared. He narrowed his jade eyes. "Foolish deer!" He barked in his deep voice before checking for outriders. Good, none of them had been brought forward by her cries.
He gave a sloppy grin and started to advance on the female. If she bolted he was at range enough to where he could chase her down.

And of course, she didn't know what he was saying, only saw the wicked gleam in his eyes and the flash of his teeth. She backed a step, bringing her hindquarters under her body for more power, and reached out with a hoof and struck the ground in a savage determination to win. Her gaze was stone cold as she glared down at the wolf. And instead of bolting, as she was sure it expected her to, she stayed her ground and pinned her ears angrily, even taking a step closer, every line in her body radiating fury.
((Ahem... Let's take a moment to pause and to say... "OH EM EFF GEE A WOLF!"
xD))

Brandur was taken back. He had never seen prey strike at him... The wolf put his ears down and gave another strong snarl in an attempt to intimidate her. It was now or never. Ignoring the signs that any other experience wolf would have taken as a warning, Brandur lunged at the female's right shoulder.

Oh, what a stupid thing it was! Of course, Danica had never before encountered a wolf, but foxes normally turned tail and ran when they saw her aggressive stance. Her eyes flashed as the brown wolf lunged at her shoulder. Quick as a whip, she whirled to face him, rearing up on her hind legs and thrashing out with her hooves, both aimed at the creature's head.

The wolf let out a howl of pain as he was thrown backward. Brandur stood back up, stumbling as he did so. He was bleeding from the head just under his ear where he'd been caught . The wolf looked up at the hind with a gaze that spoke louder then any words a speaker would hear: "Respect... I respect you." The animal let out a soft whimper and collapsed to the ground trying to stop his pounding, aching head from exploding.
One more strike... and I'll be dead... His sparse thoughts teased and whispered at him for being so foolish.

It wasn't like the hind to show mercy when it came to any predator threatening herself or her children. Especially her children. But there was something about this wolf that seemed to stop her from whirling and giving it a good kick. She stood above the collapsed wolf and she thought she saw something in his eyes. Respect. Suddenly, Danica felt torn between the need to protect herself and the rest of the deer, and pity for the poor wolf lying on the ground. She could see blood trickling from his wound and already beginning to bathe the grass red. She stepped back slightly, shaking her head.

The wolf once again forced his head up to stare at the hind. He was supposed to be the predator not the wounded prey. This female didn't even have antlers and she had brought him down. His claws dug into the soft earth, this time not in the lust of the hunt, but the struggle of defeat. He would never show his belly to a deer.
Brandur pushed himself off the red grass and shook his head. This resulted in him falling back down but he persevered. He had to leave before she stopped hesitating to bring him down. The wolf whined softly as more pain smashed into his skull so much like the initial impact. He swayed but stayed upright this time, stumbling off for the bushes in a desperate amble.

That would show him to mess with deer. Danica trotted a few steps after the wolf, her legs striking the soft earth like pistons in her anger. How dare that wolf attack her! But now he must have learned his lesson. "And learn it well, wolf," She muttered to herself under her breath, her eyes still blazing with the light of battle as she glared after him into the shadows.
