Danica's teeth skillfully sought out the roots of the grass, gently pulling up the stalks as she grazed near the edges of the meadow. The sun had taken its place high up in the sky, pulsing warmth down to earth as it did every day. The boxing hind looked up and sighed. Where was Artair?
Perhaps it was the growth of the antler nubs and the loss of the baby fur that had changed things, perhaps not. But recently, it had seemed as if she were seeing less and less of the calf. She thought back to her own fawnhood, how she had rather resented all the rules her mother had laid out for her. She had tried so hard not to become like her, that perhaps she had gotten a little slack. She shook her head, lowering her nose to the ground again. So where was he?

Artair had to admit to himself that he was enjoying greater and greater freedom from his mother. He looked back on himself as a little calf, and thought himself so naive, never mind the fact he was still quite young. Now he had antler nubs, and he was going to be Lord of the Herd just like his father, everyone would see, and they would resent mocking him as a calf.
The silly young buck pranced over finally to his mother side, looking over her. He still loved her, of course. How could he not? Deep in his heart, Artair was very much a momma's boy. He was just going through a stage all young deer went through, gaining independence and becoming cocky. But how could he not? I'm so very handsome, he thought to himself, before finally going to his mother. "Greetings mother. How are you? I was off playing by myself." She looked a bit worried, causing a twinge of guilt to surge through Artair, followed by anger. Why did she have to worry? He could take care of himself!

Danica chuckled at the look on the calf's face as he came prancing over, extending her muzzle to nose at him. "You are so very much like your father, Artair." She said with a sigh, thinking back to the self-absorbed look Fell Lore often displayed whenever he thought nobody was looking. She had learned to read Artair as she had learned to read Fell before him, and she knew that anyone with half an eye could tell by a glance that the two were father and son.
"Why, greetings son. I'm doing rather well myself, and you? I was just grazing all alone at the edge of the meadow." Danica teased, taking his words and twisting them to her own use.

Artair nosed his mother back, feeling a flash of love and warmth spread through his body. He was a momma's boy, when it all came down to it, even though he was getting older.
Again, that twinge of guilt flashed through his body at his mother's words. He shouldn't have left her alone like that! What if a fox had come? Who would protect her? He had hornbuds now, and he had a duty to protect his mother because of it. "Did you have fun mother? I am sorry I left you for so long." Poor guilty fellow- he was so obvious!

A soft laugh sounded, and Danica shook her head in amusement. "You forget, Artair, that your mother could probably beat out many a stag in this herd in boxing. I don't suppose too much danger would have the chance to befall me?" She teased. She knew just how proud of his antler nubs Artair was, and really, he had the right to be proud, just as every other calf his age was. She would have been very much worried if he hadn't been elated at the arrival of the nubs, and even more so if he had not adopted an air of superiority as they all had. "Except your father, of course." Danica added after a breath, her eyes softening considerably at the thought of the tall stag.

Artair HAD forgotten that his mother was simply one of the best boxers there was. If a deer could blush, he would have been bright red. As it was, he ducked his head in mild shame, as if trying to hide within himself. "Nothing could hurt you mother!" There was an unshakeable faith in Artair that his mother could do no wrong, and was invincable- a belief common in younger fawns, but ever so rare among those of his age.
"Father is the greatest. He is the best stag in the herd. I hope I can be like him day." The truth was, Artair had no ambitions of becoming Lord of the Herd, but he wanted something else... there had to be something out there for him. To be a noble Outrider, or maybe he would discover he would be a Speaker... or maybe a Storyteller... The possibilites were endless! "How come father does not give you a little brother or sister for me? I should like a new playment." If only Artair knew exactly what he was asking!

Danica smiled, nosing at the calf. "Because Anlach isn't here yet, that's why." She said, giving him only one of many reasons for what he had just asked. In truth, she knew herself that if she were to bear another fawn or calf, the time she spent with her first son would disappear, and the bond that still existed between them would soon break. Artair was still young yet, she knew, and neither of them could be ready for something like a little brother or sister for him just yet. "Besides," She added. "There are other little calves and fawns that you play with, aren't there? You wouldn't have time for a little brother or sister, would you?"
