1. Do not post without Waarufu's permission
2. If you have a comment concerning content or if you've found a spelling/grammar error, feel free to give Waarufu a PM about it. I can hardly edit things myself. XP
3. Banners are made by Waarufu, and the photography in the banners are (C) Waarufu. Yes, I took the picture of the pretty sunset with my dad's digital camera. Do not under any circumstance take them or any portion of them for yourself or someone else or for any reason at all.
4. Disobey these rules and I have full right to release whatever devilish thing I happen to have at the time on you to rip your soul from your body and then turn you into a pile of gooey mush - one strip of flesh at a time. ... You think I'm kidding? I like my photography very much, even if the banner itself is kinda crappy... ^.^;

Called: Diallo
Significance: African for 'bold'
Shortened: Di, 'allo, 'lo
Gender: Male
Birthed: Hyena
Years: Adolescent

Clan: None
Rank: Nomad

Characteristics: His red eyes have darkened since puppyhood, but his silverish coat and black underbelly have remained unchanged. The stripes on his face have become much more pronounced, and there's even some darker ones fading into his ears now. His once-black tail has now grown in some of his silver streaks as well.
Personality: Although his appearance has changed, the largest os changes can be found in his personality. Once an overzealous pup, he has toned down to an almost opposite extreme. Wandering now away from other hyenas, he doesn't talk nearly as much but prefers to be in silence. He can now hunt for himself well enough, and scavange decently well. The odd quirks from his puppyhood of seemingly knowing things from extreme attention hasn't dwindled, but is now harder to pick out because of his overall quiet attitude.
Expectations: Knowing or not, Diallo wants a place where he can fit in, though he doesn't seem to have the ability to settle into a normal clan life because of his deep-rooted distaste for female hierarchy.

Those He's Encountered
Lilah: He doesn't understand what Lilah is, beyond a nomadic hyena like himself, and seems outwardly interested in her strange appearance of bone and shell. He warmed up to her rather quickly due to his own want of companionship, and now follows her around like a, well, puppy.

His Views of Others from His Puppyhood
Raeros: Although he was excited to have known Rae as a puppy, he understands now that the other cub was much less excited about knowing him. He wonders absently if, in his wanderings, he will ever find the nomad again.
Kain: Kain will always be the 'poppa' and 'father' to Diallo, and is truly the hyena that he misses from his brief life in the clan. He hopes that he wasn't too much of a burden on the other, and that his presence didn't get Kain in trouble with his queen.
Zhengya: He knows that Zhengya despised his loving puppy words of calling her mother, and she is perhaps the true reason why he left the clan. He knows he wasn't what she wanted - a lone pup wandering into their territory that caused her mate to want to look after him. But he respects her for allowing him to stay, for allowing him to learn from her, and to stand among her clan and her daughters and her sisters. However, he will never go back to them by choice.

Chumu was a gathering of nomads, those that chose to come together briefly to mate and exchange hunting information, living far west of the Windanas in territory plagued by rogues and without a constant supply of herd animals moving through it. Uchawi, the only female of the area, gave birth to three cubs on the banks of the poisoned river near where it looped through toxic territory. The land around them had always been neglected by nature, untouched by the greens and blues of life. And the prey in the area showed that neglect in their starved faces and protruding ribs. And the nomads showed that same neglect in their scruffy coats and knotted manes and the way in which some of them snarled and acted crazed and had to be run off to join the rogues in tormenting the still-living hyenas. Bringing life into that dead place seemed almost a cruelty in itself.

Two females and one male grew out of infancy and into young pups, finally able to leave the den and explore their new world. Knowing nothing different than the heavy purple water which they were told to never drink and the reek of black sand and the pallid faces of other hyenas, the two females quickly adopted a laid-down personality. If they kept their mouths shut and their heads down, the adults typically ignored them and their mother could keep them pretty well-fed. But quiet was not Diallo.

The young silver and black pup seemed to be everywhere at once; barking at anyone passing through the area, chasing off the other adults with his constant yips begging for attention. It got to the point where Uchawi had to leave her young cubs behind to hunt for food enough for herself and the three growing youngsters. Soon after, the cubs saw less and less of their mother and other adult hyenas, and were receiving fewer and fewer kills from their mother.

It was during one of their mother's 'hunts', while Diallo was romping around on a ragged face of rocks watching the smaller stones as they tumbled off the edge of the miniature cliff and kerplopped into the murky water below, that the sisters decided to do something about their food shortage.

Umba and Kiua trotted up the sloping side of the hill towards their brother, paws displacing the red-and-black mingled sands. With small faces twisted into snarls, they attacked. Caught off-guard, out-numbered and over-sized, Diallo was shoved off the cliff and tumbled into the poisoned water below.

Choking on the thick water, Diallo was lucky to make it to shore before drowning. He shook himself dry, stumbling over his large feet. Faced with a choice of waiting for mother, following his sisters, or heading off on his own, the young cub flopped into the familiar dust he'd known his whole life and waited. Surely mother would come back from her hunt soon. Surely Kiua and Umba would return home after playing.

Diallo waited until his hunger drove him off in search of food. He failed at catching grasshoppers and the small flying insects. He spooked the hares and the birds long before he could get his teeth around him. He tripped up when he tried to chase down a small rodent.

It was half a week after his sisters had disappeared that Diallo found a place in the purple water where the fish washed ashore. They were always bright colors, and the sun played off their scales and had attracted his attention many kilometers away. He hung around the spot, feeding off the dead fish until he'd grown enough experience to no longer trip while hunting for mice.

It had been a long month for him, the fish having upset his stomach the first few weeks he'd eaten them. But the young silver and black cub wasn't giving up - perhaps out of stubborness, or will to survive, or perhaps something as silly as ignorance.

Chumu: Good luck in Swahili
Uchawi: Poison in Swahili
Umba: Sister in Swahili
Kiua: Something that kills in Swahili

Characteristics as a Pup: He is a silver coloration with black pads, underbelly, ears, tail, and muzzle. He has striking red eyes and can most easily be identified by them and the striped markings on his forelegs.
Personality as a Pup: Overanxious and peppy, Diallo is not the brightest crayon even if he was in a box made up of all black crayons except for himself. He tends to bumble through societal constraints and the chain of respect and order - without even noticing until he's reprimanded. On top of that, he seems to have a strange other-sense, a type of reaction to certain situations as if he was on a level similar to or even above those his own age that dwindles out almost as soon as it appears. Perhaps he's just oddly focused, if he wasn't tripping over his own four paws.
Expectations as a Pup: He just wants to find a family

His Views of Others as a Pup
Raeros: The first hyena he'd met since losing his clan, and another cub to boot! Diallo was very happy to have found a playmate, who became his brother when Kain found them. Or at least you couldn't tell Diallo otherwise.
Kain: He's convinced that the older hyena is his new father, and goes to the extreme of calling him poppa. He does respect and listen to Kain, when it seeps into his head.
Zhengya: This queen hyena had been promised by Kain to be the pups' new mother, but she'd frightened poor Diallo when he first met her. He strives to wrench a compliment out of her still, even at the expense of being silly.

Wanderings
Diallo

With age came wisdom, or at least that's what the crows had cackled to him, the buzzards sung in their raspy tones, and every hyena had glared to him with the same unseeing eyes. He'd grown weary of it all, or at least that's what he had believed. Pack life meant staying in one place with the same group for a long period of time. And it wasn't exactly like Zhenga appreciated being called his mother either.

So, he had instead decided to simply leave when he was old enough to understand how to truly take care of himself. He really did appreciate all the trouble that Father Cain had gone to to take care of him, and even the sterner lessons of life and survival from his Not-Mother. But... his presence seemed to stress their own lives too much for him to remain there when he grew a little stronger, a little faster, a little smarter.

Wandering through the wasteland, he scratched at the parched earth with a well-worn paw. It wasn't easy to keep surviving day after day when you were alone. Diallo knew that now; it had been branded in his heart from the day his two sisters had left him, though he was too young to understand it then. And yet, the solitude to some extent gave him freedom. He wasn't burdened by weakening another, or halted by hyena society norms.

In truth, he'd never really be able to fit into a true hyena clan. Not having been raised in one, he did not hold the proper respect for the queen like he should. And it wasn't something he could ever learn easily. Why should he bow before someone, simply because of their gender? Why would he do someone else's bidding when it was so much more efficient to do his own?

Nomadic life suited him, as best as anything would, for now. He could spend his days wandering the landscapes, his early mornings and evenings hunting when it wasn't too hot out and when things were starting to slow down. And then he could spend his nights lounging, listening to the wind and the other animals. That's what he did best now, listen. For someone who ran his mouth nonstop as a pup, listening had almost been a new discovery for him.

But listening paid off. He could listen to the wind and it would tell where the herds were. It could carry the scents of other animals and the sounds of water nearby. And listening brought him advice. He could catch the ends of conversations from the buzzards and find out where the dead lay so that he could feed from it.

Being alone, he spoke very little. There was really no need to vocalize unless he was around other hyenas. Silence was now a comfort. It meant he was safe from others of his kind that would think to try and chase him off or pick on him.

So Diallo continued to wander, sniffing at the hard, cacked ground on occasion for the odd scent in the still wind. Despite his decisions with his head, his heart still called out for something he had never had since his own birth - acceptance, belonging, and even true peace.

Companionship...?
Diallo

It was strange to finally have companionship outside of a clan after all this time. At first, he had felt uneasy running alongside of the strange hyena he had found in the wasteland. But as more time passed, he found it easier and easier to smile and to laugh and to run with her with his tail relaxed. She never expected too much of him; not in conversation or in physical traits. Slowly, he began to think fondly of the older hyena that he ran with. It was hard not to, afterall, with her being the only one he had to look up to and after. He felt he had to look after her as best as he could.

Lilah had been scarred before Diallo had met her, and because of that she seemed to favor one of her legs at times. That's why he did it, stick to that side of her as best as he could. He knew he wasn't strong, knew he wasn't exactly fast, knew he wasn't stunningly intelligent. But he wanted to protect her if he could, in any way, no matter what. It was perhaps that drive that kept him with her better, longer. He found himself pushing his own limits without regard, and not having to stop to rest as often and sprint to catch up while hoping she was alright, she was still there. That.. and Lilah could hunt better than he could.

He was putting on muscle as well as weight, building up his strength and determination. He'd always been bold, on some levels, but he needed something to make him bold on all levels. Something to protect... ah, the male urges.
