((Since my RPs tend to kind of meander off into no-man's land if I don't have a direction, I have chosen this one to be about invading lions! OOoOOOooOO. At least, it is at first. X3 Anyone is welcome to join.))

The scent on the wind was strangely familiar to Lilah, though she had no conscious memory of encountering it before. Perhaps she had only dreamed it during her stay in the dead zones. Strange predators were afoot, and though Lilah generally avoided trouble with competitors, something about the scent of these strangers rose her hackles. Her tail arched stiffly over her back in an unconcious signal of aggression, Lilah followed the trail through the savannahs.

Moses, having spotted the wind-dancer from afar (honestly, it was so easy to spot hyenas these days - their coats were brighter than some worn by his own kind!), circled above her. He had already notified Mosi, who was wandering south of there, to her presense. He wouldn't be far behind. Deciding to speak to the female before he arrived, the old eagle landed a few yards from her. He tilted his head to one side and blinked, calling out in a loud voice.

"Dear femme of mystical canine race,
furred with many a brilliant star,
the expression on thy ebony face
says you percieve that danger is nae far."

((*gigglefit* I like this talking-in-prose thing. Maybe i'll have him talk like that all the time. x3))

Already on edge, Lilah froze solid at the strange eagle's arrival. She could tell that he was the type favored as friends by some hyenas -- she herself kept a tame scorpion to amuse herself -- but she had never heard a bird speak poetry before. For that matter, she had never heard poetry at all.

Bewildered and slightly annoyed at the bird's intrusion, Lilah cocked her head and uttered a single perplexed cry. No eagle had ever spoken to her before.

Blinking again, Moses shrugged, then placed one wing over his chest and bobbed his head politely towards Lilah.

"Forgive my intrusion, dear lady,
but this old fellow, you see,
was simply worried about your state of mind,
though he knows not who you might be."

Then, tucking his wing against his side, he flicked a bit of sand off his tail and continued.

"Moses is the name
I was given at my weaning,
but since it is a two-leg name,
I know not of it's meaning.
Ms. Manners dictates name-giving in turns,
so, if I may, your name I'd learn."

There. Mosi had finally caught Moses' scent again. That bloody bird was more trouble than he was worth - always flying ahead and leaving Mosi stranded, or calling him over somewhere in the middle of his childcare duties... Grumbling, and with his tail at half-mast, the plain-looking hyena made his way towards his feathered friend's smell, not realizing that he was already speaking with the raindancer female.

Kanoni had been running perimeter again when Yahto alerted her to something a bit farther out than her usual range. The news of a strange hyena, as well as a clan male interested her enough to entice her from her usual path. It might very well be a friend of the males, come to join their gradually increasing clan, or it might just be a nomad or, and this thought kept Kanoni wary, it could be a threat. Be it a scout from another clan or, even worse, a rogue.

Kanoni shuddered at the thought. She had crossed paths with an old rogue once long ago, near the beginnings of her wandering, and she lived only because of her swift paws and Yahto's sharp eyes.

She whooped once in greeting when she got close enough to see the two hyena's. Because of her perimeter duty she had approached at a different angle from the Clan hyena and could see both easily. She was unsure of this particular hyena's name, as they both were newly arrived, but it was enough that he was clan that she registered no threat from him.

She slowed as she drew nearer the new female hyena. The stranger had a pelt like she had never seen before, like the night sky, but then, Kanoni was not one to judge others by the colour of their pelts, her own being different enough. Finally, close enough that she could see the other, and the other could see her easily, Kanoni stopped. The other seemed to have a lame leg, which didn't mean she was no threat, but did help to further put Kanoni at ease. She cocked her head questioningly. Words didn't seem necessary just yet.

Words were for when you knew there would be no fight.

Lilah didn't have much patience with ordinary speech, and the eagle's bizarre sing-song way of speaking didn't appeal to her much either. She laid her ears flat to her skull, slightly unnerved. It was difficult for her to follow long sentences, and the eagle's unusual speech patterns confused her. She frowned in concentration and nodded politely at the eagle's supposed concern for her. "Lilah," she said, dipping her muzzle. She might have trouble following the bird, but she would be as polite as required of her.

At the howl of a stranger, Lilah tensed, ready to run. She was still on the trail of an alien enemy, and now it was obvious that she had strayed into a clan's territory. Her nose to the wind, following the unknown enemy, she must have simply passed over the clan marks. She backed away from the newcomer, a flashy-looking blue female, and bowed slightly in acknowledgement.

Kanoni bobbed her head in acknowledgment. She moved forward cautiously and scented the female. A second underlying scent however, caused her to crinkle her nostrils. She sneezed slightly and snuffled at the patch of ground nearest her that contained the offending scent most strongly.

Then she rememebred herself and looked back up at the other sheepishly. "Sorry. I am Kanoni. This scent here... It is unfamiliar to me. You are here on peaceful business yes?"

Having fallen behind of his own will in order to drink a bit more and rest up, the adolescent now comes barreling into the scene, hot on Lilah's scent trail. He slows as he notes the gathering of other hyenas, ears pricked forward. He trots up behind Lilah, nudging her in the leg with his nose gently and looking up at her before peering towards the others. Had it been a mere few days ago, he would have turned tail and run the other direction. But, odd as Lilah looked and little as she talked, she was the family he had now. And he wasn't about to lose her for anything. He was still certainly a puppy at heart.

His nose quivered at the odd scent that Lilah had found and was tracking, tail having the strong urge to slip under his body though he ignored it as best as he could.

"Yes," Lilah said simply, turning to nudge at Diallo. The blue clan female didn't seem too outwardly aggressive, but Lilah had no intention of hanging around to explain herself to the clan's queen. First, she had to track down the owners of the disquieting scent.

"We go," she said, uttering a short cackling yip. She was eager to be off. She would have to be cautious, so as not to put the young Diallo in any danger, but she was confident in her ability to track the invading animals without being caught herself.

Kanoni wasn't quite sure what to think of this strange female, but at least she had expressed peaceful intent. Although anyone could say that. Kanoni was fairly certain she could believe her but at the same time she was... peculiar. She had an adolescent with her though, so she couldn't be that bad, he seemed in decent shape after all. The scent was still a problem, it was definetly made by some sort of predator and it was worryingly near Chumu. What to do then?

"I am glad to hear it. Look, I'll be straight with you. If this scent is made by a threat, I have to find out about it, it's too close to Chumu territory to be ignored. Since you seem set on going, I'll go with you. That way I can be sure you spoke truth and I won't have to involve the Queen. Uchawi can be.. touchy. Until I've explored this properly, I'd rather not bring her half-chased information." Kanoni said frankly. She had decided since this hyena was so hard to read it would be best to just lay all her cards on the table. Plus, if she didn't like it, she could feel free to turn tail and head back out into the wastes. Strangers in Chumu and new predators were Kanoni's business, and business had to be dealt with.

As Mosi approached, he noted the presence of the other hyenas, and yipped in greeting to the only one he knew - the blue female, who was of his own clan. Hmm... It was a bit crowded for his liking.

Tilting his head, Moses listened to Mosi's greeting, then clicked his tongue with pleasure.

"This journey I would go upon,
if only you'd let me tag along.
I'm sure my friend, who approaches now,
would want to also follow somehow."

Oh dear. He had changed his meter. Now he was beginning to confuse himself.

The adolescent had no complaint to Lilah's want of leaving, and gave a dryer, harder-pressed cackle in response to her - he could smell many hyenas on the one blue female and that meant she was undoubtedly part of a clan. A large clan at that. And there was no squire here with the queen's ear that he called poppa. He started moving, darting under Lilah in mid-step to be between her and the other hyenas, right on her injured leg as he always ran.

As the other hyena approached, he cast a glance over his shoulder and breathed in. They smelled too similar, that pair. "Clan mates." He mumbled to Lilah in a quieter tone, a small shiver racing up his back as his fur began to stand on end, red eyes looking up at her worriedly. His tail was ducked under his body now, his mind not in enough places at once to bother controlling that as well.

Kanoni returned her clanmates greeting with one of her own. Now what was his name again? Mossy or something.. She vaguely remembered something like that, for all that his pelt was mainly grey he had interesting glowing eyes which made him stand out.

The adolescent seemed to be getting awfully worked up for no reason in Kanoni's opinion. Mind you he would certainly have reason if it had been Uchawi here, but Kanoni felt no particular need to have these two throats ripped out. Her clanmate, if she recalled correctly also had a fond spot for the young. And in any case, his eagle seemed set on going. Damned weird bird that. Yahto rarely spoke, and when he did he was generally short and to the point.

Eventually Kanoni reached a decision. She didn't feel like dancing about trying to put them at their ease, she didn't think they were a threat and she did want to investigate this scent. Turning to her clanmate she politely sniffed his face in greeting before speaking. "Well, as I've said, this new scent needs be chased, and I've every intention of doing it, if you're set upon it as well, I'd be glad for the company, if not, the Waste's always wait."

Her bit said she scented the ground again before setting off at a slow ground-eating lope. Her path took her right past the two nomads, if they wanted to attack they easily could at that moment, hopefully this would further put them at their ease. Although, she would in truth feel more secure with her clansmate with ehr as well. Even with one of the nomads being half-crippled and the other being an adolescent, Kanoni did not fancy two against one odds.

Teska heard the loud piercing cackle from a distance, and a smell invaded her nostrils that made her shudder. Her muzzle unconciously went to rest along her back where a series of scars played over each other. She snarled lowly and then sniffed the air again to make sure she knew that she was scenting correctly. She was correct, she smelled the bitter smell of Lions. Her hockles raise slightly and her mane bristles as she growls, both in nervousness and the need to injure the lion.

She knew that she didn't stand a chance against the lions by herself, but she knew if she could get some help from any others she may be able to help kill. Although very young, Teska had already been through a lot and has survived what most hyenas would probably never see in their life time. Sighing, and her body pumped to kill, Teska began her march towards where she smelled the other hyenas gathering. She moved at a slow trotting pace that eventually led up into a full trot until she skidded at a stop in front of a familiar looking hyena.

" Kanoni." She breathed softly and looked at the blue jay hyena. Cackling she let out a yip of greeting and then motioned the air as if wondering if she smelled the lions to. Her head tipped to the side and she soon realised that she was not the only hyena that smelled the lions, they all did and while many of them probably didn't know what it was, Teska's back had almost been clawed off by one when she was in the savannah on her own. She knew the scent very well, and it still made her leary to smell it, causing her to be ten times more jumpy than she already was.

She sniffed Kanoni and gave her a look that said ' Are you going to find that scent too?' Sitting back onto her hindquarters, she shook her head back and forth slightly and waited, knowing that Kanoni would know that Teska would follow her. Teska wanted some action, she hadn't seen any in a long time.

"Teska." She raised her head and wagged her tail cheerfully at this new addition, with a clanmate who was near a stranger and two hyenas who truly were strangers, it was nice to have someone you knew was your ally with you.

"Have to chase this scent hey? Report to Uchawi and all that. Definetly a predator, not familiar with them though."
She commented thoughtfully. Resolved though she was, tracking down unknown predators was still serious business, and not to be taken overly lightly. Something about the scent made her fur want rise and her teeth want to bare, but with her usual calm pragmatism, Kanoni remained unruffled.

"Nomads aren't hostile. They try to fight you I kill them anyway." She added after a moment. Not because she really intended on killing anyone, just making sure the nomads knew Kanoni would protect Teska and that Teska knew if she had to fight, she would not fight alone.
