I'm planning to travel to Japan sometime in the next three years (hopefully) and I was wondering if anyone else here has ever been to Japan. I'm in the process of planning the trip right now (where to go, what to see, etc.) and I could use some advice from people who've vacationed in and or lived in Japan before.

Infortunately, I've never been there, though it's my number one stop when I finally get out of school! 3nodding

Sel has been to Japan though! *skips off to find her*

The first time I went, I was staying with a family in Seika-cho. A "rural" town of 30 000 in Kyoto Prefecture. We visited all the old areas around there: Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Uji, etc.

The second time I was living with some friends in an apartment in Sapporo city in Hokkaido prefecture. I also visited Asahikawa, Otoineppu and Otaru. Then I visited the family again in Kyoto, the Mother and I took a trip to Tokyo too, to see the Square Enix store and a Kabuki.

If you go to Japan I would definitely recommend going to Kyoto and Nara. As the old capitals there's SO much history to see, so many temples.

There's Kiyomizudera in Kyoto, a temple that has been standing for over 1000 years. It's built on stilts on a mountainside using only rope and wooden beams. (You see it a lot in anime)

There's also Kinkakuji and Ginkakuji. Kinkakuji is a temple plated in gold, Ginkakuji was going to be plated in silver, but it was never finished.

In Nara, there's Todaiji, a temple housing a 42 foot tall Buddha surrounded by free roaming deer (who are very friendly by the way. ^^ I'll have to scan my pictures...)

And in Osaka there's Himeji:

Sapporo is a lot like Canada, I can upload pictures of my apartment later on.

Uhmmm.. I dunno. Ask me about whatever you want to know. I could talk on and on about Japan. sweatdrop

I'm planning to take a 1-week trip to Japan. If I spend that week in only 2 or 3 cities, (including Tokyo) which cities would you recommend?

^^ You'd need like a whole month for Tokyo.

I would definitely say Kyoto, Nara, and Tokyo. Osaka is awesome too, but it's got that big city vibe, so if you're going to go that route, might as well just save it for Tokyo.

^_^ Yeah, I can tell just from reading about the attractions that there are in Tokyo that a whole trip and a much longer one would barely scratch the surface of all that there is to see there! ^_^

So, Kyoto and Nara, huh? Cool! Thanks for the recommendations. ^_^

By the way, did you go to Ginza while you were in Tokyo?

Unfortunately no, I don't think so anyway, I was only in Tokyo for two days. I was in Shibuya and Shinjuku from what I recall and could read. ^^ I got to see the Imperial Palace though, at least the outside grounds, there's a huge wall surrounding it.

Wow! I want to go to those parts of Tokyo too! Oh! Did you see a kabuki show while you were in Japan? If so, what was it like? Did you enjoy it?

It was fantabulous! Absolutely gorgeous. It's made me a bit of a fan of Kabuki. In fact its worth it just to see the costumes and hear traditional music.

You can even get little ear pieces to get an English explanation of what's going on.

This is the theatre we went to in Tokyo. The building was huge and I couldn't get a better shot. sweatdrop

You should see the gate to Nijo, the old Imperial Palace in Kyoto.

>.> I should have a picture of that somewhere... Damn, I don't think I have it scanned yet. I'll locate that.
