[follows unclipped wings]

Prismatine usually figured that if he was teaming up with other agents, it would probably be one of the other boys from the band. Chrysoberyl, especially, since he was the newest member, but any time spent with Sylvanite was....

Prismatine did not want to think too much about that or he'd get all blushy and distracted, and that would be real embarrassing for everyone involved.

Anyway, none of his bandmates were with him; instead, he was walking with the Captain who'd saved him from that stupid ******** bird from outer space that thought he was an easy target. It was nice to have someone with him, especially someone stronger, because Prismatine's experience had primarily been getting smacked around by all kinds of nasty creatures.

"So have you dealt with the aliens a lot, then?" Prismatine couldn't help but be curious, really. Who wouldn't be, about beings from another world?

Vesuvianite hummed a bit at the question. "Yeah. You could say that. I've made a pretty shitty habit of running into a lot of them," they said wryly. "Lot of them smell Chaos and just... lose their minds. A few times, I've been able to convince them to talk. Or read the intel people have put into the database. All their stories corroborate: something happened a thousand years ago, they either stay awake or go into some stasis for the next thousand years, and they wake up on a planet where Chaos is everywhere, everyone and everything is dead, and they get some kind of chance to somehow teleport here to Earth, where we're still alive—thriving, even, despite climate change and all of that—and.... Well, it all ends there, as far as intelligence gathering goes. They try to stay alive."

They sighed, rubbing their face. "I still don't think Chaos is why their planets are dying, because Earth being the only one unaffected doesn't make any sense—look at us, after all. We're here trying to fix s**t. Nuclear fallout, crazy climate change s**t, whatever, my theory is some s**t like that happened and the only thing that keeps, uh... living, other than them, is Chaos. Like the cockroach in Wall-E or something. Not to say we're cockroaches, either... ugh, not the best metaphor, but please tell me you get what I'm getting at," they finished with a half-laugh.

Prismatine nodded, thoughtfully. "I might make my habit staying out of their way," he said. Not that he could promise that sort of thing, given the circumstances, and given that it sounded like those aliens liked to go on the attack first, but he could try. "You know, as much as possible."

He exhaled between his teeth.

"I mean, sucks that they've got nowhere else to go, but we're not the ones that ruined their worlds." Even if they served the same force, or whatever. All of that s**t was a little beyond what Prismatine personally was willing to care about. "But no, I hear what you're saying. Probably they're too blinded by their own assumptions to consider any alternatives."

"I wish you luck with that plan," Vesuvianite said dryly. They'd had the same plan, once. Didn't really work out, but hey. They could hope.

"Exactly," they nodded, pleased with Prismatine. "That, and trauma just... does really ******** up things to the brain. Like, none of them seem... like some hyper-intelligent, Star Trek slash Doctor Who alien race that's above s**t like PTSD or whatever."

They shrugged. "I certainly can't imagine what it would be like being awake and alone for a thousand years. Frankly, I'm surprised any of them are as sane as they are. It doesn't give them any right to attack us, I just... I guess I'm more forgiving. My day job is a groundskeeper at a graveyard—which is the funniest way to put it, because I'm actually working the, uh, graveyard shift—"

They snickered at their own joke. "So I see grief in a lot of different ways. Especially at night when people think there's nobody to see them. I just wish it was easier to get some of them to understand we're not.... whatever ******** things up for them. That we don't have to fight. Right now, if Earth is the only place anyone can live, isn't it better if we all got along?" They sighed. "But not a lot of people share that view anyway. Sorry for uh, rambling. I don't... really talk to anyone that often. My 'day job' and this one kind of leave me without a lot of time to socialize."

Honestly, it made a lot of sense. The idea of being left alone to fester on a dying world, trapped there for so long that time started to blur, losing everyone you cared about...the last thing alone, Prismatine was pretty sure, would break him, never mind the rest of it.

"That...yeah, it sounds pretty awful," he acknowledged. "So maybe no wonder they're touchy. Still sucks, though." And if there really was only one fully habitable world in the universe, then maybe everybody needed to get cool about energy draining and just deal. Honestly.

"I'm much more of a resent and remember type of person," Prismatine admitted, bringing his nails up to check them like they weren't perfectly manicured, "but I guess I can try to give a little grace. Do you think we could bring any of them over? Like, show them the truth and make them realize Chaos isn't what they think it is?" Presuming Vesuvianite was right, but Prismatine was pretty willing to accept that assumption.

"Also, that sounds like a really interesting job. I....am in a band." Maybe that was understating it. But honestly, anything more would have felt like bragging. "I don't think I could do what you do. Not that I'm, like, superstitious? But how does it not get creepy in the middle of the night? Or is it just, like, quiet and peaceful and you're out there mowing the lawn no problem?"

"We can only do our best to try and recruit them to the cause, or at least get them to leave us alone," Vesuvianite said.

"A band's pretty cool. As for my job..." They hummed. "It's quiet, peaceful, and creepy. I mean, s**t, dude, sometimes walking the streets like this you gotta worry about freaky chickens that smell like s**t and can teleport. Or gigantic frogs that want to drown you. Destiny City is a weird place to live. But you learn to understand if a sound came from a squirrel or from something you need to look out for. Or if a shadow is just someone from day shift leaving a goddamn shovel where they shouldn't, or a rabbit moving carefully because it thinks there's a predator nearby, or if that shadow is a youma you'll need to chase off. Mostly, though, I get through a lot of books and it's nice making things good for people missing their family members."

Prismatine grinned. "Yeah, I guess that does sound pretty nice. Got any really interesting stories?"

He could probably listen to Vesuvianite talk all night, really. This wasn't the kind of gossip he usually collected, but it could still be fun.

Honestly, the Negaverse was great for this kind of thing.
