Okay so what are people's plans on improving their work to get it to where they want it to be?
I'm planning to do some face studies since I want to try and get my style more realistic. I know I need to work on portraying different facial features/structures so hopefully this will turn out good. Heck, if I can draw someone and have someone else recognise what ethnicity they are, that would be fantastic XD
I'll try and start this tomorrow and will post it in the Draw-A-Day thread over in activities.

I've hit a point where I'm not sure what to do to improve other than to keep practicing. It feels a little bit like art block and I don't like it lol
But, you should take a look at Concept Cookie What makes me suggest that site is the weekly exercises--a few weeks ago the exercise was to draw famous people. Doing so helps realize what parts of the face makes someone recognizable.

Oh wow, I've never come across this site before - how is this!? I'm going to add the link over to the Draw-a-Day activities thread as well. Definitely lots of interesting exercises there, thank you very much for providing the link! From your intro you're trying to improve on more interesting poses since you mainly focused on portraits and busts, right? What sort of practice are you doing to work on it? Observational and gesture drawings?

...To be honest, I've been feeling really uninspired and in a funk lately, so right now I'm not doing much to break out of the portrait stuff, since I feel most inspired to paint when I've got a character I want to get onto "paper".

Oh that sucks >_< Do you draw for yourself? Or are the portraits you do for other people? I ask because I never have any inspiration to draw for myself, if that makes sense. I feel bad for saying that - I'm an artist with no inspiration >_< I have characters and such in my head from when I RP but at the same time I never get the overwhelming urge to draw them. I always seem to prefer other people giving me their ideas and I draw that out for them instead and find it more to my liking. I suppose drawing for others is liking getting a brief from a client - it gives you a clear goal and aim to work towards rather than endlessly starting and stopping various images because they don't have any real aim.

I'm the opposite! Sort of. The art that I spend the most time on is of my own characters, and I lack motivation to do other things (unless they're speed paints). But with commissions, the pay is motivation enough to keep me from never finishing a piece.
Eventually, I want to have the skill and know-how to do art like this or this or this. I really love dynamic perspectives and movement in a piece, but every time I try to think of a concept and try to portray it, I fall short and I'm not quite sure what I should focus on first. I hope I'm making sense lol I think my own brain is working against me here.

You're making sense, don't worry! And those are some mighty fine images to have as your goal! Theyall seem to have a sort of 'story' to them, there's a scene happening and it's like someone's decided to pause it at that particular moment or taken a photo. If they are your characters you draw the most, then I'm assuming you've come up with stories for them etc. Have you had tried drawing out a particular scene that you felt strongly towards? Or even just an everyday pose/gesture like them getting ready in the morning but then playing around with the point of view or 'turning' them around and drawing the same pose from a different angles? I'm hoping others will jump in with their own offerings of wisdom to help you out too now that we've got a conversation rolling XD

I do have a few different scenes I want to draw, but it's difficult for me to figure out which angle to portray it from. I don't even know if it's lack of imagination or technical know-how.
What I might try doing is studies of other artists pieces that have dynamic perspectives and what not. I know that using other's art as a reference/study is bad juju for more than one reason but I think it might help me learn. Think it's worth a shot or should I not even go there because of the bad juju?
Also! Would you be willing to do a collab with me? I've never done a back-and-forth collab before, so I'm not sure how it works, but I think it'd be fun ^_^
That would be awesome if other's joined in! Though I don't want to turn this into a 'help Indigo' conversation lol

If your unsure of angle - play around and draw it from different kinds and see what sorts of moods they give. Here are some angle tips from GrizandNorm on Tumblr and why they are used for certain shots - it might help you figure out which would be best to portray those scenes. X and X. Personally I don't see the harm in doing studies of others work. People do it when they look back and replicate work by the Old Masters, don't they? But I think everyone has a different opinion on this so best to do what you feel comfortable with. I think they key thing when doing studies is to make sure you have everything referenced properly - don't claim it as your original idea but link back to the artist that did it and say that you made a study of it for practice purposes. I've never even heard of a back-and-forth collab so we'll both muddle along in it I suppose XD Sure thing. We can make a thread in the Activities sub-forum and post it up there. Haha - you're the first one to bring forward what you want to work on which is why it's an Indigo Help Thread at the moment. I hope others will jump in and chat as well and say hi and things. C'mon people! There are more members now, I see you all! O.O

C'mon people! There are more members now, I see you all! O.O OMGad o-o! Those two guides were awesome! It's easy to find tutorials on value, color, and anatomy, but I don't see many for this sort of thing. Which reminds me! I was going to create a thread in the art discussion forum a few years ago but never had time to do anything with it so it's still in the test forums. I've got a collection of tutorial and resources that might help people here. Go ahead and take a look if you want: *Click*
I hear ya there. I try to get permission from artists whose art I study if I can. I try to be religious about giving credit if I can, too.
I've started a thread for our collab here. XD I really should have put some more thought into the concept because now I'm like "...so...now what?"
Hehe we could quote 'em. Quote 'em all! Bwahaha!

Hmm I can't remember the exact name for it but when I was doing media studies we'd disect movies and things like that to determine why they used certain camera angles etc and lighting choices. So perhaps camera angle tutorials would help you? Haha... so tempted to do a giant multi-quote of everyone who has joined. 16 members but only us two are chatting here! I'm so busy with art shop stuff that I haven't had time to look through that link properly - but it was very extensive what you had going there!

intending to work on poses, expressions, and hands atm (& minor animation???). pretty vague, but yeah~ been busy with a summer class + friends in townfyi, doing some quick thumbnails will help a ton for the larger-scale pieces if you haven't been doing them already. it's good to have at least a few to choose from before actually starting
and with collabs you guys can have one person do lines & the other colors, that's the most common I think...sending back and forth can work too but could get complicated

I've just realised I really need to work on poses to - I get caught up in this mentality that when people ask me for a full body character I need to draw them standing straight so you can see as much of the outfit as possible. Tends to limit what I can do with them crying I need to stop thinking like this and be more creative and original with my stances!

you could always keep that as an option in your shop, sometimes that crosses my mind too...especially when you only get frontal references for clothes u .u it's probably better for you as an artist to experiment with it though
