The event known as "Oblivion" occurred 142 years ago, in 2041. This event was a direct result of the discovery of magic 25 years before, in 2016. No one knows exactly what happened, scientists and historians alike have given up at this point, but a burst of auroras surrounded the entire planet. Not in the usual colors either, these were in every shade imaginable by the human imagination. When this occurred, people began to develop strange powers, Magic. Of course the government needed to keep an eye on these abilities as many of them proved to be dangerous or disruptive to society. But . . . these individuals had technically done nothing wrong, so all they could do was send people to watch over them constantly. After 25 years of more mages being discovered and people being watched, mages had had enough. It started out as a small group, but grew to number in the hundreds. Mages began to uprise, using their powers against their respective governments across the world. The nations had no choice but to unite and declare full-scale war. Mages not fighting were put into camps, to be watched under 24-hour surveillance with armed guards. The mages were strong . . . but they were severely outnumbered . . . and all hope was lost once the united governments resorted to their last weapon. Roughly 1/5 of the planet became unlivable, as it was decimated by nuclear weapons, and the remaining mages, only numbering in the dozens, surrendered.
After the 14-year long war (ending in 2055), the governments of the world decided to keep their alliance, unifying under the common goal of protecting society from the mages. They altered the world order, and after several decades, developed into the society that lasts to this day.
Our blessing, Our curse
Is magic a blessing . . . or is it a curse . . . you decide.
