In the world today, there are those born with the gift of magic, but is it truly a gift? Those born without magic fear and revile those who do. In addition, the government keeps a close eye on "Mages", as they are called, and will bring them into custody at the first sign of rebellion. Thus, those born with magic are instantly separated from a normal life. However, those born with magic are fated with one more curse . . . in a literal sense. For whenever a mage uses the power they were born with, a rebound occurs. It is different for every mage, and the severity depends on the strength of their power. Well-documented cases speak of a man who could manipulate fire freely at the expense of the water in his own body, a telepath who lost his memory by reading others, a man who could take on monstrous forms . . . but lost his humanity in the process. Each mage must balance this curse with their power, or be consumed by it. The populace is mostly ignorant of this, and the government chooses to ignore it.
Mages must choose: Blend in with society, or rage against it. There is no easy choice, nor is either one necessarily right or wrong. What will you choose? Do you fight against the oppression? Or is it a necessary evil with the power given to others? Or . . . are you one who pushes forward the oppression? Make your choice.
