Hi, I'm new to Bento. I love the design and ideas behind them. They're very inspiring. I have a few questions as far as waste goes...
1. How do you use the majority of foods without wasting too much? I don't mean by eating the left overs... As if you're using cutouts for sandwiches/meats/cheeses ect.
2. Any tips to use the majority of all of your food/leftovers?
I have two books that have inspired me (Cute Yummy Time and the Manga Cookbook.) Any other suggestions, Pictures would be great!!

As far as food scraps I eat them sweatdrop . You see I typicly make them either at night or in the morning, so what little 'waste' there is gets eaten by myself or my Oneechan. And book wise I have two: The Just Bento Cookbook (I haven't had the chance to use this one yet crying but all of the recipies sound delicious!), and Japanese Meals on the Go: Bento Boxes (I love this one soooo much heart ).

QQ 1) That can be a toughie, especially with some of the cutter designs. I would either try to incorporate the scraps into another meal or snack (ie; lots of bread scraps left over from sandwich cutters could be turned into a quick bread pudding, or maybe croutons, etc) or do as Yuki said and eat them! Or offer them to someone who'd be interested 3nodding It completely depends on your own innovation and style... but ideally, when you're using the cutters try to cut them as close as humanly possible to your last shape so you can minimize waste sweatdrop QQ 2) Oops, see above hahaha As for recommended book, check out this thread! Hope that helps biggrin

It's rare to have leftovers in my house. Mostly it will go to the dog, or there's leftover veggies. Which isn't all bad because my dad doesn't understand nutrition, and sometimes you shouldn't eat too much of what he cooks. I try to be resourceful, but I can only eat leftovers that have been kept for a day, doctors orders. I have too much to loose. The freezer is my friend. biggrin
Thanks I'll check it out.

Catherine I like the new banner too. Thanks! I was trying to rotate them once a month, but I only have 3 and I'm still getting on my feet with my new place and new job, so my free time is much more sporadic than when I started the guild sweatdrop

When I had time to cook and spend time making it presentable I was over the moon with joy. I think it only happened at Thanksgiving last semester. sad

bit late, but i figured i'd post.
most of what i make for my bentos doesn't leave too much scrap, especially since i don't have any cutters yet. ^^; if i did have some waste, i'd likely eat it, since i don't use things for my bento that i don't eat (i'm not a fan of lunchmeat, personally). other than that, either my mum or sister would likely eat the scraps, and in the event that no one was around to munch it down, we have a mulch bucket, so provided it's not something like meat or something greasy, i can toss it in there, so either the animals outside will eat it or it'll compost into dirt for plants. ^^
