It was the time of the Reformation, as humans called it. Those who were not human called it the Great Discovery, for that was when their presence was established. Between 1480 and 1750AD humans turned from being the hunted to the hunter. They turned on the mythological beings they had forever worshipped and feared and drove them deep into their hiding places in the forests, mountains and oceans. Tens of thousands of innocent humans were slaughtered and even more mythological beings. No “unnatural” creature was spared. It was genocide.
Only those who could pass as human were able to trick humans into assimilating. Only they could move freely across the lands. The others had to seek refuge in what humans called uninhabitable, such as the Ural Mountains in Russia. There, their numbers dwindled but they managed to survive.
It has been roughly 270 years since the end of the Great Discovery and the collective memory of humans is short. The presence of the banished creatures is no longer believed. Humans have forgotten to fear these creatures.
At the base of the Ural Mountains there is a mining city called Inta. The world takes no notice of Inta. It is so isolated that the closest neighbouring city is two days away. Here, the beings that were once chased to the brink of extinction have made their playpen. People are afraid to go into the national forest and the locals pray every night in whispered voices. Nobody goes out at night unarmed or alone. The people of Verkh, a small village near Inta, don't even do that! Those who have friends in Inta often stay the night in town.
Some of the people, the braver, stupider and more adventurous, have set up cameras wherever they hope to catch a creature out. They walk around at night with camera in hand and speak about what's happening. There are dosens of such clip across youtube but the media and the world have yet to catch on and little government interest so far. There is only a small garrison of professionals have been set up in a safehouse in Inta. Perhaps they will do better at investigating the disappearences, haunts and attacks the townspeople speak of.
It was only last week when a troupe of gypsies made their home in the field amongst the city's streets. Their tents were huddled together and a bonfire was lit through the night. They were not the only ones in the camp either. With them they brought wild stories and the last dozen survivors from Verkh, which had been wiped out by horrors no person could imagine. The gypsies told their stories with wide eyes, and the survivors walked amongst them with even wider ones. The survivors knew. They’d seen what happened but would not speak of the horrific scenes they had witnessed.

The year is 2020AD, and we mythical beings of Die Synode von Mitternacht (the Council of Midnight) are chafing at the constraints of our hiding places. The Ural mountains is no place for those who once ruled the lands across the Old World. We build our farms beneath the cover of forests and our cities within the bones of the mountains. We move through the night looking for prey in such a way that does not get us noticed. This is not how we were supposed to live. We were not created to hide from those lesser beings: the humans.
Alas, humans have grown too large and too strong for us to take the world back from them. They are like ants: everywhere. Instead, we wait. We still have much longer for our numbers to build up. Time, at least, is one thing on our side. Our lives are long where their's are short and we have the longer memories. We will remember every injustice they acted upon us and we will have our vengeance... one day.
One day we will have our due desserts.
For now, we must wait and hold the younger, less wise of us in check. They wish to bring the Old world upon the world now. They go about calling themselves the Unseelie. They claw at the edges of society, taking out their natural aggressions with wisdom unheeded. They let themselves be caught on cameras, trick humans and drive them from their villages. They want to instill fear upon the humans but did not feel what it was like to be slaughtered like mere animals. Many of them do not even know what the Unseelie Court was. It is up to us, the elders, to clean up the messes and stop the humans from catching us and bringing upon us a second Great Discovery.
Not all of use must remain in hiding though. The lucky ones who can appear human often choose to assimilate into human culture. They are able to walk freely throughout the world and study these modern people. They have made their way into every walk of human life. They go to universities, they take up human jobs and they give us information. Most importantly, they give us human technology.
Much of our human-made technology is hand-me-downs from humans. We get second hand computers, less powerful guns and anything the humans would not take any notice of. They would notice if one of our spies took a collection of military grade guns so we make do with what we can. Much of it has to go through quarantine before we can even get it to our city. Many of us cannot be near iron so these weapons and artifacts can only be kept in certain areas. Such places are designed within the bowls of our great city, which surpasses all that humans have achieved in their history.
Our city is built and maintained by the elementals: gnomes, undines, slyphs and salamanders. Those who choose to stay hidden within our city are given riches of their choice in exchange for their help. The gnomes create and repair the grand architectural halls and houses fit for the gods that we are. The undines, with their watery prowess, carve away at the sides of our waterways and pump fresh springwater through underground rivers for our replenishment. The slyphs of air scout through the daytime air to make sure no human trickery goes unnoticed. They move through our halls and bring with them fresh air for those who need it. Without them, many of our breathers would perish. Last come the salamanders, they incinerate everything we need destroyed, whether it be garbage, human tricks and anything that satellites could pick up as fey.
One of the greatest problems our kind met, when we were forced underground by the "lessers", was getting resources for our inventors, crafters, and other artisans. It could take a decade for a craftsman to get a good supple of rare materials. Aside from the gnomes, most of our peoples creative tendencies were shafted because of the humans. However, that is soon becoming a problem of our past. In the last fifteen to twenty years, when are kind was finally able to get access to computers and such, many of our young were spurred into learning about something that provided anonymity as well as access to the human world. Something that allowed others to study their habits, as well as see how arrogant the humans had become. Much to our surprise, a young Goblin became enthralled by what the humans called the "internet," the little fellow never left the place and when the Goblin's caretakers tried to pry the child off, it'd throw trantrum shouting about; "how they are hindering progress," or something along those lines.
Alas the little Goblin child was right, though it'd take five years for it to perfect what it was working. The child kept everyone in the dark, but when the Goblin demanded an audience with us, we decided to see what the tantrums were about...since such actions are unacceptable in the community. What the little Goblin showed us, came to be our newest asset. It's hard to explain to a lot of the older creatures, and only most of the young that are "glued" to a computer could really understand the technical details, but the young Goblin...essentially created it's own version of the internet. While not initially as advanced as the human equivalent, it has certainly grown in the last ten to fifteen years. Despite the rather nebulous gift the Goblin created for our people, a specific sever has became the most frequented. A site dedicated to getting resources, that were incredibly hard to go several decades.
Need a rare type of gem or mineral, that can be easily found in the human world? Post a request about it on Scamper, list what you'll give in thanks or trade for acquiring it, and a humanoid creature might just be intrigued enough to fulfill the request. Of course, such a boon does not come without responsibilities. If someone wants access to it, they'll either have to go to a communal area within the city and patiently wait for their turn...Or, if they're humanoid and would like to try their hand at couriering, then they'll have to prove their loyalty, wait for a year or two to be processed, before they are allowed access to Scamp. This is done out of two reasons. One; such a thing could reveal our entire existence to humans if a humanoid left the browser up. Two; it's also made to keep the community strong and re-enforce reliance upon each other. A majority of our kind, tend to have isolationist habits...which might've been fine before the Great Discovery, such beliefs are more hazardous to us now. Especially considering the Unseelie's recent activity at Verkh, which has moved us into making the monitoring of Scamp even tighter.

(Aka, required arseholery) ✦Obey Gaia's ToS and the guild rules. ✦If you don't like something, tell Azekal Noxcis and mdu_ntr and they'll fix it. ✦If you don't follow the rules you'll be removed. ✦Absolutely no flaming or bullying. Na ah, not even a little bit. ✦Don't create more characters than you can handle. ✦If you have to leave of any reason, post it on the OOC.
✦Read the Story and Setting posts before creating your character. ✦Do not change the profile code. It's there for a reason. ✦You may use any style of image you wish (anime, photo, drawing, digital, whatever). ✦Characters must remain close to their mythological counterpart. Flexibility is okay. ✦Only characters that can pass as humans can have assimilated into human society. ✦You know what, I don't really mind Mary-Sues but don't go over the top. Other people have to put up with your character too. ✦PM your finished profile and reservation to Azekal Noxcis or mdu_ntr. When it is accepted you may post it to the Profile Thread. ✦No drastic changes. ✦Post what you have changed on the OOC. ✦By PMing Azekal Noxcis or mdu_ntr your profile, you acknowledge that you will follow the rules of the thread.
✦Swearing is allowed so long as it's in character and within the Gaia ToS. ✦No cybering. Romance is cool so long as it doesn't choke the thread to death. If you must include something, timeskip or fade to grey. ✦No godmoding, autohitting, autoblocking or puppeteering. Your character is not invincible; neither is anyone else's. ✦It's up to your creative genious how fancy your post styles get but don't stretch the page. ✦Please post at least twice a week. ✦Don't leave people in post lock.
✦This is a literate thread. Make sure your sentences and paragraphs are legible. I won't grill you but please make an effort. The same goes for length. ✦Try to write at least two, well structured paragraphs. ✦Absolutely no one liners.

They're things a person can be proud of or do well.
Weaknesses are the opposite to strengths. They're things the character fails at or is a hinderance - stammers, physically weak, runs slow, cannot control their powers, cannot swim, no aim or archery skills, short attention span, nervousness, clumsiness, cannot use weapons, susceptible to magic. Having weaknesses means there are things a character still has to learn and develop. It means they won't automatically win every fight they come across.
I prefer to think of strengths and weaknesses in the context of battle skills. Having a character with battle weaknesses says they can be beaten; they are not a god character.

I've got the money! I've got the place! You've got the figure! You've got the face!Elina----------------------------------◄ Tok sighed to her self as she walked along the street to Unter der Erde, the club that she normally worked at. She hadn't expected to be so early at her the club but looking at her phone she was surprised to see that it was dusk, just an hour earlier then her normal time. However, the Doll Maker could've sworn that it was much earlier when she left, though as she looked around at the darkening street, the old street lamps were beginning to flicker on. ...Well that's a definite sign that it's dusk. Hmm I wonder if it’ll snow later tonight... While the question was pretty moronic considering the time of year and location, the city of Inta hadn’t had snow for the past week, despite snow from the last snowfall still being present. While most humans tended to worry about such things, it only came up in Elina’s mind since she had recently discovered her... let’s say resistance to it. It definitely surprised her when it became apparent.
Curiously her discovery of said resistance was just several hours in the past, when one of her sisters dropped by for an unexpected visit. That was just what she needed, especially under the circumstance in which her sister surprised her. Playing the part of a human that figured out Elina’s secret, almost got Marna killed. Of course, once curses and anger passed Tok took her sister out to dinner to celebrate the surprise. That had eaten a good deal of their time up, but it did allow them to catch up. On the good ol’ times, like the weird situations they got in during their first century…a smile came to her lips as the memory played in her head while she wrapped several delicate fingers around the steel handle that was part of the club’s top entrance.
She had offered to take Marna to Unter der Erde but her elven sister turned her down, something about meeting up with a Gänger that she knows. This caused Tok to just shake her head since, knowing her sister, it was probably for pleasure, though the amusement of the situation was shifted into a desire to dance as the sound of a techno song…The Return, floated to her ears. Ah this was what she loved about Unter der Erde. The different types of techno that she encountered on a daily basis, despite the hindrance of having to wear her hair down, were a wonderful job perk.
Well that and the fact that the club was a Council business, which meant she had a greater chance at running into some of her own kind, she couldn’t’ve asked for a better job while she stay in Inta for a decade or five. As Tok came onto the upper balcony, which led down onto the main dance floor, the elf was met by rather dim lights. It was this curtain of semi-darkness that attracted the Council to the idea of owning such a club. Alas she couldn’t stop for a drink or to chat up the lovely elven bartender, oh no! She had to prepare for her shift and the daily attempt at flirtation from the rather nerdy Dj that was currently on. The guy was definitely sweet, especially for such a nerd, but he was just too much of a wall-flower for her to like. Plus the fact that he was human. Walking back into the employee lounge, Elina fell onto a couch and closed her eyes. ”Eh, I’ve got an hour…A nap sounds just right.”
Alas she wouldn’t get that nap, since laughing could be heard through the walls. That was a sure sign, Chris was there. The nerd that always tried to flirt with her…poor guy, had a thing for repetitive music. Then again, she did too when she initially started working as a DJ but she over came that and learned not to stick personal preference into her job. Seemed like the human nerd still had to learn that, but he had time. Though she couldn’t help but wonder why she chose to try and flirt with her. There were many human females in the club that would gladly get with him. Hell he probably saw more skin in a week then most nerds did in a year since Unter der Erde promoted exhibitionism. However trying to figure out why such a human would continue a worthless cause, soon tired her out and she drifted off into a rather light sleep on the couch.► ----------------------------------TokA sin for him, desire within. It was sunset and Tik was curdling the milk of one of the humans of Inta. His target was a psychologist at the nearby hospital. The human was a sensitive girl who had a somewhat nervous disposition. Every little thing he did upset her, and even some of the things he didn't recall doing. One night he'd watched her freak out about her keys being moved before she'd realised she'd dropped them. To Tik, this was even funnier than what he was doing because it meant he'd freaked her out enough to notice every little thing. The only things he hadn't done to her was the Alpdruck and Alptraum.
The Alptdruck and Alptraum, along with shapeshifting, were two things he didn't do unless the person was a particular interest to him. This psych was only a bit of fun on the side. He didn't want to go in too deep because she was too easy a target. There was no challenge to her. She'd break too fast. Heavens, she'd already put up crucifixes in her bedroom and salt along the windowsills.
What he really wanted from her was her patients. Psychos were so much fun to torment; you could never predict what they'd do. There was one in particular that caught his eye. A man who claimed to have the power to speak to the dead. He couldn't do it but it meant Tik could wisper anything in the man's ear and not have Die Synode von Mitternacht on his back. Some of the elders there were sticklers for remaining in hiding. It was one of the many reasons he'd decided to join the Unseelie Court.
To Tik, the Unseelie Court meant freedom: freedom to be what he was born to be. Being part of the Unseelie's plans meant no hiding, no being forgotten and no rules about who he could and couldn't haunt. Unfortunately, teamwork wasn't in his nature so he didn't go on their group hauntings. The only time he'd gone out with them was for the attack on Verkh. They'd needed all hands on deck for that one and they'd had to use everything at their disposal to terrorise the humans. Most of them died but that wasn't anything to be worried about. Humans died all the time.
Tik finished curdling the unopened bottle of milk and stole away with a bottle of coffee syrup. It was the same sweet stuff he'd stolen from her many times before. This time it wasn't for him though. He was off to see Tok.
Tik snuck around the outside of the club. He'd just realised he couldn't drag the bottle around as a mouse. Normally when he didn't want to be seen he could go as mist but it created one problem: he couldn't carry anything. He'd have to creep around the walls and shadows without being seen.
When Tik made it into Tok's room, he placed the bottle on the ground next to where she lay sleeping. After checking that she was really asleep he crawled onto her body, just below her breasts, and grinned as only he knew how. He poked her face and slowly applied the Alpdruck. It wasn't enough to hurt her (she was a daughter of the Erlking afterall) but it would surely wake her up. If it didn't he'd just have to go heavier.

I've got the money! I've got the place! You've got the figure! You've got the face! Elina ---------------------------------- ◄Elina was having quite the odd dream as she slept away the free hour she had. It was more than just a strange dream, she had those before and they were usually ones she could remember! However it was more then just that. You see she was dreaming of being a rat...or quite possibly a mouse, that was running up a clock. Which might've been normal for that little blighter Tik but alas, it wasn't so for Tok. Once safely upon the shelf that was underneath the clock's face, Elina looked around the room in awe. It was so familiar to her. The stone walls, the tapestries, carpets, most of the room seemed to call out to her...yet something was off. She couldn't quite place it, but as she turned around and looked at her reflection in the clock face's brass, it started to reveal itself.
Tick...Tick...Tick...Tick...Tick
Now that wasn't right. What type of clock never emits a tock? As she pondered the question in her mousey form, her physical body began moving unconsciously...perhaps in response to a certain alp's trickery. It was subtle movement that led into more complex ones, like her body moving her right arm up to Tikus' left ear where she began to scratch behind it as if he was a cat. While he might've enjoyed it, the fact that her hand was feeling something altered the dream scape she was in. During her body's unconscious movement, the elven mouse ran down the side of the clock and came to a stop in front of the towering object. Her mind was still working on why a clock only ticked, and never tocked when the clock struck one.
MROW~
Tok had been so wrapped up in figuring out why a device never tocked, only ticked, that she had turned her back on the big grandfather clock. Yet when the metallic yowl reached her little ears, she spun around in fright to see that the device no longer told time...but foretold death instead, for the majestic grandfather clock had somehow morphed into a cat-like construct made of the device's parts. A construct that was looking rather menacingly at the elven mouse. Such a thing would frighten most anyone, yet her fear manifested in an entirely different manner...one that wasn't visible in her dreamscape.
Her scratching motion, that she was doing to Tik, suddenly became rougher as her hand suddenly grabbed the left side of Nachtsbane's head and forceful slammed it against the back of the couch. While that might've disorientated the little fellow it didn't dislodge him from her torso...which would require a more drastic measure, and drastic measures he would receive! Which took the form of her digging her nails into his scalp before throwing him off of her, and across the room into a wall as she sat up, half awake, and shouted, "YOU SHALL NOT KILL ME CAT!"
Boy was she in for a surprise when she fully woke up, and saw the coffee syrup on the ground near a mildly battered alp. "...Tik what are you doing slumped up against the wall like that? You didn't spill any of that coffee syrup did you?!"► ---------------------------------- Tok A sin for him, desire within.

When she was sleeping, Tok knew his scratchy spot better than any other creature who had ever lived. She was even better than Herta, who didn't like getting Alp-wax on her fingers. Herta would pull a face when he'd try to get her to do it but Tok... she hadn't realised it yet. Oh, the wonders of her sleep scratching. If only he could get away before...
'Sheisse!'
Despite knowing that the strike would come, Tik still acted like it was something new to be smacked against the wall. He groaned as his child-like body rebounded forward slightly and landed on hands and knees. If Tok were to notice him in that position, he'd have turned pink with embarrassment. Tikus Nachtsbane would kneel to nobody.
The wall just just as hard as it was last time and Tok had just as much elf-strength as she did last time too. It was lucky Tik was a mythical being like Tok, otherwise he could have broken something. Tik licked at one of the scabs on his arm, which had started bleeding again. It tasted nice, like sherbet blood.
"YOU SHALL NOT KILL ME CAT!"
Tik's eyes narrowed at Tok's. She'd meant to hit him! She thought he was going to kill her? Oh, it was on.
The alp launched himself towards the elf. He used feet and claws to grab at tie, breast, hair and anything else he could snatch hold of as he scrambled up Tok's body. He wrapped his legs around her neck in a headlock and clenched her ears in both hands. He wiggled them around and released a built-up, rotten-milk smelling fart. His breath was just as bad as his little teeth nommed on her hair as he curled it around his moist tongue. It was likely she'd have to rinse it before she went out.
'I bring you the finest coffee syrup in town! I come to see you and what do I get?' Tok pulled on Tok's ears a little harder to make his frustration known. 'I get attacked by a nutter with crazy cat dreams!'✦•·.·´¯`·.·•✦•·.·´¯`·.·•✦•·.·´¯`·.·•✦•·.·´¯`·.·•✦•·.·´¯`·.·•✦
