OK, so I just read that Smart.fm is rebranding itself as iKnow (again), and going paid.
The old smart.fm site will be accessible to old users (they stopped taking new sign ups) March, 31st, and the new iKnow will be free until march 1st
for new users and April 1st for current users. The price is 12$ per month.

It was a good place to rip decks to Anki from, even if I didn't learn/review things on the site. Any Smart.fm users want to share their comments?

Hmm, I only use it to rip decks to Anki. sweatdrop I think Ukryu really liked it though.

I almost died when I read the thread title but it's not really closing down, it's just becoming pay-to-use. xd They've been saying for a while that they'd add an optional pay-to-use option but you can't use it for free at all anymore? I use smart.fm a lot during breaks, but it crams too much info into my head during the school year so I only use anki then. I could live with just anki if it came down to it, but if they add a bunch of new features that make it worth paying for, I'm definitely paying for it. So I guess I'll give this free trial a shot.

Am I really that obviously a fanboy? xd *I'm Ukryu, btw*

Edit: Uh, they haven't added any new features, at all? Unless they fix some of the problems that are already existing no one's going to pay to use it. I agree a lot with what tofugu said.

Ah, sorry. I guess I should have been more specific, though I guessed that most people here wouldn't care (check out this thread in another forum I visit, some people there are definitely feeling betrayed). The old smart.fm site will be accessible to old users (they stopped taking new sign ups) March, 31st, and the new iKnow will be free until march 1st for new users and April 1st for current users. The price is 12$ per month. I'm ripping any Japanese Smart.fm list that might be useful to Anki right now...

I checked out the new site and it seems buggy and the social aspect of it is "coming soon" but you currently can't see the profiles, or even the usernames of those who uploaded lists. sweatdrop And, no, no new features besides unless messing with the layout counts as a "feature".

And, yeah. But I'm an Anki fangirl, so it's all good. XD

Made me sad. emo I started using Smart.fm before Anki and I really liked its system a lot. I started thoroughly using Anki today and I don't like the change at all. It could just be because of the lack of [Korean] content related to my skill level, but it doesn't motivate me. Smart.fm helped a lot as it had complete audio files, "graded" you, dictated your study time into thoroughness, etc.

I know it won't replace Smart.fm (which you can still use for free until April), but the Smart.fm plugin for Anki can rip any Smart.fm lists to Anki. I'm ripping all the Smart.fm content I'm interested in to Anki right now.

@lil_princess_007 You can use Smart.fm (and their new, buggy site, iKnow.jp ) until April then you need to pay 12$ per month if you want to keep using iKnow, and Smart.fm will close.

The Genki Online Self-Study Room is an excellent place to learn hiragana and katakana. :3 The site goes in hand with the Genki textbook, but you don't need the textbook in order to learn stuff in the self-study room.

Much love for introducing me to this I had no idea it existed. heart

edit; Wait, what? D:
"As of August 2010, smart.fm no longer provides a public API. This is a real shame for Anki users, as it means you can't get content you've studied on smart.fm into Anki. For the time being, the plugin will no longer work."

Nevermind, it works? Flawlessly. I am pleased. Thanks again.
