the balls spin and the announcer picks, first from the girls, then from the boys. She reads the names:

May the odds be ever in your favor!

Lance looked at the crowd and stepforward as mightilya nd strong as possible. "So, no voulenters?" He said to himself as he took his place on the stage calmly. He was making sure to be an intimidating force, even if it was only for the reporters.

They stood anxiously around the pedestal. Coal miners, bread bakers, shoe menders, all the people of 12 came. There wasn’t a sound. No whisper or the chatter of a squirrel. Ari breathed deeply. Her name was in there, once. The silence lasted 3 eternities. Finally, the mayor stepped up. He gave a speech Ari heard every year, she knew it by heart. The speech carried on about the games and the capitol, which made Ari’s blood boil. She flexed her fingers trying to calm herself. She wanted to scream. “Now without further ado, the reaping!” he said half heartedly. He reached into the tinted jar, and pulled out a scrap of paper, his face contorted with sadness. He spoke softly; “Tamirah Reinfeld”. I gasped and all eyes locked on her. Murmurs of “S-she’s only 12! She can’t go!” swept through the crowd, but little Mirah stood defiant and strong, her face set as stone. “No, no! She can’t go! I'll go!” her older brother Remus cried. You see, Remus had been in a mining accident, and his leg got crushed. “No. I’ll go.” Someone spoke softly. And that someone was me.
