Stark Mansion Library
Characters: Veck Rodgers & Pete Stark

Pete waited for people to clear out, she wanted to talk to him. It had been a long time since they stood face-to-face. Heโ€™ll ask for his fatherโ€™s room, the girl thought sharply. She wanted him too. She was betting that Veck would show up and want to be part of it because this place had housed his father for years and because the Avengers went hand-in-hand with Captain America. You have to be the one, Pete had decided that even before she started to research individuals to send invitations out to and she still had a few bargaining tools to sway Veck. Lets see if I can get him where I want him without having to bring out the big guns, with that on her mind she approached him.

She still looked like she was trying to be a clone of her father. Pete, perhaps, would never give that up. Papa was still god. โ€œThank you for coming, we donโ€™t have to dance around what we both know, Veck,โ€ The girl leveled blue eyes at the much taller force of Veck Rodgers. โ€œI cannot make a team bearing the Avengers name function without you.โ€ Pete was, by no means, unattractive but she kept that strange androgynous look that sheโ€™d had since a little girl from keeping her hair cut boyishly short and wearing more masculine clothing. It wasnโ€™t even that she didnโ€™t know how to dress or put on makeup or be sexyโ€ฆ but those times were reserved for the most important of parties. Her sweet sixteen she had been a gorgeous sight in a smooth black dress that left most of her back bear but here, again, she was androgynous.

Veck watched her approach him, his eyes narrowed slightly. He didn't agree with this. And a gut feeling said that neither would his father. Becoming a part of this new Avengers team would mean that he would have to become a part of SHIELD, and register for that ridiculous Act. And just because she was asking him to join, didn't mean he would. Veck was proud, and had no plans on accepting her offer. Crossing his arms over his chest, he frowned. The look was common for him now. What reason should he smile? With all this fighting and death, he was just like Pete was now, and how she always has been.

Cold.

"I have no interest in leading your new Avengers, Petre. They should not even bare the same name because of you and your father siding with the Registration Act."

While Pete had remained nearly the same over the years, boyish and cold, he had become cold as well, and of course his physical appearance had changed drastically as well. When they had first met, he was a strong looking, fairly cute boy. Now, in his simple 'dressed up' outfit, he was handsome. Though never being graced with the lavish parties that Tony had always thrown for his little girl, Veck knew how to work a suit, and the ladies as well. But not Pete. She always reminded him of just...a girly looking boy.

"Where's my father's room? Or did you and your father confiscate everything inside, and copyright it as Stark?" His words were bitter, for how the Stark family seemed to take over whatever they could get their hands on, and make it their own somehow. Like the very mansion they were inside.

Pete leaned back and laughed the same invincible short-lived ha-ha-ha of her father. When Ezekiel the son of Obadiah Stane attacked a Stark building during a great international think tank meeting it had nearly killed Petre, Veck, and Pepper. Both the kids had been there, Tony had thought the children would benefit from being at a party with a collection of minds he deemed bright enough to solve world problems but he had become distracted by a gaggle of girls, pissed off Pepper, and the woman had collected both Pete and Veck and stormed out. That had saved their lives. Everyone in that room but Tony was vaporized by the explosion.

And Pepper, Pete, and Veck, were buried under rubble from a couple stories of the high-rise when he crashed down on top of them. Pepper could sure run fast in high heels. Not fast enough. Veck lost his leg. Pete lost her arm. Pepper had severe internal injuries and, to this day, walked around with a glowing magnet in her chest. Pete had spent six months in the hospital and months more recovering. Veck had an edge because of the super soldier serum that he had inherited from his father while Pepper and Pete were still marked inside with various knick-knacks that had held them together like Humpty Dumpty. A couple billion in Pepper and a couple more in Pete, Veck sported a leg that was a 75 million dollar endeavor. Everyone else was dead. It had been a violent act which, to this day, bound Veck and Pete to have matching cybernetics on different body parts.

โ€œYou know that you have two fathers, Steve Rodgers and Anthony Stark deny it all you want my father had done everything for you, Veck!โ€ She showed some emotion, if Tony was brought into it, it was one of the only things that made her get emotional fast. โ€œHe tried to be a father to you! Heโ€™s paid for everything you wanted to do since your father died and you canโ€™t even give him the most common respect? He never says a bad thing about you-โ€ Pete stepped closer to him. โ€œThe Registration Act is old news, its time to get the hell over it, Rodgers!โ€ The tiny girl faced him, nearly on her tippy toes to try to get in his face, which was impossible because she was too small. โ€œYou like to walk around like youโ€™re hot s**t and youโ€™re hot s**t because of my father! Youโ€™re more my fatherโ€™s son than you are the Captainsโ€™!โ€
PostPosted: Wed Aug 04, 2010 9:29 am

"The only thing your father has ever done for me is provide me with my leg replacements." Veck snapped back, aggravated by that pompous laugh of hers. "Had it not been for your father, mine wouldn't have been killed, and you and Pepper wouldn't have nearly been killed as well. He's caused nothing but trouble for everyone around him." It was simple, how he saw it that way. Because it was basically true. Pete was trying to bring out the he took you in, gave you shelter crap, but he wasn't going to fall for it. Maybe he was acting a little childish about this whole matter, but who the hell cares? He wasn't about to let Pete think she could control him with just some meaningless words.

"And you've got it backwards, little Princess Stark. You're the one parading around like you're hot s**t because of your father. You think you can rule the world because of him, but you can't. Without compassion, and a heart, you're just a little tyrant. Nothing more." He growled as he looked down at her little figure. She thought that because she was her father's daughter, that she could have anything she wanted by simply throwing a fit and trying to act bigger than she was. But he wouldn't fall for it before, and wouldn't now.

"I will not lead your Avengers, and you are just going to have to accept that."

โ€œYouโ€™re still bitter about that night? That was Ezekiel Stane doing what his family does best, being psychotic.โ€ Peteโ€™s face twisted into a cold look and she stepped back from him, You donโ€™t even know the half of it, Veck, a empty core opened in her chest, the worry of reality, of how important it was to make this work. โ€œYou donโ€™t know me anymore,โ€ Sometimes I hate you, youโ€™re so impassive, youโ€™re so much like me and you werenโ€™t suppose to be! Pete squeezed her fingers into her palms. โ€œYour father didnโ€™t hold grudges or spend his life blaming other people, they both made their choices. Itโ€™s just as easy to say your father was wrong as it is to say mine was. Iron Man wants the Avengers back and Captain America would want the same-โ€ Pete didnโ€™t have an armor, Tony had never allowed her to be directly involved in that aspect. โ€œYou keep saying this is my Avengers, it can be yours, I want it to be yours what the hell do you think Iโ€™m trying to do here, Veck? Wouldn't you want to lead the way, Avengers Assemble, you know what it would mean to so many people to hear the son of Captain America say that and have his team swell up at his back like a proverbial wave of justice?" God that was lame, the girl winced internally. "Papa wonโ€™t let me be on the frontline,โ€ Youโ€™re such a jerk. โ€œYou know he won't," He knows he's got my invisible balls in a choke hold. "Iโ€™ll build you an Iron Man armor,โ€ I donโ€™t want to. โ€œCreate some kind of fusion between my familyโ€™s technology and your fatherโ€™s image so you can bear the indignity of wearing it. I'm on the forefront of a huge breakthrough, its going to generate billions and billions but what it will really do is reinvent Iron Man once more, you'd be the most powerful force on the planet. You could stand up to Hulk when I plug my new power into Iron Man tech." Cold Fusion, its going to work. "You want to be a hero, this is your chance!โ€ Iโ€™ll make you even better than they were. She put out her hand, โ€œLets go home together, show everyone thatโ€ฆ weโ€™re better than our parents inability to compromise.โ€ It was hard for her to give, her father never gave in. Her jaw was tight. Her back teeth clenched.

[-Dies- Crap post]

"I know you just fine. You're still the little Stark Brat that I had to spend all those months with as a kid." Veck growled again, trying to lace his words with acid. "Still Papa's little princess, following perfectly in his shadow, wanting everything he wants. Doing everything he asks you to do. Grow up, will you? Make your own decisions, and stop being your father's ******** twin."

On the topic of Iron Man, he clenched his teeth together tight and showed them for just a second. "Pete, get it through your ******** head! People don't give a s**t about Captain America anymore! Because he tried to stand up for what he believed in, he was killed, despite everything he's done for this ******** country! And here I am doing the same damn thing, and you're trying to force me into this."

Veck looked down at her little outstretched hand, his eyes still cold as ice. It took him only a brief second to decide how to react to her hand.

He walked away.

Petre had grown up under the fire of being a Stark, she had learned not to pay attention to what people said about her or her father but when Veck ripped into her she felt emotional pain. It cut across her belly, a forced seppuku. Iโ€™ve worked so hard stay even close to what my father expects of meโ€ฆ thirteen hour school days since I was six years old, Iโ€™ve never had a sip of alcohol, Iโ€™ve never been to a party without my fathers permissionโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve never even had a boyfriendโ€ฆ she wouldnโ€™t cry, crying was as difficult for Pete as saying sorry. Only Veck can do this to me! โ€œI care and so does my father but you obviously donโ€™t and thatโ€™s screwed up, you should care more than anyone about the memory of your own father,โ€ She felt her heartbeat picking up. Her slow words came, heavy with disappointment but it wasnโ€™t the disappointment of not having her way. It was a deeper sorrow. One that was disappointed in him and sad for the legacy she saw as being so bright and right, one that he didnโ€™t seem to care about. I told Papa I would make this work but itโ€™s falling apartโ€ฆand it hasnโ€™t even started yet, she jerked foreword and grabbed Veckโ€™s wrist. โ€œWeโ€™re not finished here! We have to work this out, even if you donโ€™t join the Avengers we both have things that need to be said, Veck! What if I have Papa come down and talk to you, is that what this is? You canโ€™t take a woman seriously? How about a man than?โ€ She pulled out her phone, ready to make the call. She wouldnโ€™t let him go, not that easily. โ€œRegardless if the Avengers re-forms or not, thereโ€™s more going on here!โ€ Pete didnโ€™t want to hint at that, not yet, but in her desperation to get him to stay she dropped it.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 04, 2010 12:37 pm

He snapped his hand back, out of her grasp and turned around to face her, fire in his eyes. "Don't give me that s**t, Pete! You and I both know that you've never cared about anyone but yourself, and your father. You remember how much we argued when we were kids? You constantly ordering me to just suck it up, calling me weak because I was mourning the loss of my only family. Your father was the same way. He didn't want to be burdened by the son of Captain America, so after the accident, he gave me a new leg and sent me on my way, like that would make up for everything."

Veck really didn't care what Pete thought of him right now. He felt empowered by finally being able to let out all of his pent up rage at her. No one had ever made him this mad before, which almost surprised him, but it also made a bit of sense too. It's just like when they were kids. Except he had the upper hand, because she needed him. He could feel it. She was getting desperate.

"Go ahead and call your father. It won't solve anything. I've said all that I needed to say." By the time Tony got here, he'd probably be gone by then. Besides, what the hell could he do to him? Veck was young, and stronger than Tony by a long shot. And a lot harder to convince.

โ€œWe both have to lead by example, Veck,โ€ Pete pressed. โ€œAnd I resent you holding it against me I look up to my father and-โ€ Screw this. She showed him empty hands. โ€œYou know what? You donโ€™t deserve to stand in your fathers position. Iโ€™ll lead the Avengers on my own, Iโ€™m smarter than everyone and I can be objective.โ€ She felt crushed, she had truly thought she could reach him and that things would work out. Papa can make this stuff work, why canโ€™t I? I donโ€™t understand! She stared at the phone, thinking of her father and how she was going to tell him that things hadnโ€™t gone so well. That hardly anyone had showed up to the meeting in the first place and those who had didnโ€™t seem like they were interested and a few were blatantly not interested. โ€œBesides that Veck,โ€ Pete gave a single laugh. โ€œYouโ€™ve been registered for years, stupid. Papa put you in the system himself. Did you forget that the people running the entire program sort of know your secret identity? We even keep the photo updated.โ€ She scoffed to the side. โ€œMoron. Just get out.โ€ Pete was feeling the sensation of being wrong. She felt a flush of anger at the hours she had already put into the design of the suit for Veck, never doubting that sheโ€™d be able to convince him to be part of the Avengers. โ€œโ€ฆsuch a waste of time, half the people in your stupid resistance are registered and donโ€™t even know it.โ€ It was pure spite at him, just wanting to lash out as she felt her power drifting away and her control over the situation totally floating down the creek without a paddle.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 04, 2010 2:17 pm

"Oh, what, and do you want me to thank you for that? Kiss my a**, Pete." It took a hell of a lot of self control to prevent Veck from just hitting her. The way he saw it, she totally deserved it. She thought she could walk all over him, but for once, he'd finally not allowed it. He wasn't going to let things be like when Tony had "so kindly" taken him in, and she treated him like dirt. Was it fair, for her to treat him like that? Not at all. Was it fair that he was making a complete idiot out of himself, just to finally piss her off? Maybe. But it sure as hell felt good to snap at her like he had. And regardless of his decision, Veck knew that his father, Captain America, wouldn't care. Even if he didn't want to carry on in the 'family business'. No matter what.

He was through talking to her, and was through just...being here, in "Stark" Mansion. He turned away again, this time completely determined to just leave.

Let him go... Pete closed her eyes tightly. She turned and leaned into the nearest desk, Now I have to tell Papa... I better head out to headquarters and get this in before Miss Hill puts him in a foul mood and makes this even harder for me. She felt all energy flood from her and a few tears dripped down the right side of her face, which she wiped away quickly. Why do you hate me, Veck? I'm... the young woman couldn't even think it. That word that Starks did not say.

Sorry.
