........................................................................................... โ๐ฝฮโฆโฅaโฉA strongly built man sat down beside Veck at the bar, taking the stool right beside him instead of keeping one between them like most guys did. A gold Rolex glinted on the manโs and he turned his head, still looking young but for some deep lines etched above each of his eyebrows. Tony Stark. Still with a clean goatee. A black suit with a burgundy tie. โYou know, youโre pretty easy to find.โ The man said smoothly. Tony was full of doubt. Full of worry. He had just found a window to leave S.H.I.E.L.D and find Veck, he wanted to have a word with the man and that changed everything. Heโs not a kid anymore, this is Steveโs grown son.โWhat can I get for you?โ The Bartender asked. โA coffee, please,โ Tony said. When the Bartender gave him a strange look he grunted, โI donโt drink.โ He turned towards Veck, knowing the boy must have really thrashed his child because he hadnโt heard that kind of insecurity on his daughterโs voice before--- at least not that he hadnโt caused. โWell, let me buy you a drink, Veck. You sent my daughter back to me in quite the state and after ten minutes with me, she stormed out and if I didnโt have her body so full of nanochips Iโd have no idea where she was.โ In that sense, Tony knew the two of them at least had one thing in common. They were the two people on the planet who could make Pete cry. I really dropped the ball this time, I was so set on not letting her come out of this without successโฆ but I ruined good in the game of perfection. The Bartender slide the coffee towards Tony, โThere ya are.โ โThanks.โ Tony said distractedly. โTalk to me, Veck. Veck stared at a single, peculiar looking glass on a shelf behind the bar and stirred the glass of water he had in front of him with a little straw. Like a cat, he had bristled and tensed the moment that Tony had appeared next to him. He should have known that he'd be able to find him. Probably put some tracking devices in his robotic leg. What a big surprise that was. He hated how Tony was, how he acted, how he presented himself. How he ruined Veck's life. His jaw shifted from side to side, grinding his teeth in anger. He didn't face Tony as he ordered a coffee.
You don't drink, my a**.
And now you're trying to be my friend. His blood began to boil and the muscles in his arms, and the rest of his body grew more tense. Like if Tony touched him, he'd end up punching him.
"I've got nothing to say. Quit acting like you're here to be friends, because I'm not interested." Anything Tony ever did was either for his own gain, or his daughters. Selfish b*****d. Why couldn't he just be left alone?

........................................................................................... โ๐ฝฮโฆโฅaโฉโHasnโt anyone ever told you itโs not smart to burn your bridges?โ Tony asked. He observed the tension in the manโs posture, the coffee was terrible. Bitter. It had nothing redeeming about it but Tony ignored it, he hadnโt come here to sample fine drinks, this really wasnโt his kind of place. Suddenly he laughed but it was a sad sound, as if he suddenly realized he was tired. โYou know, I still have dreams that I pull your fatherโs casket up from those black freezing waters and Iโve discovered some way to bring him back. Then I wake up. I have to relive the biggest mistake Iโve ever made,โ He shifted in his chair. โWas it worth it? No. And then I lower my head and I knowโฆโ Tony bowed his head closer to the coffee mug. โI know you were right, Steve.โ He whispered to the bad coffee. His words caused soft ripples. โแฟ ศำ ะาพสสเนแฟ าะนศญแพ ฯฮฯฉาฌโ

"Well, isn't that great. I feel so much better." Veck replied sarcastically, continuing to stir the ice cubes in his water. Why was it that whenever he had nothing else to say, those who were talking to him kept wanting to talk? He had already made up his mind. So what the hell was the point? He didn't want anything to do with the Stark family, but it seemed like for some stupid reason, they wanted him to listen to them, and do what they wanted him to do. He wasn't a pawn.
"I'm so glad you realized the mistake you'd made. Though it is a little late. Now. What do you want from me. I'm not leading Pete's Avengers. I've had enough of your little princess. She's not going to push me around like she used to, when we were kids."
His gray eyes were still set on staring at the glass behind the bar. He didn't even want to look at Tony, because there was no reason to. It would only make him more angry. At the moment, his heart was just a cold, black hole, unaffected by anything anyone said to him. Just filled with destructive rage.

........................................................................................... โ๐ฝฮโฆโฅaโฉ โPrincess?โ Tony straightened up. โIโve been harder on my child than any parent I have ever met. Donโt you remember?โ He questioned with a black eyebrow moving up. โShe never came first and she should have, she should have been my little Princess but she didnโt get to be that. Did you know that she has nine masters and six of them are from M.I.T?โ He regarded the boy with an even stare. โIt doesnโt look like youโve faired, personality-wise, any better than she has. The two of you-โ โ Papa.โ The girls voice twisted behind him. Tony turned around on the tool. โDarlinโ!โ โWhat are you doing?โ The touch of suspicion came through her voice. โI already talked to him, its done, lets leave him alone.โ But you had to do better, right Papa? Because I didnโt do a good enough job, right, not even close? That struck her even more, through the way he had told her she should know how to put together a little โrag tag teamโ of kids by now, that by her age he could have taught a bag of rocks to fight crime. โIโm not going to rub him the wrong way, Pete, just relax,โ Tony shook his head. He turned back around, he didnโt give the girl much credit despite trying to build her up in Vecks mind a moment ago. He treated her somewhere between nagging wife and incompetent protรฉgรฉ. โBesides, you donโt want him anyway; heโs got enough anger issues to boil my tea for the next three centuries.โ She felt flushed with many things, โI donโt.โ Was all she could manage to say. โI donโt,โ She repeated. โI just wanted to handle this myself, this was my job and-โ โAnd you botched it.โ Tony cut her off. โEnd of discussion. If you want to try something new, sit down, if not, go home. Iโll take care of it.โ Her hands loosened at her sides, why does he have to treat me like a little kid in front of Veck? Why does he- she looked away from her fatherโs back as he sipped his coffee slowly, not really interested in it, she could tell by the way he drank it. He drank that way when he didnโt like it and was trying to humor the company or the cook, if he liked what he was drinking he took quick gulps, lips barely on the glass for a half-second. She had spent her whole life in observation of the way her father did things, down to the way he drank coffee and if he tugged to the right or the left. โI donโt want you to take care of it, the whole point of this is for you to not take care of it!โ Her voice twisted up, she approached the back of the stool beside her father. Suddenly, Veck didnโt make, the two locked eyes and both of them had the critical clarity of a fanatic. โPete-โ He took a warning tone. โIโm twenty years old, Papa, you-you-" โThen start acting like it, its not my fault you couldnโt make this work Petre!โ Tony raised his voice. โYou wanted to take the reigns, youโve been complaining about being stuck working on formulas and fixing my armors for months now. This is the real world. People are difficult, arenโt they? You have to push harder, you donโt have the social smarts to handle something like this, you never have.โ โYou always say thatโฆโ Pete trailed but her voice was loosing its place. It was uncanny how fast Tony could take her and mash her into a little ball, heโd always been in control, heโd always been the big boss. He still was. Pete would never get away from daddy, not on her own anyway. Her lips parted but nothing came out. โYou have a masters in Business and you canโt sell a bag of frozen fish to a guy who is standing on the side of the road with a sign that says, desperately seeking a bag of frozen fish.โ Tony pushed the coffee away. Pete felt moisture in her eyes, โThatโs not fair, youโre making comparisons to-to something unrealistic to the scope of what Iโm trying to do. This isnโt anykind of marketing, this isnโt a good speech--- Iโm trying to get people to heal, to come together, to fix what your side of the fight caused and what the other side caused and barely anyone wants to cooperate with me! Iโd have an easier time selling a bag of dicks to a Catholic Nun!โ โGo home.โ Tony stared at her. He didnโt move. He didnโt even blink. He tilted his chin down enough to look down at her. Peteโs bottom lip trembled and she clenched both hands into fists, โThis isnโt my fault-โ โDonโt you dare give me the excuses of a three year old,โ Tony turned towards the Barkeeper. โHey, pal there seems to be an absence of the โol hooch around here, pour me a dark whiskey sour, will ya?โ โOh, oh thatโs cute Papa, now youโre going to drink me away, huh? You managed to stay sober what, two days this time?โ The girls voice pitched up more. It started to fit her small form better. As she squabbled on beside him like a parrot he leaned closer to Veck. โGod forbid you ever get stuck as a single father and god forbid if you do that you have a girl.โ He noted, sounding as sexist as he possibly could. The Bartender set the drink down which Tony took up instantly and swallowed a gulp of. โYou need to remove this young lady from the bar, sheโs not old enough to be drinking.โ He added. Peteโs face transformed into a furious glare towards the Bartender when the man opened his mouth, โIโm with my father!โ โDonโt drag me into this crap.โ The Bartender grunted. โช ๐๐๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ยฅ ๐๐๐๐๐ โฎ0 ๐๐ ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐โข.โขโข โขโข.โขโข.โขโข โขโข.โขโญโฅ

"And I've been through eight 'Hero's' homes since you dumped me back out on the street, with training every single day for hours each day. Poor Pete. She has to /think/. Strain like that when you're just a kid isn't fun either, you know." Veck replied to Tony, finally bothering to return the stare he'd been given. Looking away when Pete showed up, he remained silent the entire time, listening as her voice steadily got higher and higher in pitch as she got more and more frustrated and embarrassed. It took a bit of effort for him to not laugh at her shrill voice.
Only her father could get her like that.
When it finally ended between the two, with Tony trying to get her thrown out, Veck turned to face her in his seat. "Why are you here, Pete?" He asked simply, his eyes looking tired now, not as angry as they were during their conversation earlier. "Just do what your father's telling you and leave."
He didn't want her around, or Tony either. He just wanted to be alone for once, not sparring with some older hero friend of his, or out doing some random mission that he was asked to carry out, or any of that crap. He just wanted to be alone, to sit here at the bar, maybe drink his troubles away temporarily, and think.

........................................................................................... โ๐ฝฮโฆโฅaโฉ Petre stared at Tony and then past him, at Veck. โBecause the two of you are here, thatโs why Iโm here but it doesnโt matterโฆโ The young woman exhaled, trying to give up some of the tenseness she felt. Can I make this work without the son of Captain America? โAlright.โ She said, voice dying down with her confidence, energy, and willpower. Tony swallowed the rest of his drink, well this didnโt work out like I thought it would, Iโll have to tell her what was on my mind later tonightโฆ Iโm sorry darlinโ, went and yelled at you for nothinโ. Stark knew she would understand, probably even think his idea had been a good one. He knew nothing brought two people together easier than finding a common enemy, he didnโt really want to be that guy, but he figured for this night heโd bite the bullet to try to get Veck Rodgers to feel something besides anger. Stubborn like his god damn father, I should have knownโฆ Tony rolled his head around his shoulders, feeling a delicious pop in his neck. Pete left. โWell you know, Veck,โ Tony got off the stool. โWith as many bad cards as youโve been dealt, eventually, you either quit playing the game or you get over it and keep playing. Since you seem to resent me for throwing money at you, Iโll stop,โ He tossed a hundred dollar bill on the counter. โI have a lot of other people who wish Iโd throw money at them, and by the way, I didnโt mean any of those things I said about my daughter I was trying to get you to be a knight in shining armor, you failed miserably,โ He lifted a hand in a goodbye to the bartender who had already collected the bill from the counter with a nod. โ Chow.

"Knight in Shining Armor? Oh please. Don't give me that crap. What, did you want me to save your little girl from your harsh words? She's strong. She can deal with it, and her little pawns as well." Veck grumbled and arched backwards in a wonderful feeling stretch. Turning around to face Tony, his eyes still looked tired, not mad like just moments ago. This whole thing was leaving him feeling oddly drained.
"Tell Pete to give me a good, solid reason for why I should bother doing what she wants me to, and I just might be willing to oblige. None of that 'because you're Cap'n's son' stuff. An actual reason."
He wanted to see what Pete /actually/ thought of him. Every time they'd been even in just the same room, they would fight. But if she was getting so upset of him not wanting to lead this new Avengers team, there had to be...something else...

........................................................................................... โ๐ฝฮโฆโฅaโฉ โDonโt you get it?โ Tony turned back. He took a sleek pair of sunglass out of the inner pocket of his suit. โThis isnโt about being right or being wrong and it is sure not about someone exerting their will over someone else. If Petre wanted to have you under her control sheโd have made herself the leader and you beneath her, she wants you to lead. Not because youโre Steveโs sonโฆ because she cares for you, she trusts you. Pete doesn't... care for or trust many people and, maybe, that's my failure as a parent. I do know if she didnโt care, she wouldnโt engage in these emotional arguments with you. Sheโd turn off and turn away, she wouldnโt even blink in your direction.โ Tony put the sunglasses back, Geeze, Stark, you really are distractedโฆ forgot its night time, not the normal hour for needing sunglasses. โ516-616-904,โ Tony said. โThatโs her number. Call her.โ

Pete, caring about him? Since when was it even possible for that girl to care about anything but herself and her father? Then it dawned on him. She'd never gotten so worked up talking to anyone else but him and Tony. What the hell was wrong with him? Violently Veck slammed his forehead against the bar, scaring the bartender, and leaving a big red mark on his head. The impact was strong enough to make any normal person bleed, but seeing as he wasn't normal, he didn't. Setting his head back down against the bar, he fished his phone out of his pocket, and dialed her number. It rang once, twice, three...four times, then silence. It didn't go to her voice mail, so he assumed she had answered it, but was still too upset about what had just happened to say anything.
"Pete?" He asked and raised his arms to rest them on the bar, like he was trying to hide himself behind them. "Pete...I'm...I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to be such an a*****e..." Veck felt awkward, and almost somewhat ashamed of himself, for giving in. "You gotta understand why I was..." He sighed loudly, "Nevermind. You wouldn't understand."

I donโt even know why Iโm doing this,โ Confidence gone. Tonyโs words had done their work, as only his words could. She couldnโt find her feet unless he told her they were attached to her ankles. โDonโt be sorry.โ Petre had never liked that word, though it was one that was never said in the Stark house. Pete would say sorry to Tony but Tony never said sorry to her and she never said sorry to anyone else. Sometimesโฆ smart people were really stupid. โI donโt know what Iโm doing, when you donโt know what youโre doing you make mistakes,โ Her simple logic was self-defeating. โI canโt make mistakes, Veckโฆ when we were kids, I thought you were the greatest thing next to my father but I didnโt know how to talk to you, to anyone, I still donโt I guessโฆ heh sometimes I feel alien. Genius. Social retard. Some trade off.โ Over the phone it was easier to say these things, things she was sure if they had been standing face-to-face she would not have opted to say. โYou know when we were little, I thought we had this great destiny together. It was about as fantasy oriented as I think my mind has ever been. I had this hypnosis because we both had cybernetics, that we wereโฆ oh, I dunno anymore-โ She sighed harshly. โTwo halves to some greaterโฆ engine, I suppose butโฆ its senseless, no fact, noโฆ.โ Just stop talking.Standing outside the bar, the occasional person passed her in the street. Veck laughed slightly, just a somewhat lighthearted chuckle. "Pete, you don't know how to talk to people because of how dense you are." He teased. That sure as hell was how it seemed. Despite how smart she was, she'd always been socially awkward. That's where her father came in handy, and why she stuck to him like glue, because she knew she almost never properly talk to people. She could do public speaking just fine, but at least with him, talking on a personal level always seemed to wind up in an argument one way or another.
Their personalities clashed on numerous occasions, but also seemed to fit well together. Wait, why am I thinking about this? Listening to her continue on, he sighed softly. "Pete, that's why I'm here..." He said gently, which kind of surprised him. "When you don't know how to do something, I can do it for you. And vice versa. I can't do none of that science and math crap worth my life. Don't be so hard on yourself, alright? Everything will work out fine..."

She had never had a crush on a boy. Never really like anyone, fact or fiction. Tony had not let her be in situations where it ever had a chance of happening but now, twenty years old, standing outside a bar holding a phone against her ear she felt it rumble. I canโtโฆ Pete whispered in her mind, all she could do to keep some feeling of control. She suddenly remembered being very small, crying, and having her father standing over her, hands on his hips, staring down with cold blue eyes when she was crying nonsense. Use your words. He snapped. โVeck,โ She finally said something. โI donโt want you to hate me, you know. I didnโtโฆ control myself back at the Mansion. I-โ Sorry still couldnโt come. Wouldnโt come. โDo you have somewhere to stay tonight?โ Her voice, usually rather monotone or distant, had become soft. It was small this way. Small and feminine and lacking any real power, if he didnโt know what she looked like on the other end of the phone it would have been one of those voices men just liked. Something to whisper in your ear, oh youโre my hero. But the girl on the other end was tiny little Pete Stark, cold little fingers wrapped up in some technological disaster and mind a bundle of tangled wires that somehow still operated despite their chaotic form. Of course, what she asked sounded very much like a girl asking a guy to come spend the night with her in one of those softer, not straightforward ways that still made perfect sense.

"I don't hate you, Pete..." Veck muttered softly, his voice just as gentle as hers, but with a masculine growl to it that seemed to assure that he meant what he said. A strange little warm feeling came over him at hearing her fragile little voice. He'd never heard her like that, but it seemed to pull at his heartstrings, making him want to just shield little Pete from all her problems. Like he was supposed to. He was here to protect everyone that he could, all the innocent, fragile souls. That's why he was Captain America's son. "I feel horrible for how much of an a** I was..." He mumbled, mostly to himself. Tilting his head slightly--even though his forehead was resting on his arm--at her question of where he was staying, he couldn't figure out how to answer. Of course he had somewhere to stay, but it sounded like she really wanted his company.
"No, I don't."

No stupid theories. No random equations. Just me. She focused on the car, Lotus Evora, something imported from Europe. The blue was fierce. โIโd let you drive but youโve probably had too much fun in thereโฆโ The small girl looked back at the bar door, feeling that same pit in her stomach. She reached up and touched her short black hair, style-less and boyish and for the first time she felt ugly and awkward. Things she had not thought of before. Supercutsโฆ Pete sighed, one of her fathers nicknames for her which had spawned from an argument heโd had with Maria Hill. One of many. Even though she had a penthouse in Stark Tower III, the same as her father did in the second tower, Pete usually stayed in the second tower in the same room sheโd had since being a little girl.
