~~This topic has been locked and the story has been moves to it's own subforum as a role-play. I will post what I've liked from this in the intro of that role-play. i hope this will get ideas flowing on this story, because we've let it go stagnant.~~

This is where the story that started it all will take place. This story started in the forums and is the reason I got frustrated and decided to start a guild. There will be a small number of dedicated writers working here to keep things from getting muddied up. The general idea (copied from the forum) is posted below.

So, I will break the idea into point form, because it is simply a general idea at this point. Actual writing will, of course, be done in paragraph form, but there is much planning to be done ahead of time.

The story I have in mind:
- Occurs in a world after a given type of apocalypse (we would decide which kind together).
- Has very advanced technology, but only in very limited sources. (The general populous may not even know it exists)
- This technology:
--- exists for a reason we must determine
--- can be used to do things we must determine
--- works on a power source we mus determine
--- was developed by a group we must determine in a time we must determine
This society has three main groups, not including the general populous.
--- 1. the corrupt government
--- 2. a corrupt anti-government group: these people claim to be anarchists and freedom fighters but are little more than terrorists and thugs
--- 3. a small but powerful rebellion group: these people are highly intelligent, they fight to free certain individuals from the world of the government and anti-government and want a way of life different from the one they are trapped in, they are often thought to be a myth or not recognized at all, they are the group the protagonist or protagonists belong to

*reserved*
This post will include things that must go first. It may include decisions made by the groups, characters, and other important information.

Questions we need to answer:
• What events led to the apocalyptic situation?
• What type of “apocalypse” was it? (i.e. nuclear holocaust, medical issue, etc.)
• What kind of world has it left behind?
• How long has it been since the world as we once knew it came to an end?
o What is the dating system now? (How do they measure time? What is the common era known as?)
• Is there any type of press?
• How do people communicate with each other?
• How do people survive in this world?
• What are families like now?
• What medical condition is the human race as a whole in?

• What led to the current government being in power?
• How do these people maintain their position of authority?
• What is their motivation?
• Do they have any supporters? Why?
• What type of people are they?
• Were these people always like this?
• Are they responsible for the current situation, descendants of the people responsible, or a different group all together?
• Who are they (as a group, and individually)?
• What technologies are they privy to?

• Who are the opposition?
• What makes them think they have the right to lead?
• In which ways are they corrupt?
• Do they have any supporters?
• How does the government deal with them?
• How do they affect the world they live in?
• What are their intentions?
• What were their intentions at the onset?
• What technologies are they privy to?
• How are they organised?
• How do they challenge the power of the government?
• What keeps them working together?
• Who are key figures in this opposition?
• Who are the rebels?
• What keeps them working together?
• What are they trying to accomplish?
• What technologies are they privy to?
• How have they acquired these technologies?
• What kind of information do they have that the masses don’t?
• How have they acquired this information?
• How do they use or plan to use this information?
• Where are their headquarters?
• What kind of headquarters are they?
There are evidentially more questions; however we have a lot to do just tackling these questions. I am sure we will come upon more that has to be solved together. This isn’t a survey, we don’t need to all come up with answers to all these questions and compare notes. Instead, we should tackle these questions together. I’d like to set up times to write together, if this is not possible, it will take a lot longer. We could also work on things in teams, but again I’d prefer to work on things together.
Remember, we don’t have to include all this mental research in the story. A good writer always knows a lot more about his/her characters than the readers will ever need to know.

Alright, so everyone should check the list of questions we have to answer. If possible, let's try to get down a time where most of us will be online, so we can try to tackle the massive task before us.

I hope you don't mind a slight science fiction twist as to how the apocalypse occurred.

• What events led to the apocalyptic situation? A religion sprang up amidst the world, calling themselves the Order of the Black Wing. At the height of their power, they had acquired around one million followers. The leader of said religion, named Dorian, had declared that their god (who is unknown to the followers of said religion), willed that certain members of the human race be eradicated so that their god may mass his army easily. They set about a small skirmish between Russia and Europe, which eventually spread into other countries around the globe. After three years of war, Dorian had then declared that their god grew tired of the battles, and willed that it (the war) be felled by mass suicide.

At this point in the Order's power, they had amassed over sixty seven million followers, and at Dorian's request, each and every member of the Black Wing committed suicide in their homes, along with murdering their own families. After this mass genocide, Dorian had strapped a bomb to himself, and strode into a nuclear chemical factory in America, posing as a worker. He detonated the bomb inside the factory, causing an enormous explosion, which wiped out a huge area around it. As the nuclear threat rose, it eventually spread throughout America and its neighboring countries, causing a nuclear sickness that wiped out most of the population left.

Two months after this disaster struck, a mysterious plague similar to the nuclear sickness in the west had struck the eastern countries, causing many people to mutate or die. It did not, however, affect the vegetation or soil in the eastern countries as it did in the west. (This idea is still a work in progress)

• What type of “apocalypse” was it? A combination of mass genocide and nuclear holocaust.
• What kind of world has it left behind? A barren wasteland with little vegetation. Many of the buildings and constructs are still intact, but barely, as the nuclear scare had caused an enormous riot throughout the countries. Most of the water is tainted or polluted.

• How long has it bee) n since the world as we once knew it came to an end? Since the war, it's been around thirty years that this story takes place (meaning that the apocalyptic event is still fresh in the people's minds)

o What is the dating system now? The people cannot measure time, at least the ones that do not live in large civilizations. The people that are allowed to measure time live in large habitats about the size of a small city, which have acquired a winded clock that is constantly watched out for.

• Is there any type of press? No. The only semblance of press is a small rumor mill that is circulated through people known as Runners (who are basically postmen/women who pass information off to one another, telling of these rumors to people they may come into contact with)

• How do people communicate with each other? Paper still exists, but it is extremely hard to come by. Writing letters and sending them through Runners are the only way to communicate over great distances. In close proximity, the people still speak their basic languages, passing their language teachings on to their children and relatives.

• How do people survive in this world? The people survive by rationing food that was saved during the apocalypse. There are very large stations that are guarded by higher officials, that hand food out sparingly to the people. The less fortunate ones, that don't live in large habitats or civilizations, are forced to scavenge and hunt to the best of their ability.

• What are families like now? Family values are still the same. Brothers and sisters are the same, as are other relatives. They tend to stick close by each other during this time period, keeping a strong sense of family honor.

• What medical condition is the human race as a whole in? The human race as a whole is mostly average in health, but there are a large number of less fortunate people that have mutated and become hostile, cannibalistic creatures who are filled with instinctual rage.

That's all I have so far for the first set of questions. It's pretty rough, but I figured I'd let it out. Let me know what you think.

Alright, as a whole I think it is very imaginative, and we can use some of it. That being said, I'm not sure a base written by one person is a great way to start. I find that this seems a lot like a combination of District 9 and fallout, although I'm not sure this is what you were heading for.

Using a religious base may be a good idea, however I think it would be better if we followed the lines of something like V for Vendetta or the historical holocaust if we were going to do that. An arms race or something similar to the cold war could also be used. I'm not sure that mass suicide would work, because we still want power struggles to make sense now.

A religious turn of events would also allow us to create a new common era based on the timelines of that religion. People in re-established societies would then measure years in this common-era. I believe, however, that they would be intelligent enough to come up with a record of time involving a communal calendar and such, along with the clock. This calendar may, however, base its months on lunar cycles, or something of the like.

A food supply controlled by "the government" as well as one controlled by the terrorist group may be a good idea. I believe it would also be good if some of the technology available makes it possible to follow traditional methods of food production. That way, the government always seems capable of holding the power on food and seem benevolent. The masses would not know they are in fact lying and mass producing food. This could then be some of the knowledge held by the rebels.

I think that if we use the idea of runners we should have two separate groups. One would deliver the messages of the governing group. They would include criers. The media would be strongly influenced by the government (in the same way the media in real life is). All messages sent by these people could therefore be censored or intercepted by the government group.

As could be imagined, the other runners would be controlled by the terrorist group in a similar way. They could also spread government conspiracy theories this way.

I think most families should be destroyed. Blood families should be hard to come by. This may be possible if, for example, many of the people from the preceding generation has been killed. The actual technicalities of this should be worked out by us as a group.

And I don't like the idea of people resembling zombies or ferral ghouls, although this is a great character type, zombies are a story all their own.

Ahhhh ballhockey... I'm late for work, I'll be back in an hour or so for a little bit.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 20, 2010 8:46 pm

I wasn't really aiming for those two archetypes. I've never played Fallout or seen District 9. redface

As for your ideas, they seem solid. The Runners working for specific organizations or groups is good; they could relay information to outposts, officials, etc.

I agree on your comment about the religious base. It was a pretty rough idea as it stands. An arms race or something similar seems a little overused, but I think we can tweak that to our liking as we go.

Lastly, I agree with your idea for criers and censorship. But what about the people that don't live in those large areas, but out in the land?

I've actually been doing some thinking that would affect a lot of things, especially the idea of people out in the land. The main medical problem I had in mind when I though of this story years ago was inspired by the picture that inspired the whole idea.

Whatever the problem is, there is likely to have been a lot of destruction and stuff blowing up. Whatever this is, it would likely be something like mega-smog. People are likely to have a lot of breathing problems if the air isn't purified. I'm thinking there are areas that are worse, and areas that are better. The big civilizations popped up in areas that are generally decent to breathe. The government sets up the cities and outposts there. They will also have indoor places that are safe to breathe in regardless of the days conditions. They will claim this is because the god figure blesses those places, but it will actually be an air filter technology controlled by the governing groups. Saying that air within the city limits isn't breathable a certain day despite whatever reason the citizens are given for it being clean (or despite the availability of air filters) can keep people confined to given areas, it's a great method of population control.

The only people that would be "out there" would either be on their own to deal with things, hoping to get rescued, or part of one of the groups with the technology to be out there. The rebel base camp is likely to be out there surviving on what little technologies they could acquire.

I'm thinking there would be some parts of rainforest that were not completely destroyed and that naturally create a haven with safe air and food, but most people of any class would think these are just legends. We may never find out for sure it it's true.

I apologize for my convoluted writing, it's more stream on consciousness than writing at this point.

Also: medication would be very hard to come by. People with conditions we now consider treatable would be likely to die unless they were part of the government or made a black market deal with the terrorist group. The rebels may have very limited resources for solving these problems as well.

I have some other great ideas for twists and such, but I'll leave my barrage of information at this.

Just a dream I had one time, genetically engineered cockroaches from the US government, meant for a war that we're in, they get loose and spread through the population. They work by inplanting a diesease through the skin of whatever they come in contact with. The diesease eats away at your body and produces radiation, so you either die or mutate. most people tape over their entire houses so the roaches cant get in. Just a thought.
