Nobody trusted anyone else anymore. After a series of wicked consuls, the populace had become disillusioned. The consulate had needlessly wasted a great deal of the kingdom’s wealth, and now there was little by which the country could support itself. Faced with an imminent economic crisis, people began to turn away from each other, focusing solely upon their own individual needs. The seeds of doubt and suspicion had been sown. As people became unable to put food upon their own tables by conventional means, the crime rate steadily grew. Greed and need forced people out of their homes, causing them to become thieves and murderers, doing what they can just to get by. Of course, this only worsened the distrust between neighbors. When anyone could cut you down at any moment just to feed themselves for another day, it was no wonder that people became paranoid and deeply suspicious of the intentions of others. Soon, it became a great rarity that people ever banded together for any single cause; the only times this occurred was when people came to perceive a common threat against certain collectives of people. Even then, people kept one eye at their back.
Time passed, and nothing was showing any sign of getting better. So, it was a great surprise to all when a messenger came from the lonely little village of Ridgewood bearing a distress plea. Naturally, it was largely disregarded as a ploy to lure people away from the safe walls of town and into the increasingly-dangerous wilderness. But, some saw that this man had braved the dangers of monsters, demons, and bandits and would not have done so if the situation were not dire. Others simply saw that the village was in chaos and its defenses were low—people and riches ripe for the picking. Whatever the reason, a small group of people began to close in on the town of Ridgewood to answer the call. What peril could be awaiting them, however, none could even begin to fathom…
The rules for this game will be mostly the same as all others. I'm going by Version 3.5 rules. Starting level will be 1. The total value of all starting items and gold shall be no more than 60g + (1d10 x 10g). Thus, everyone should get between 70g and 160g to use as they please. If you intend to take the Leadership feat or RP anything to that effect, you will have a very difficult time convincing the population to do so. Moreover, all PCs and NPCs will have a situational bonus of +10 to Sense Motive and +5 resistance to illusions. Other bonuses--and a handful of penalties--may exist but are currently being kept secret for storyline purposes. Experiment as you please if you want to discover these effects for yourself. If you wish, your character may hail from a foreign land and thus not be subject to these modifiers.
The RP will begin when we have three characters other than my own. I believe we already have two waiting in the wings, so that just leaves one more. When the RP begins, I will put out the introductory post. Also, I'll try to get the auxiliary post out so you guys have a little more history and background to work with.

It was a bitter autumn day. It felt like winter already, but this was nothing compared to the frigid cold that would inevitably follow. As a soft breeze whistled through the trees, its chilly blades cut deep into the skin. The sun had long since been blotted out, its warming rays obscured by wispy, smoky-colored clouds. With the gloomy shade of the trees, little light reached the forest floor. The trees themselves seemed to be reaching out toward the trail, begging passers-by for some mere semblance of respite from nature’s cold grasp. Even the ground itself seemed forlorn, having been abused by recent rains and hardened into its current state.
These woods were rarely traveled anymore. Most of the old wagon tracks were washed away in the rainstorms. A haze hung drearily in the air, an ethereal remnant of a primeval war. Yet these alone were no deterrent for a small wooden carriage making its way along the abandoned path. A lone driver sat at the front, guiding a pair of speckled horses along the path. They hardly needed any encouragement; they looked positively anxious to get out of the forest. Yet, they kept a slow trot, not breaking the pace set for them. The driver seemed to echo their worries, looking all about her as she spurred on the horses. She seemed to be especially wary, even taking efforts to look into the treetops themselves. She was clearly expecting something, and by her expression, it was something that wished her ill. Hearing a small snap, she whisked her head to the left and spotted a lone stranger along a side-trail…

I step out of the wood, lost and confused, my bow in my hand. My slightly pointed ears slightly scratch against some branches. I notice the trail before wagon. I look back into the woods and yell, "Sir! I found the trail!" I finally look up to notice wagon. I stand straight up as I had been walking low to avoid sharp branches and keep track of the ground to avoid tripping over anything. "Oh, didn't think we'd meet anyone out here."

She kept on her guard. He may well have been telling the truth, but she didn't particularly trust him. "Shortcut? There's no such thing in these woods." She eyed him suspiciously, grasping the reins so she could take off at a moment's notice.
As the shadows played across the forest floor, the priestess grew even more wary. Without warning, she took off, spurring on her horses. They hurried out of view, disappearing around a shrouded bend. Suddenly, a shrill scream could be heard from the direction in which the carriage traveled.
