Name: Jane Sycamore
Occupation: Professor
Residence: Unknown
Gender: Female
Age: 33

History: Jane was born in Violet City in the Johto reagon. Her mother had once been a Kimono Girl but now taught dance in Ecruteak. Her father was a little-known pokémon professor whose main study was the pokémon Unown. A lot of Jane's early childhood was spent with a nanny as both parent's were busy with their careers.

When Jane turned 8 her mother decided it was time she began learning to dance as well, so she was given a tricolored eevee - cream, pink, and gold - which she named Trista and began training with her mother in Ecruteak. However, she only remained there a year as it quickly became clear she had neither grace nor rhythm. Instead she began accompanying her father on his trips to the Ruins of Alph. Over time she developed a love of research as well.

When Jane was 17 her father took the train to Kanto in order to speak at an academic convention while Jane stayed in Azalea Town. She never saw her father again, on the train ride home there was a terrible accident which killed seven including him. As relations between Jane and her mother were already strained, Jane decided it was time to set out on her own and try to make a name for herself in the pokémon world.

She stayed in Azelea for a few years, working with Burt (Kurt's father, Kurt was only 10 at the time) and learning about pokéballs. She decided that wasn't the research for her and left when she was 20. She decided she needed an entirely fresh start and took the long ride to the newly settled Hoenn. Much of Jane's initial research involved mapping out the water currents and deep underwater canyons of Hoenn's southeast region. Her work led to the founding of Sootopolis, but due to her young age she is not credited with it.

At 28 Jane left Hoenn for the Sinnoh region and continued her trend of researching just about anything that wasn't quite pokémon - berries, geography, weather, etc. Some researchers think perhaps Jane is trying to stay as far away from her father's research as possible so as not to be haunted with memories of him. During all this time Trista was her constant companion and Jane had no desire to see her evolve. Perhaps she should have invested in an everstone, because while in Sinnoh an act of extreme kindness and chivalry caused her to evolve into Armoreon - a species Jane knew nothing about. It wasn't long after that when she heard about Astrea Island and a professor making extraordinary discoveries about eevees and their evolutions.

Jane left Sinnoh at 32, a few months after Trista had evolved, and arrived at Astrea. She focuses much of her research on Astrea's four very different mountains and also on occasion helps Professor Yew with whatever projects she has going on. Despite the proximity to Vermilion City, Jane has not once left the island since her arrival one year ago. It could be that she's avoiding memories of her father, or that she's avoiding her mother who still teaches dance in Ecruteak.

Pokémon

Trista: Trista is rather old for a pokémon at 25 years of age. Her hobbies include lounging in the shade and telling off younger pokémon. At first she was very distressed by her change but has since come to enjoy her greater defense.

Looking back on the years she has few regrets, even when she caused trouble at the Dance School she knew it was for the best as Jane had rather poor coordination. There are times she misses her mother, but never Jane's who she saw as being unreasonable much of the time. She's never met any of her siblings and doesn't really think about where they might have ended up in life.

Since coming to Astrea, Trista has noticed Jane does a lot more traveling and is likely to catch another pokémon. She's not sure how she feels about sharing her lifelong partner with another pokémon. It would be nice to have a Psychic or Flying type at her side to counter-act Fighting types but she really would rather not share Jane...

Artwork

Stats for Jane: Jane has light maroon hair to her middle back, but tends to wear it up in a variety of ways. Her eyes are also light maroon and she tends to wear pink, white, and light maroon clothes. She's a towering 6 feet tall and carries a little extra weight around her middle. A common appearance for Jane is to be covered with leaves, sticks, and mud as she tends to take unnecessary risks in her research, landing her in a bit of trouble.

Stats for Trista (Eevee): Trista was a bit smaller tham most eevee and also a lot paler. Her markings were very calico-like, just very light. (Silver, cream, yellow.)

Stats for Trista (Armoeron): When Trista evolved, her colors did not change at all. She did get a bit bigger though.

Historical Journal Entries

The next few posts are meant to be things that happened in Jane's life before now. They are all very important to knowing who she is and where she comes from. I may add more as I come up with them.

A Mother Disapointed
Date: Fall 1984

"Bye, Jay-Jay, have fun with your mother!"

"Bye, Daddy!" Jane called back with an off-balanced twirl. "I'll be the best dancer ever!" Father and daughter continued to wave and call farewells while Jane's mother held her hand and guided her to the north of town. The pair stopped when they reached the three-way split between their home of Violet City, Ecruteak City, and Goldenrod City.

"Jane, dear, pay attention." Jane's mother had gotten a pokéball out from within her voluminous kimono, but it wasn't the beautifully decorated premier ball she kept her Espeon in. "Every Kimono Girl must have an eevee or one of it's evolutions. And the evolution depends on the girl, so every Kimono Girl-in-training has an eevee."

Jane gasped and fluttered her hands in front of her mouth with anticipation. "This eevee will be your lifetime companion. You will both have to work hard to become a Kimono Girl team. Are you ready, Jane?" Jane's mother's voice was stern, she was talking as a teacher now and a rather strict one at that. Seraphin Aurlin-Sycamore had a reputation as the sternest teacher the Kimono Dance School had ever had. But the school also had given some of its best performances while under her tutelage.

Jane folded her hands into her small kimono sleeves the way she'd seen her mother do and bowed. "I am ready to do my best to train me and my partner for Dance," she said.

"Good. Here." When Jane looked up her mother's smile was back, she was once more a proud parent and excited to see her daughter begin training at the school. There was nothing special about the pokéball Jane's mother passed to her waiting hands, but Jane knew she would treasure it always.

"Come!" she shouted while depressing the release on the pokéball.

"Eeeeeveeeee!" Jane took one look at the tricolored eevee before her and wanted to rush into her mother's arms, but she could see the young eevee was already antsy to explore her surroundings and might run off. So instead she reached into one of the inner pockets of her kimono to pull out a treat. As a soon-to-be student of the Kimono Dance School she had to be ready to learn dance as well as pokémon training. Her mother had given her some treats to start with, but she would eventually learn to make her own.

"Oh, mother! I thought you said all of Elysium's cubs were bought!" The eevee ate slowly from Jane's hands. She was small, only a few weeks old, and had a lovely coat of cream, pink, and gold. She was one of four cubs from a pairing of Seraphim's own espeon, Elysium, and a well-bred Vaporeon stud named Titus. Titus had blue and purple markings as befitting his shiny parentage and while the small eevee before was the only one in the litter without white markings she was still very stunning. Paller than most eevees and with pale markings similar to Elysium's.

"Well, without white markings she was harder to sell than the others anyway, and I knew you liked her so your father and I decided to hide her away until your birthday. Happy Birthday, Jane." While the tricolored eevee began washing herself Jane jumped up and gave her mother a hug. "Thank you, mother!"

-=-=---=-=-

It was many days later and the sun was low in the sky when mother and daughter returned from another day of dance school. Jane trailed a few steps behind with her face down and the bottom of her kimono still quite damp and various singes on the sleeves from whatever had happened that day. Beside her walked the tricolored eevee, Trista, looking both a little worse for wear but rather pleased with herself. Jane's father, Euclidius Sycamore, stood on the threshold of the door and knew better than to call a cheery greeting to such a down looking pair.

Jane realized she didn't want to hear her mother speaking to daddy about what happened, so just as her mother reached the porch, Jane scooped Trista into her arms, dashed ahead. "I'll be in my room!" she said, tears audible in her voice. She didn't stop when she reached the door and scooted around her father who only barely got out of the way. At the top of the stairs she almost slammed her door, but instead looked at it carefully before closing it silently. Slamming it would just prove her mother right.

In the safety of her own room, Jane hoped she wouldn't have to suffer through her mother's tirade against her, but it wasn't long before her mother's voice raised to an audible pitch from the floor below.

"...no care at all for others! And that eevee she's spoiled, I thought we taught her better than that!" Jane knew her father must be saying something now, but he never raised his voice to his wife so she couldn't hear it. A few minutes passed agonizingly slow before another eruption.

"It was an outright battle! In the middle of my class!" Once more Euclidius succeeded in lowering his wife's voice. Jane hugged Trista close to her. "Oh, Trista... why did you do it?"

Earlier that day during class, Jane had been struggling to hold her posture steady while balanced on one foot, but that wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Class had been going on for nearly two weeks and Jane was very far behind her classmates already while could not only balance longer than she could, but some of them could execute intricate movements with their arms while doing so.

Her mother never treated her any differently for being her daughter, and expected quite a bit more from Jane than she could give. No matter how hand she tried, everything Jane did came out sloppy and off-balance. She focused so much energy on improving her dance steps that she hardly took time to discipline Trista and usually let the eevee do what she wanted.

Jane and Trista's bond had grown quickly, Trista greatly enjoyed the freedom Jane gave her in comparison to the other dancers. Trista also felt very protective of Jane, so when older student Natsukera picked on Jane, Trusta usually reacted in violence.

"Looks like Jane's crashed and burned again," Natsukera twittered when Jane tumbled over to once side. Natsukera had been training for five years now and the only students better than her were many years older. Just recently she'd been given a water stone by her parents and her eevee Glimmer was now a sleek looking Vaporeon and quite proud of it.

Jane's mother made no reprimand to Natsu. It was Seraphim's belief that the inner workings of a peer group could motivate a child to do better. If Jane wanted the teasing to stop then she simply must try harder until there was nothing to tease.

Trista, however, had had enough to Natsukera's attitude. She ran across the class floor and bit her on the ankle. This caused Glimmer to respond with her newly learned Surf attack which soaked have the classroom! Two eevees and one flareon who were caught in the wave reacted by attacking both Glimmer and Trista with various attacks and it wasn't long before the whole room was in uproar.

Trista! Trista, come back! Stop!" Jane ran around the room, dodging pokémon attacks, while trying to grab Trista and calm her down.

Seraphim and the oldest of her students who often acted as her aide, Gloria, began using their Espeons to set up shields blocking pokémon from each other and projecting calming thoughts. They quickly had everything in hand, those pokémon they had been unsuccessful in calming they had wrapped so tight in shield they could hardly blink.

Seraphim said nothing to her daughter and dismissed class early. They had taken the long walk home in silence with Jane worried what her mother would do. She still very much wanted to learn to dance and make her mother happy.

"She's a disgrace to the Aurlin name!" Jane winced when she heard her mother shouting again. It certainly sounded like she was going to be kicked out of dance school.

She continued petting Trista. "I probably ought to punish you... but you were just defending me." Jane sighed. "You've got to learn, Trista. It doesn't matter what the other girls say. If I keep trying I'll get better and then they'll have nothing left to tease me about." Trista nuzzled Jane's hand. "I love you, too, Trista. But school is different. We have to be on our best behavior." Trista continued trying to comfort Jane, but the girl would have none of it. Trista! Aren't you listening?"

Jane picked her eevee up and set her at the foot of the bed. "Stay there and listen," she told a sorrowful-looking Trista. No more fighting in class. No more day dreaming by the window. And no more being lazy. I'm going to pick some attacks for you to learn so you can practice with me." So far Jane had focused only on her dancing, she knew if she divided her time between dancing and training that she'd probably never get better, but she knew no other way to fix this.

Unfortunately, Jane's coordination improved very little and Trista's behavior less so. After a year of classes Jane and her mother coldly agreed that it was hopeless.

The Fallen
Date: Spring 1993

"Burt, come quick!" Jane was covered in dirt from foot to waist as she knelt in a damp mound with a small garden trowel in one hand and a mesh sack in the other. She'd been clearing away weed growth in a small garden patch where her friend, Burt, was trying to coax certain trees to take root.

Burt's head popped up over a low wall, he'd been a few feet away tending some trees already fully grown and regularly producing various berries useful for pokémon battles. "What's up, Jane?" he asked, sounding hopeful.

Jane looked up and couldn't help giggling. "C'mon, Jane. Stop with the suspense already," Burt opened the gate to the small garden and came in, soon he was taken by Jane's infectious laughter until he forgot why he'd come in the first place.

When Jane had recovered enough, she explained, "Sorry, Burt. You've just got a huge lip-shaped glob of dirt on your cheek. It looks like a tree gave you a slobbery kiss!" She erupted into another fit of giggles while a red-faced Burt wiped his face in embarrassment.

"Not funny, Jane. You're just as dirty as I am!" he protested.

"Tree-kisser!" she proclaimed in a fit of giggles. The teasing was all in good fun, Burt had married Jane's aunt Lydia 11 years earlier and they'd always teased each other.

Burt was just about to shove Jane over, but then he noticed what she'd called him over for. "It's sprouted!"

Jane rubbed a bit of dirt from her nose, leaving behind a streak on her cheek. "Yeah, that's why I called you over." Both bent down over a small sprout. It was dark green with only two leaves and no visible buds yet, but it was still very young. "This one was the white apricorn." She waved a hand over the rest of the garden patch, "But none of the others have sprouted."

The failure of the other berries to take root was dimmed by the new growth in front of them. "That's alright, if this one flowers and produces apricorns then it'll be enough to start my research on how pokéballs probably were made in ancient times. This is marvelous!" Burt jumped up and scooped Jane into an excited twirl. "Your help's been great, Jane. Thank you!"

"Careful, Burt," Jane teased. "Your wife might get jealous." They both laughed, the only thing Lydia was jealous of was how much time her niece and her husband spent in the dirt with their plants instead of inside with her and little Kurt.

"Ooooh, maybe that's why she's coming outside now," Burt said, continuing the joke. But then the laughter left his eyes and he stopped spinning. Jane's back was to the house so she couldn't see the pained expression on Lydia's face but she did notice Burt's elation drop.

"What it is?"

Burt ran through the yard to his wife. "What is it, Lydia?" Jane followed feeling both confused and worried. Lydia fell into Burt's arms weeping. Jane could make very little out as Lydia sobbed against her husband.

"...just got the call...caught fire...six others...my brother, Burt. My brother!" Lydia's sobs took over and she stopped trying to speak, but Jane felt the ground sucked out from under her as a lance of loss, doubt, and fear ripped through her. Lydia was the younger of two children and she and her brother had always been very close.

"Daddy?" Jane's voice seemed to startle Lydia and then suddenly she was hugging Jane close.

"Oh, honey. I'm s-so sorry!" Although Lydia's grip was tight, it didn't stop Jane from falling to her knees in despair and shock. Lydia held tight, smoothing her niece's hair and trying to say soothing things, but there was nothing to be said. Everything blurred. At some point Burt must have gone inside, he wasn't outside anymore. She wondered where Kurt was and how he would react to loosing his uncle. Had it hurt? She still didn't know what happened, but Lydia had said fire... had the train caught fire? He'd only left for Johto by train that morning. He was to be home around dinner time.

When had she come inside?

Lydia was helping Jane into a chair while Burt laid a cup of tea in front of her, but she didn't want to drink it. She put her hands on the cup but didn't raise it. It would taste too good, Burt's tea always tasted good and nothing should be allowed to taste good anymore. Not without daddy.

"I've already called the school. Seraphim's on her way."

"I'll pack Jane's things, Seraphim... will probably want to take the girl home..."

Jane knocked the tea cup to the floor in her rush to stand. "NO!" Her aunt and uncle looked at her, confused. Jane's face flushed. "Couldn't I... couldn't I stay here?" she pleaded, tears finally coming to her face. She'd been too stunned to cry before, but the thought of going home without daddy was too much. "I don't want to go home!" Lydia had her arms around Jane once more, hushing her and assuring her she could stay the night. Lydia shared a worried glance with Burt though, they knew Seraphim wouldn't be happy about it.

An Overlooked Research Assistant
Date: Fall 2002

The applause around the pavilion was deafening and Juan, Hoenn's local celebrity, raised his hands for silence. He was here to preside over the chartering of Sootopolis despite having never been to the new city until yesterday when he arrived in a rather showy fashion. Banners decorated the whole city with Juan's smiling face at the center with "Sootopolis" written in watery-looking letters above it. But not everyone was happy. Down at the docks a young research assistant was quarreling with a dock man who was just about to loose his temper.

- Jane wants to leave but there's no one working (except the dock man who wants to leave to watch the celebration)

- Jane offers to pilot a sub herself, dock man is unsure she knows how to pilot one because of her age

- Jane throws a fit since she's the one who logged the most sub hours while charting the caves around Sootopolis

- another research assistant shows up, a friend of Jane's and older than her

- he's much better at talking to people and convinces the dock man that he'll see Jane safely where she's going

- dock man agrees and leaves, researcher friend gives Jane the keys and makes her promise to send the sub back on autopilot
