Jane had spent too much time recently at the lab and so Trista decided to do some exploring herself of the surrounding area. She'd gone off alone before, but that was Sinnoh and she'd known her way around much better there. She started east from the lab, having seen a snow-topped mountain in the distance. Jane talked about the three mountains often, she seemed to think there was something significant about them.

It was now around midday and Trista was as the foot of the large mountain, it was much bigger in person. She hadn't decided yet if she should try going up it at all, it looked rough and rocky. She wasn't worried about getting hurt, but she was a bit worried about getting lost. The mountain's surface had many deep chasms and paths. It probably had a cave system too, but she'd have to investigate some of the dark shadows on the mountain to know that. For now it was probably best to take a break. So Trista found a nice shady spot under a rather short tree, many of the trees this close to the mountain were short, and rested her paws.

((Heh. Did you mean "chance" in the title? XD And, I feel it helps other people who might read this to post images of the pets in the beginning posts of the RP.))

Among the rough and rocky base of Mount Freeze, a sudden beam of icy energy ripped through the air. A somewhat differently colored Glaceon leapt from boulder to boulder, firing Ice Beams at a wild Meleeon. With a happy bark, the diamond-marked Ice-type landed a hit and the unfortunate Fighting-type was frozen solid. The huge glittering slab of ice was left to melt in the sun as the Glaceon bounded back to its Trainer, a very young girl with ribbons in her hair.

"Great job, Dia! Your Ice Beam's getting way stronger!" the girl proclaimed as she scratched her Glaceon between the ears, "And with strength comes beauty!" The girl nodded in agreeance with herself and glanced down at her Poketch before adding, "Well, it's been a long day, and I think we did some great work. Go have fun for a little while." With a happy, "Glace!" and a wag of its tail, the Glaceon blew its Trainer a tiny snowflake kiss and bounded away.

Heading further down the mountain, Dia spotted some trees as the forest and grasslands came into view. More towards the bottom, short trees were growing between boulders, looking as though they were pushing through the mountain itself.

Sitting beneath such a small tree was what looked like a very shiny creature, the Glaceon noticed. It headed towards the tree on soft paws, careful to make very little sound. As it approached, it realized that the shiny thing was a very uniquely colored Armoreon. After a moment of observance, Dia took a deep breath, squared her paws, and yelled, "HEY!"

((I didn't want to post her image until her name was right on the cert.))

There was just enough sunlight filtering through the trees for Trista to soak up and keep warm despite the cool breezes blowing down from the mountain. The temperature was perfect for a nap and Trista was just starting to drift off when...

"Ah!" Trista's fur stood on end, her eyes got big, and she looked around for the source of her distress. Her fur settled when she saw a Glaceon in the distance. Should the ice type attack, she could rely on her own alignment to give her a measure of protection. But this wasn't likely given how far away they were from each other.

Fully recovered, Trista shot back an equally exuberent "Hey!" with a crooked grin on her face. The Glaceon had to be young to be so full of pep and vigor, and she was sure to chastise her for disturbing an old one's rest but ony in good fun. (Trista is 25 years old.)

Bursting with giggles at the Armoreon's reaction, the Glaceon was forced to wait a few moments before regaining enough breath to talk.

"Hehehe.... Hi there! Hehe... I'm sorry if I .... hehehe.... disturbed you, but it was ..... pfftt..... funny!" the Ice-type tried to explain. Judging by the voice, the Glaceon was female. She had a voice that was soft and yet hard. It reminded one of deep snow that hid strikingly solid ice beneath.

Finally regaining her composure, Dia walked over to the Steel-type Pokemon and extended a turquoise paw. "Um, let's try this again," she said warmly, "I'm called Dia."

((Is it easier if I bold spoken words?))

((It's just how I like to do things. If you like doing it, then do it. wink I'll be fine reading it either way.))

The way the Glaceon offered her paw reminded Trista of canine breeds taught to do tricks. Fortunately it was a trick she'd learned over time as those who spent time with humans tended to adopt human habits. She returned her own pale hued paw in kind.

"Trista. A pleasure, Dia." Trista's voice had a calm, melodious quality with a just a hint of her advanced age. "And since we start from the beginning, I suppose I need not trouble myself teaching you manners," she said with a wink and a chuckle to show she meant it only in fun.

"So, Dia, what brings you to this frosty-peeked mountain?" she asked.

((Heh. I ordinarily bold spoken word in RPs, but sometimes it annoys people, so I try to ask first. XP))

Dia grinned and hopped back to turn her green gaze to the mountain. She eyed the white peak and then looked back at Trista, saying, "Nice to meet you, Trista!"

Suddenly, the space around the Glaceon got arctic-cold and the moisture in the air became glittering diamond dust. Doing a quick back-flip through the dust, icy particles stuck to her fur, causing her to glitter in the sunlight as she took a final pose.

"My trainer's a Coordinator, and we were practicing my Ice Beam on the local Meleeons. The stronger it gets, the more I'll impress the judges at our next contest!" Dia exclaimed excitedly, her diamond-ended tail wagging slightly in joy.

After a breath of keeping the pose, Dia then chuckled and relaxed into a casual stance, the air returning to its regular degrees before she asked curiously, "So why were you sleeping here? Is your trainer near by or something?"

"Brava! Very impressive." Trista bowed her head in acknowledgment of Dia's accomplishment. "Perhaps I'll come watch someday. I've not been to a contest like that before." She could understand Jane's lack of enthusiasm in that area. It was just too close to home.

"Jane's back at the large buildings, that way," Trista told her, gesturing with a jerk of her head back toward Eon Labs. "A research facility. Do you know it?" She thought it possible Dia had been by that way before, perhaps even on her way to the mountain.

Dia nodded earnestly, her opposite-colored ears flopping slightly in her joy, "Yeah! You should! Contests are the best!" She grinned, thinking back to her last contest. The lights, the excitement, the opposing Pokemon, the beauty, the adrenaline - she wouldn't give it up for anything in the world. Perhaps she was simply born to perform, as Ribbon put it.

At Trista's talk of the Labs, the Glaceon said with a giggle, "Yeah I know the Labs! I was born there!" She flashed a cheeky smile at the Armoreon before adding, "Is your Jane a scientist?"

((Woo-ho, I have Trista's proper cert. I'll add it to the first post when I get the chance...))

Trista wondered if that made Dia very young, indeed. It seemed from Jane that the lab was fairly new, maybe a few years. But then, sometimes Trista had a hard time judging the passage of time. "Yes she is, and quite accomplished, I might add." Trista was very proud of her Jane. "She's been to many regions, studying the interaction of weather, plant life, and terrain of the effects of pokémon migration and habits. I feel privileged to have seen so much of the world while traveling with her. And to have had so many adventures," she added.

Trista sighed, thinking on many fond experiences. She counted herself lucky not to have been sold like her siblings.

Dia nodded at Trista's explanation of her trainer before tilting her head to the side cutely and saying, "Wow. That seems like a lot of work! Why doesn't she get a Psychic Pokemon and just ask other Pokemon?" Dia couldn't really understand why others made everything so complicated. It seemed much easier to just ask questions to get answers, rather than spending years researching....

Shaking off her wandering thoughts, she asked, "You traveled a lot? Where have you been?"

While Dia's suggestion seemed a good one, even if Jane had thought of that she would likely have been less willing to do it after her own encounters with Trista's mother, an Espeon named Elysium who had since passed on into whatever afterlife awaited pokémon.

"Well, I'm originally from Violet City in Johto. That's where Jane and I grew up, but after... well, after a while, we went to Hoenn and Jane spent a lot of time studying the water currents of the island to the south and east. She even helped found a city there." Though that was an event Jane remembered with much bitterness.

"Most recently we were in the Sinnoh region, which has a massive system of caves within a very long and tall mountain chain. While there she concerned herself with legends and finding what truths might have led to them. There were three interesting lakes, but we were able to learn more about the mountains." Trista shrugged. "There's something strange about those lakes though... I think Jane mentioned another research group was close to an answer right about the time we left there and came here."

"Here is where Jane's doing research like nothing she's ever done before. She wants to know more about pokémon evolution." Again, she shrugged. "I don't always understand her research, but I'm curious to know more too. I was still an Eevee about a year ago and still don't know exactly what happened during that cave in..." Trista's brow furrowed as she recalled the event. "...I never noticed anything... but when I came out, Jane could barely recognize me!"

Trista seemed to suddenly realize how long she'd been talking. "Oh! I don't mean to bore you." Her voice took a sarcastic tone. "I guess it's just the fate of the old to natter on about trivial things," she said with a chuckle.

Dia chuckled at the end of the tale and replied, "No biggie! Sometimes, the opposing Pokemon in a Contest wants to tell you his entire life story, as if he thinks you'll let him win or something. But yeah. I'm a good listener!"

She flashed a silly grin at Trista and then nodded. "It sounds like you've been all over the place! I've really only been to Verdanturf Town, Fallarbor Town, and Slateport City in Hoenn. We're due to head to Lilycove City for the Master Rank Contest, but I haven't been there yet. Ribbon has been all around Hoenn and Sinnoh before me though, so I haven't traveled much compared to her or you."

The Ice-type gave another smile and suddenly asked, "So .... if your trainer is a scientist, does that mean you don't battle very much?"

Trista wondered for a moment if any contests took place here on the island. It didn't look like they'd be leaving any time soon. After all these years, Trista and Jane might have a close rapport, but she couldn't relay something as specific as "Hey! I wanna see a contest!"

"Sounds a blast," she said sarcastically about Dia's fellow contestants. "I suppose I don't battle as often as a trainer's pokémon might, but it's been so long that I feel ready to face most things." She nodded with a thoughtful look on her face. "Jane's been to some pretty rough places, and she's never shown any inclination to own other pokémon. It's usually up to our combined wit to reach new areas for research."

"What about you?" she asked. All Trista had to compare contests with was her short time at the Dance School in Johto. "Do all contest pokémon spend extra time training, or does it give you an edge?"
PostPosted: Fri Sep 25, 2009 6:43 am

Dia nodded and whistled in an impressed fashion. "Wow! You're her only Pokemon? You must be really tough! How do you do up against .... um.... Fire-types? Or Fighting-types? Isn't it hard to overcome your natural weaknesses?"

Dia had seen trainers who favored one Pokemon, but they always kept others in case they were needed. To only train a single Pokemon meant that that one Pokemon would need to be almost unbeatable, since when trainers lost battles, they also had to give half of the money they were carrying away to the winner. Then again, if that single Pokemon was only used to defend against wild Pokemon, it wouldn't have to be quite so strong. Perhaps that was a bit more realistic.

At the contest question, Dia's green eyes lit up and she spoke excitedly, "Well, you're certainly not going to learn new moves if you don't train! And any true contest Pokemon trains beyond simply learning the technique - we train to master the move. The better the move looks and the stronger it is, the more we can impress the judges and, hopefully, the better we score. Also, we need to be strong for the battle portion of the contest. If you can't win the match, you're certainly not getting the ribbon."

"Of course, some contests don't have battles. Some have different things - like a dance portion. For that, you need to have quick reflexes, grace, and stamina. After all, the leader of the dance is going to do everything in their power to trip you up so that they look better."

"So training is very important for contests - maybe even more so than regular battles because we have to always remain stylish. Though, I think Ribbon trains a bit more than the average Coordinator, since I haven't lost a contest yet!"

"Well, fighting types have always been a hassle, I've spent most of my life as an Eevee," she said offhandedly. "And no, I'd say I'm about average strength... Jane's very good at being sneaky and carries a lot of diversionary items in case we get in over our head. Little toys, and smoke bombs, and the like," she explained.

Trista recalled more than a few times where she and Jane escaped by the skin of their teeth. Sometimes Trista wouldn't know how things went until she woke up in a PokéCenter. She always loved when Jane would tell her all about whatever happened after she'd been knocked out. There'd been that time a trainer didn't believe Jane was a professor and chased her for three hours trying to get her prize money! Or the time they'd fallen through a loose tunnel ceiling into a Geodude den. Somehow, Jane always managed to pull through - with or without Trista's help.

"Sounds like an exciting and varied life," Trista commented. The dancing sounded about right, seemed dancers liked nothing better than to show others up. Just thinking about it got her so mad! When Dia stopped talking it took Trista a moment to recover and school her features to a more relaxed look. "Well, congratulations! Does Ribbon train any other pokémon for contests?"
