Quest: Gone Fishing

Fadorra was smiling brightly, as usual, on her way to go fishing. She had been looking over the message board to find something she could do, and fishing had been there. Fishing would be fun, and pretty good exercise for the girl. Dorra had noticed herself getting a bit chubby around the gills, and that simply would not do. She was starting to realize why her parents had tried to keep her appetite and activity levels in check. Fighting was good for her, but without being able to find anyone to practice with today, she had to do something, or she’d get fat! And everyone knows that a fat fishy can’t dance! And the purple girl so very much wanted to dance and sing.

There were two options she had for what to do for fishing-buy a pole and do it the normal way, or go swimming and catch them her usual way. The former would end up with Dorra falling asleep, she was sure, and that’d end her up with a sunburnt belly-and as her back was still a bit sore, she had to sleep on said belly, so it simply could not get burnt! The latter, on the other hand, was a perfect option-she’d get in her swimming exercise, and be able to play around during the fishing. It’d also be a chance for her to break her habit of eating all the fishies she brought home.

The walk was pleasant and leisurely-the Sooeteu wanted to conserve energy for her swimming. Anyway, there was no need to rush there, or she’d just get hungry and start eating any fish she caught. That’d be counterproductive-not that Dorra knew that word. She knew really-really-against-what-I’m-doing but that’s not really a word. Her walk was at just the right pace, that it also caused her to mentally drift off, rather than thinking too much and overusing made-up adjectives. Her mind seemed to follow the behavior of her body-if she was bouncy and being active, her mind was rampant and hard to catch like her body, but if she was calm, moving in a relaxed manner, her mind seemed to slow, stop being so wild, and started to make a bit more sense.

When the lake was reached, Fadorra’s calm mindset was erased, as her body bounded forward, running up the side of a pointed rock and diving into the water, that hit her like a cold wakeup call, forcing her eyes open and her mind to reaffirm itself. She needed to be neither asleep nor hyper right then. It was like the water’s feel, after not swimming in so long, had reminded her of what was important, what she wanted.

Breaking the surface with her head to catch some more air completed what the water had started-shaking Dorra’s brain on task. With her skin wet, the air attracted was cold, and as she was breathing in deeply, it caused her to take in lungfuls of cold, clear air. She wasn’t here to play or be hyper, nor was she here to be dreamy and tired. This was to be exercise, and a mission, in a sense.

“Time to catch some fish!” she told herself, in a stern tone that startled the girl as she’d never used it before. With a sudden burst of determination, Fadorra set to her task. Swimming to and fro, grabbing fish whenever she could, and putting them upon the bank. She’d brought one of her bedsheets on this mission-she’d wash it herself when she got back-and was placing all of the fish upon it so that they could later be tied up and carried back on the end of her pointy stick. The sheet had been folded up, half hanging from her belt pouch all the way there. Now it was spread out a ways away from the bank, so that the fish Dorra brought up-several in each hand-would be able to rest on it.

After the passage of some time-Dorra could never be sure how long it was, too concerned with getting a good catch-the girl had a decent ammount of fish tied up in the sheet, and was heading home, whistling a tune, to keep her mind-and her mouth-off of wanting to eat some of the fish. She’d have dinner when it was served, and that’s it. That’d be the only way she’d be able to maintain any sort of decent figure. Anyway, she didn’t want to get any fish-bits on her clothes. Fish juice and water were enough to have to clean off of an outfit and a sheet, she didn’t need guts too.

When she’d dropped off the fish with the Cook, Fadorra took the sheet back into the dorms and set to washing it and her dress, quietly, all by herself, before heading up to bed. It’d been a long day, and Fadorra needed her rest. At least she was productive! She’d have to tell her new friend about that. What WAS her name again? Something that ended in “ri” wasn’t it? Oh well! Dorra’d just have to call the girl ‘Ri, till she remembered it or got told otherwise! But still, she was sooooooo going to tell her new friend about her adventures! Soon as she….woke…up…..

Errands for Lamya (1)

Fadorra stared around the Blacksmith’s shop. Her time awake before that was a bit of a blur of busy people and a rather distracted Meecio shopkeeper who’d needed her to go pick some fishing hooks up. Dorra’d had to go pick up a dagger prior to this anyway, so she at least knew where the shop was and knew what the owner looked like. She’d also noticed that he didn’t like to talk, and didn’t appriciate her humor. Hanging by herself at the Training Grounds had sobered the Sooeteu up at least a little.

Entering the shop, she steeled herself on the resolve that she was not going to aggravate the Kaillad Blacksmith this time, and she was going to just do her business and get the hell out of there, as that was probably all he really wanted-to be left the hell alone.

He was behind the counter at the moment, and that was a good place for him to be. Fadorra had no idea what she would have done left in a shop, picking something up without an adult who knew where things were for supervision. “Excuse me, but I was sent to pick up some fishing hooks for Lamya?” she asked, hoping he’d just be able to give her the hooks and let her be on her way. It wasn’t that the Kaillad was intimidating, as much as she just really didn’t want to annoy him, finding that keeping on good terms with everyone was a better plan than just going about doing things the way she previously did.

Receiving the package, the girl nodded and said thanks to the Blacksmith and went on her way to deliver it. The purple girl had a bit to wait, as Lamya was still a bit busy, but when she did get a chance, she handed over the fishing hooks and wandered back towards the message board to see what she could do. Maybe she’d go track down Singh before her next quest. Either way, still a good idea to look.

Quest: Punishment

Fadorra smiled pleasantly at the housekeeper. She was there to report for a punishment. The girl had broken some vase or another in her wild, unmonitered prancings-she’d taken a liking to such things lately-and was now facing the consequences of her actions. Doing everyone else’s chores wouldn’t be so bad, she thought, bouncing a bit on her heels. It wasn’t like she had to stand out in the hot sun lugging things around or fighting. She could dance and prance as much as she liked so long as she got the work done and didn’t break anything else. This would help her practice her dancing-and her being careful. This would be a liveable task, but it wasn’t one she wanted to do more than once if she could avoid it. Punishment for one mistake was enough to learn a lesson, but Dorra disliked getting in trouble.

“What are you so cheerful about?” the woman barked at her. It was unusual to have someone on such a punishment who wasn’t grumbling. Mind, the last one she’d had do this was a grumpy Kaillad who would rather be out fighting rather than a way-too-optimistic Sooeteu.

“Being alive? Being allowed to make up for mistake rather than getting kicked out of this place? Having my sunburn feeling better? Tons of reasons!” the purple girl informed the older woman in a cheerful but respectful tone. “What do you want me to do, ma’am?”

“You’ll be sweeping up around here first, and mopping after that. Things have gotten dirtier since I last had someone clean, and this place needs to be dealt with.” She ordered, trying not to let the way Dorra’s utterly perplexing behavior was getting to her show.

“Okie dokie!” the Sooeteu said, grinning broadly and bounding off to get her supplies-careful not to knock anything over on her way.

A short while later, whilst humming a pleasant tune, the girl was spinning around the room, the broom as her dancing partner. Each step, each sweep, was done with a power that could be expressed through faster steps, faster strokes.

Sweep, sweep, sweepsweepsweep, sweep, sweep, sweepsweepsweep

A beat she’d made herself-two regular strokes, and then three quick ones in succession, moving in a manner to sweep all of the dirt in the room into a neat pile, a fancy procession around the room. Jumping and skipping here and there to make the movements more fun, more enjoyable, Dorra had the task done in a reasonable amount of time, without much complaint or annoyance.

Mopping was even more fun, a different kind of dance. Slow and graceful, her feet slid neatly upon the newly slicked floors. Soft spins, controlled and yet loose, flowing. She watched where she spun, and how, making sure nothing was knocked from its place when she did such things. It took a few tries, and the Sooeteu had several times to jump quickly so as to balance something. She’d slipped once or twice in this, hitting her head, but managing to keep whatever it was intact. The more she tried, the more she failed, the better she got at it. Her failures decreased as her skill at this spinning increased. She was sad to see the task done so soon-to her mind.

The girl’s shoulders and legs were a little sore, her body somewhat weary, out of breath. Still, there was way more work to be done, way more she was to help with. She’d half scared the Housekeeper when the woman saw that she was still a little bouncy-far less than before, but still-and cheerful even after having worked for a little. Laundry was next, a task welcomed for its requiring less moving around, though more effort in the cleaning of.

Laundry was an in between task-Fadorra did have to move around more than she’d thought, carrying things to and fro, but it required more standing still and working her upper torso than the mopping had, so it was a medium between her next and last tasks. The completion of the laundering had calmed the purple female’s over-excitement but not her cheerfulness and willingness to work to the best of her ability. When told she was to go wash dishes, the only indication that her body was tiring at all was a slightly lessened spring in the girl’s step, and the slightly less enthusiastic smile.

Washing was what some would deem a boring task. She worked slowly, gently, humming a quiet, slow melody to herself. Her body-muscles she’d never known existed aching-was quite glad for this task. She could work at an even pace, her cleaning more thorough than it ever would if she weren’t tired. Taking her time, making sure every dish was carefully handled and completely clean before it was placed up, it was good that Sooeteu couldn’t prune to her knowledge, or her arms would be quite wrinkly by now.

Unlike with Tahrin, the Housekeeper had way fewer complaints about Fadorra’s work on the dishes. The girl had been careful and neat as possible with them, and it had paid off. It’d also been enough of a rest that cleaning the bathrooms wasn’t as bad as it would have been directly after the laundry. The girls’ rooms were not as filthy as the boys’ had been, but still, they were in need of a good cleaning. It was hard work, but Fadorra did it silently, moving in a less dancelike manner, than before, just trying to complete the task properly.

She didn’t even bother asking what-if anything-she should do next. Had she, the girl would have been told she was done for the day-but in her half tired, having-been-cleaning-too-long mindset, the windows were bothering her quite a bit. Their state of shabbiness caused the girl to make up her own bucket of soapy water, and head around to make those dusty pieces of glass shine as best they could. Windows should be like water, she thought, clear, cool, and lovely. So it was the water, diluted with soap, and wielded with a soft sponge, that she used to make the windows the way they should be.

It wasn’t until she decided thing in the dorms needed polishing, and went where some might be found, that the girl got told she was finished for the day. That was good news, as otherwise Fadorra would have just kept working until she collapsed, and had she been cleaning a vase or something at the time, she’d probably have broken it. Wearily, and, in a sense, proudly, Fadorra wandered off to quickly splash some water on her face and collapse into bed.
