This is a journal for Perri Indiya to use as she coaxes her Fenthry out of its feather and has lots of fun adventures with it.

Please don't post here unless Perri has given you permission!

Nishan
The feather suddenly leaps away from Perri's grasp, floating through the air in a feeble attempt to reach the ceiling. It seems, though, that the feather hasn't the energy to fly upward, and instead floats serenely toward the floor. A few inches above the groun, the feather erupts in a blinding flash of magical light...and a four-inch tall child is left sitting in the middle of a tiny scorch mark on the floor. The rings on his wings almost look like the eye spots on a moth, and his dark coloration would be perfect for camouflage against the trees.

July 1st ~ A feather comes home

I had promised Rene that no one else ws going to come home. I lied. Well, since I'm working on the dig at the moment and not living at home, I haven't completely lied yet. I couldn't help myself! They're just so wonderful! And I'm sure Nishan will be too. But I was planning on writing about what I've obsered of the feather, not my goofy plans.

There is something different about this feather - which of course goes without saying, but still. I think the lack of stasis has unlocked his life force somewhat. There is a life here, clear and easy to sense when I just focus. It has my friends and ghost (Of a Celtic goddess. Don't ask.) all excited, as they can sense it too. A few of my friends, namely Mahii, Yeu, and Shiaree, already have fenthry children, and after meeting them I am even more excited. I have been on edge for these few hours I've had this precious thing, bouncy and jittery. Bah, I'm too excited to write sensibly. I will try again another day.
July 3rd ~ Eyespots not Speckles

I love Nishan's eyespot. That would be the bullseye design on the end of the feather. In nature, such patterns are worn by birds, fish, and insects, typically as a device to confuse or scare off predators. One of the few birds who uses it in a different manner is the male peacock, who as you probably know has a brilliant eyespot design on the end of his tail feathers to help attract a mate. Which shall Nishan's be? Heh, probably for date luring.

From what I have learned from the general Fenthry info available to feather keepers, Nishan's pale coloring will lend him to a more passive personality, and I have to admit I could not be happier. I love all my boisterous, brash pets and family I share my house with, but a calmer one will be a nice change. His colors are lovely, all cool grayish hues. Heh, his feather's markings kind of remind me of a chinchilla. Maybe he'll be soft and fuzzy?
July 6th ~ A Fenthry is Born

I thought I had dropped my feather, and that Nishan was going to be hurt! I was reaching to pick the feather up off of its shelf when it leaped through my fingers and sailed towards the floor. I dove to catch it, and was blinded by a quick flash of light. When I could see again, a tiny, grey boy with eyespots on his wings snuggled in my hands. Nishan smiled shyly at me, and promptly went to sleep. I soon found he was a very good sleeper.

Nishan is tiny like all fenthry are tiny, but even then he is small for a male. At a bit under four inches in height, we are currently kindred spirits in our small stature. There is of course the potential for him to grow as he ages, but for now he is a little thing. Well, I mean, compared to me he'll always be a little thing- right, I'll stop.

But my, did Nishan's change from feather to creature go fast! I don't think I even had time to take a picture of the little one in feather form. Not that I mind, of course. He is a sweet boy, and I am very lucky to have gotten him. He is perfectly happy to sit and watch the world go by from any perch I place him on, be it my head, shoulder, or pocket. My head is his favorite place, the horns and hair giving him hand-holds and hiding places. He is a shy, shrinking thing and so the hiding is very dear to him. I shall have to be careful of that - while he labled me protector I may still end up proving to loud and scary if I do not watch myself. The last thing I want to do is alienate my Nishan!
July 8th ~ First Impressions

Nishan is a quiet thing as I have said, to the point that he has yet to speak even his first word. It is not that he can't, I think, just that he has chosen not to. He is very expressive in other ways, just not verbally. He is quick to let me know what he wants through a rudimentary sign language he has created, although even that is little used because his needs are so few. Fenthry do not eat much, and he eats littler still. I worry over this, but he shrinks from my doting and I have learned to leave him in peace. He is not hungry and not ill from lack of sustinence, so he may go his own way. He spends most of his time either sleeping or watching me and my world from a safe vantage point. I plan to take him to interact with his own kind soon, and we will see how that goes. I am hoping for at least a "tolerable" rating.

The one thing he has so far embraced is drawing. He loves it, and is rather good in my inexperienced and loving view. He picked it up from watching Ivy, a very artistic friend of mine, ply his trade. Nishan was so fascinated, he begged to investigate the pencil Ivy was using, so he could discover how pictures came out of it. Ivy was kind enough to let my little one borrow a small piece of charcoal and a scrap of paper, and he had a grand time with it. He spent almost two hours sitting on my desk top covering the paper and himself with charcoal smudges. When he was done, he presented me proudly with the result, signing that it was a picture of me. I couldn't really tell, but it was his first try after all.

He learns very fast. Refusing to spend any more time with Ivy to learn drawing techniques, Nishan has decided to teach himself through deep concentration and trial-and-error. He draws the things that lie around my tent for practice, and the rest of the outside world for a challenge. Living up to the fenthry reputation for quick study, he has progressed far in two days, now quickly able to draw recognizable and interesting pieces from observation. He continues to use charcoal and basic paper, although I have since bought him his own charcoal set and drawing notebook. He also continues to cover himself in charcoal every time he draws. I am very glad he doesn't mind baths.
July 18th ~ Thank Heaven for Little Girls

Thanks to Prox's and Mahii's little ladies, Nishan has said his first words! Nothing like the influence of bouncy attractive others to get a person moving. He's still his shy, reserved, artistic self, but he has come out of his shell for a whole five minutes. He even drew little sketches (and incredibly quick ones) for each of the girls! It was so cute. And then he got startled and fell off my shoulder, but it was a start! I don't take him out to meet other fenthry enough, so I guess it's understandable that he's so quiet, but we spend lots of time interacting with him at home...it's probably to busy for him. Poor dear.
