Who are the Lost Children?
- When the Fa'e first came into life, they knew little of the magic that brought
them here. During the last three years of Fa'e existence it has become apparent that the source of all Fa'e is Airi, a child-like recluse dwelling within the gardens of Fa'e HQ. Out of her own blood and with the help of a mysterious object
referred to as The Talisman she has been calling dead souls back into a second existence. At first she was assisted in this task by her own Guardian, Anya, who located the shadows of the called souls and used Airi's magic to bring the Fa'e into their new life. As every Fa'e must be bound to a Guardian soul in order to survive and grow, Anya then found the Guardian for whom the Fa'e was meant, based both on Airi's instructions and her own intuition. For both Airi and Anya the entire process of creating and finding Fa'e was a bit of trial and error, and at first Anya had to travel to far away worlds and dimensions to locate the fledgling Fa'e souls, leaving them on doorsteps of would be Guardians with often only the briefest of a n explanation. Little by little Airi realized how to call Fa'e souls specifically to Gaia and the task became simpler. But there are still Fa'e living in the infinite worlds out there who know very little of what they are and what they might become. They are the Lost Children and this contest's goal is to find THREE of them among the many dreams that you all dream.
OVERVIEW
This contest is for three Lost Children slots of the Fa'e HQ thread. Since this contest is for a Lost Child Fa'e, there are both additional writing requirements and character restrictions. The Lost Child Fa'e will be found as a teen, and the stages drawn by Anya will be: teen, youth, adult, elder and ancient (if applicable). You are welcome to acquire your own fanart of the baby/toddler/kid stages as well as roleplay flashbacks, but current character interactions will be as a teen or older. That said, the Lost Child fa'e is still able to become an Ancient or have children themselves, just like the normal Fa'e are. Also, since Lost Children already had a childhood and a Guardian somewhere on a far away world, the please include into your writing sample information on both their Guardian's personality and the world that they lived in. It can be as elaborate or concise as you feel is necessary.
As Fa'e are RP heavy pets, we have tried to find a way to test the applicant's ability to maintain an interesting RP session. For that purpose we have decided to divide the contest into two phases. During the first phase, the application forms are submitted together with the writing samples. Upon receiving of all of the entries, we the judges will decide upon 15 finalist who will enter the second phase of the contest. The finalists will be randomly divided into five groups of three and given an RP situation. Each finalist will get to react five times and the RPs will then be judged by us. Since we have never done such a contest setup before, it is likely that a number of kinks will have to be ironed out before the second phase will begin. Please look here again for more information as we develop this idea.
CONTEST TIME LINE

THESE RULES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE AND AMENDMENT IF THE SITUATION WILL REQUIRE IT.
Please, please be nice to each other! Future Lost Children contests will only happen if this one goes well
This contest will be judged by Anya! XD, Sosiqui, Arrien, Cerena and Kalindara, with the final word reserved for Anya! XD, since she has to draw them in the end.
You have until JANUARY 10th to get your Application Forms in (see Phase One post). The contest will have two phases and after the submission deadline we will select 15 finalists and assign them randomly into groups of three for an RP challenge. This second phase of the contest will be completed by FEBRUARY 1st, with the final results announced on FEBRUARY 5th.
There is an entry fee: 2,000 gold. BUT if people have pre-existing quest threads that have been stamped for approval before the 1st of January, then they can pay 1,000 gold. Just a little bonus for the questers that have been dedicated and actually submitted their quests to be looked over and worked hard. Please send the trade to the FAE CONTEST STAFF account.
Yes, you can still submit your form if you do not have a quest thread or have gotten the Fa'e stamp of approval, but it is your responsibility to keep within the Fa'e rules listed in the Fa'e Questers Guild.
There is NO WORD LIMIT this time, as our judges would rather see you get creative then try to squeeze into the 1000 word format. However, to save our judges' sanities, we want to ask you to be concise.
There are no edits allowed once you've turned your entry in - once it's in, that's it, you can't change it or edit it any further! So make sure it's perfect before you send it in.
This is not a custom Fa'e. The appearance of your Fa'e will be based on the legend. Please chose three main things that identify your Fa'e. This includes eye/hair/skin color. So, when describing their appearance, be sure that you chose only three things that you really cannot part with.
This contest is for a Lost Child, meaning your Fa'e wil be a teen when you get it. You will not receive the baby/toddler/kid stage art, though you are of course welcome to get fanarts if you win. The Lost Children are still eligible to have kids on their own and become Ancients and so forth, just like all other fa'e.
In this contest, a Fa'e concept can be based on the following: mythological characters (such as heroes, gods, demons, etc.), as well as places, creatures and objects. For more details, see here: Fa'e Questers Guild. Make sure you have a link to a website somewhere that refers to the actual legend. Also, make sure that the thing you are basing your Fa'e off is dead/has been destroyed (thus can be brought back as a Fa'e). Please refrain from basing your Fa'e idea on an original character of yours, as well as giving it multiple personalities/incarnae unless it's unquestionably supported by your background myth.
If you send your entry to the wrong account (i.e one of the judges or the FAE HQ account) then your entry will be disqualified. Send your entry and trades to 'Fae Contest Staff', please!
Most importantly, please, PLEASE, BE NICE! If we see any cruelty, or rudeness, within this thread, your entry will be disqualified.

Please fill out the Application Form below and PM it to the FAE CONTEST STAFF mule. Please be sure to spell check and submit completed applications, as you will not be able to revise them once you sent them in. If you send the Application Form to any other account but the FAE CONTEST STAFF, it will not be reviewed. There is no word limit, but please refrain from submitting a novel, it should at least fit into on PM message.

How does the characters personality, appearance and powers and your character relate back to your chosen mythos?
History: (Include, in BRIEF, an idea of their past life and their mythos.)

World: ( Include some information about the world into which they had been reborn off-Gaia.)
Writing samples: (See prompts)
WRITING PROMPTS
(Please choose ONE of these topics to show of your writing skills)
Prompt#1: It was obvious from the moment you discovered a seemingly abandoned baby on your doorstep that the child was far from ordinary -- and unfortunately, this is something that'll be difficult to keep from the rest of the world. What do the other members of your community (whether they be neighbors, other villagers, the people at the daycare you leave your child at) think of and how will they react to your Fa'e child, probably knowing as little about his or her origins as you do?
Prompt #2: Your Fa'e child has been growing, and strange things begin to happen from time to time around it. Talk about your Fa'e odd manifestation of powers as a child/teen in their world - how do they deal with having powers and with being different from the rest of the children? What the results of the power manifestation and how does it affects them and the world around them?
Prompt #3: One dark and stormy night a figure wrapped in a dark cloak approaches you. It is Airi, who has traveled from Gaia to find your Fa'e and take it back with her to Fa'e HQ. What are your Fae's reaction to this and do they want to go with her? Also, what does the Guardian think about it, as he/she will now have to abandon their world to come with the Fa'e child? Feel free to NPC Airi or just describe interactions after Airi has left you two alone.
Cerena
SAMPLE APPLICATION FORM
- Name: Lethe Honeyrose Absinthe Sunshine Butterglitter
Gender: Female
Mythbase: The Lethe, the Greek Underworld River of Emo
Link to a source on the mythbase: Wikipedia Article
Link to Fa'e quest thread: N/A
Appearance: Blue polkadots over her skin, BEAUTIFUL LONG EYELASHES, and paler than a vampire
Powers: Emo: She can make people emo.
Emo Music: She is able to identify any emo song within the first three seconds of hearing it by title, artist, date released, and whether or not popular opinion has decided they suck.
Personality: she is dark and mysterious, ok, DARK AND MYSTERIOUS
How does the characters personality, appearance and powers and your character relate back to your chosen mythos?
Because she is emo in her past life and is emo now.
History: The River of Emo was this place where all the dead emo people were like WE DON'T WANT TO BE EMO ANYMORE and Lethe was all like "Lololol YOU ALL SUCK. TRAITORS." and banished them back to Earth.
Anyway, one day that Vegetable person Kame-hame-ha'd her, because he politely disagreed with her opinion of his level of suckitude, and then she died and was all angry that she died and wanted to get revenge on him so stuck around, and then Airi brought her back to life in the land of
OKAMI
Anyway, since she was a river, ever since she was born people kept trying to draw lilypads on her with their Celestial Brushes, and this made her very sad. She was a musical genius, however, and at two months (toddler stage) she was invited to demonstrate her kazoo-playing skillz in national orchestras.
Also, at five months (kid stage), she fed all the animals in the world and they all loved her and the tigers didn't eat her when she came near, that's how much they loved her. Also she found all the Stray Beads and her power levels were four million.
Oh yeah and she lived in like this house in Kamiki Village (don't double-take at me, this is an actual village in Okami!!!) with a water wheel and stuff by the river and a waterfall and she brewed b33r but was never allowed to drink any of it, which also made her very sad
and then she got the exploding poo ability
Guardian: Her guardian is this lecherous little bean called Issun, who is both lecherous and very bean-like. However, since he is unfit to take care of a child, she lives with Kushi and Susano. The former brews sake and the latter is a descendent of Nagi, and is also the GREATEST WARRIOR WHO EVER LIVED.
World: Okami is the GREATEST THING EVER, the drawing distance isn't too great and you often can't see objects unless they're like five feet away from you, but everyone is very lovelyly animated and there are lots of cherry trees everywhere and grass, and night and day are both approximately 10 minutes long, there's this neat phenomenon there called rain too, I think that's the best part.

General Tips
GENERAL TIPS
- Spell check! It is hard for some people to concentrate if the entry they are reading is full of errors.
Research. You can never do too much research on your concept. Find out as much as you can about the mythological being/event/legend that your Fa'e is based on. It makes it far more interesting if you actually know what you are talking about.
No chat-speak. Think of this in terms of a term paper, or a employment application (although, it should be a bit more fun). Would you use chat-speak on either of those?
Make sure the link to your legend that you post in your entry works.
Anya! XD
Good luck everyone, I am looking forward to reading all of your entries!
Kalindara
Make sure you're not too close to the personality of an existing fa'e - while not restricted, we'd prefer to see some new types in HQ, not the same old.
Personally, I like it when it's obvious that you know your own fa'e/character very well. Not to be confused with being incredibly attached to or in love with the idea, but knowing it so well that you can very easily explain them and their reactions to us.
Best of luck to you all! heart

AAAGH SO EXCITED!
Everyone work hard and try to do your best to convey what would make your Fa'e a good addition to the fold. Writing ability is good, and interesting concepts are dandy, but don't forget that the end result is just as, if not more, important than the rest; I'm expecting to be dying to harrass the winners for roleplay after this contest, so make sure that your entry is something that would add into the dynamics of the Fa'e and be fun to roll with!
Good luck to everyone! 4laugh

Please keep in mind that the last concept contest, the entry count was well into the hundreds! Therefore, it would be wise to make every effort possible to try and make not only your entry unique and creative but your character as well!
Since we do not have a word limit this time around, some things you may consider (briefly! please keep in mind that most of us have very short attention spans especially me!) expanding upon is your character's education, culture and beliefs, and anything else that would distinguish your dream Fa'e from the rest of the crowd. We know that you're probably in love with your concept, make us fall in love too!

To be expanded as the contest progresses. Please ask questions in thread and we will add them and our answers in here!
Q: Do hair attributes (color, length, texture, style, facial hair, body hair, etc. etc.) count all as separate things for appearance?
A: Well, while you're going to want to simplify it as best you can, "hair" (color, length, texture, that sort of thing) would be one attribute... I think that as long as it's pretty much the same thing (at least as color, thickness, texture is concerned, though length would understandably be different) that it should count as one. "Eyes" are in a category of their own (color, shape, thickness of eyelashes) and then there's skin and markings and claws and tails and ears... So just pick whatever's most important to you!
Q: By summarizing my myth, I take it that my rewritten myth that I have in my quest thread is alright?
A: Yep, it is A-ok! =D Just remember to link to your sources!
Q: What about us that asked for a stamp say on the 30th yet haven't gotten one before the 1st? still paying the 2k entry fee, yush?
A: Ok, what the deal will be is that anyone who posted before the 1st in the stamping thread is potentially eligible for the discount. If we reject your thread for stamping then of course you can't get it, but if we DO stamp you (and I'm going to try to go through them right now to catch up on everything as best I can) then you are eligible for the discount. Just give us a few days, a lot of us have been really busy the past few days.
Q: Is ... a good/bad Fa'e concept? Please Help!
A: During the three year existence of the Fa'e, the topic of what is a Fa'e has been discussed, tested, challenged and refined many times. In fact there is an entire Guild dedicated to writing a Fa'e Quest. If you have questions regarding what makes a good/bad Fa'e concept, please refer to the Fa'e Quester Guild first, as it is likely that your question has already been answered there!
Q: I want my concept to be confidential! Where do I send it?
A: You can send your concept idea to Fae Contest Staff account. PLEASE understand that you can only send it ONCE. So make sure to revise it, spell check it and think about it before you click the send button.
Q: Is co-owning okay? Can two people work on one entry? Could I give the Fa'e to someone else if I won?
A: While there are some Fa'e who have co-Guardians, this was done because the Fa'e's original Guardian had some pressing RL reasons to be away from Gaia or the Fa'e game, and so they chose someone to care for their Fa'e in their absence. Co-Guardianship is very much the exception, not the norm, and it makes things complex - two people both RPing one character can get very messy very quickly. So no, no co-owning is allowed for this contest. One Guardian, one Fa'e.
As for two people working on one concept - whoever will be the Fa'e's Guardian, should they win, needs to do the most work. The prompts are not only to test your concept, they are to test your roleplaying and writing skill. YOUR being the operative word. We don't care how well someone who won't be RPing can write - we care about how well YOU can write.
In that same vein, if you win you cannot give the Fa'e to someone else. If you can write brilliantly, that's great - but we need to know how the Guardian operates.
Q: My concept, while rooted in actual mythos, is an original character. A sort of "what if" spin on a facet of a legend. Would this be considered appropriate or would only having roots in a legend make the concept fall short of eligibility?
A: Spin offs and "what if" situations are eligible, as long as at least part of your story is based on the actual legend. If you are simply using a mythos as a setting and place your own random character in it, then it's not eligible.
Q: The rules say that your concept character has to be destroyed so it can be reborn - is something simply being defeated and falling into obscurity in the legend, with the entrant making up the death, okay?
A: Sure, you can make up the death/destruction. It doesn't need to be stated anywhere in the legend as long as it had, in fact, occured. The reason for this restriction is to make sure that the fa'e is a "reincarnation", not a clone.
Q: Is using a fictional mythology base (i.e. from something like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc) acceptable?
A: Not for the purposes of this contest, no. Although there are some Fa'e that aren't based on real-world mythology, they are based on ORIGINAL mythology that the Guardians made up themselves. For this contest, the mythology base you use has to be a real one from an actual human culture.
Q: I wanted to know how old the mythology had to be - if something as
relatively recent (in religious terms) as Discordianism could be used."
A: As long as the thing you are basing it off is dead, then we think it's okey.
Q: My myth is really obscure and the only reference I've found is in a description of a book being sold online. It's got some of the main points of the story in it. Is that enough for a reference? How long/complete does the legend have to be?
A: Sure. But we'd suggest going to the library and find out more about your legend, if you want to write a decent description for the judges. Your reference should be at least a paragraph long. Hopefully more. Being thorough is good. And frankly - if you can barely find information on the appearance and history of that one particular creature - why do you bother? There is no shortage in fairy tales, legends and gods out there. You got lots to choose from.
Q: Is the 'history' section of the form meant for elaboration on their life before incarnation, or after incarnation and before they are found by Airi and Conrad?
A: Both. You only need to give us the very basics of their pre-reincarnated life -- who they were, their role, any major events, and, most importantly, how they died or were destroyed -- and most of the focus should be placed on their life after reincarnation, in the world they're growing up in.
