Welcome to the Siren's Lure, home of Nereids and Mohnikei. We've been a part of Gaia for years now, making our home amidst the vast fresh and saltwater pools near Envy's lair. It was Envy who first found us, bringing us guidance and helping us to learn more about our land-dwelling neighbors, and now, I cannot imagine a life without the ties that Envy has forged between us and the humans/demons/dragons/angels/etc. that live outside of Gaia's waters.

I am Arioso, the lorekeeper to the Nereids, and bonded to Trio Maxwell-Chang, and it is my task to oversee my people, ensuring their health and happiness. It is also my self-appointed task to oversee the Mohnikei, and help guide them as they venture closer to the surface...

12/31/2005: New Year's Eve surprises and a teaser on page 116!

12/03/2005: Congratulations to the winners in the first Mohnikei flat sale held today. Changes to the front page continue, including new banners and a new link image for the shop. Shop-wide plots are being planned to reveal more about the new arrivals in the lagoon.

12/01/2005: The Mohnikei have arrived! Please be patient as I update the front page to accomodate our new companions.

1. The shop staff are gods. Do not argue with the gods, or you will be smitten and added to the blacklist. If you are told there are no shells or eggs available and continue to pester, you will be ignored even when they ARE available.

2. Flatsales, auctions and raffles will be CLEARLY announced both on the first page of the shop, and on the current page of the thread.

3. No rudeness! I mean business on this. If shells or eggs are available and you didn't get one for whatever reason, whining, threatening and generally making a twit of yourself will NOT get you one, nor will it endear you to those that might just be kind enough to give you a shell or egg later from a breeding.

4. Faking bids at an auction or flatsale (even as a joke) will result in a permanent ban from ever owning a pet from this shop, even if it's a gift from a current owner.

5. Trades can only be made with shells or eggs. The owner(s) of an adult Nereid or Mohnikei can only be changed under very special circumstances (ex. - the owner is leaving Gaia and wants a friend to have their pet).

6. Pet trades MUST be approved with the shop owner first.

7. The last and most important rule for right now: RP!! Feel free to RP your Nereids and Mohnikei here; just have FUN with them! That's what Gaia's all about, after all. *G*

How do I get one of these pets?
At the moment, the only way to get one of these pets is to wait for an available egg or shell, or alternatively, to approach myself or envy_fairchylde about a possible pet trade or high-priced item bribe. Approaching me will only mean that there is a go-between. All bribes and pet trades are solely between envy_fairchylde and the person offering the trade.

Is Roleplay Required?
No. You will not lose your Nereid if you do not RP her. I offer a place where you can come and RP if you choose to. They're meant to be pretty & fun... not work.

They can breed? But they're all girls!
Yes, your Nereids can breed! Now, it's not like most of you may think... after all, they ARE all female. Nereids create new life by finding a suitable shell to deposit special, thickened bubbles into. These bubbles can pop very easily, but when combined with the bubbles of another Nereid are more stable and produce a new life after only a few days' time. So Nereids don't have true bloodlines, their form of reproduction means that any new Nereid can 'breed' with any other Nereid, even one of the ones that created them... without risk of inbreeding and defect, as with other types of creatures.

Will my baby Nereid look like its parents?
The offspring CAN and usually do look like their 'parents', or they can have completely new appearances and traits. Example, Shiva and Dwynne's first breeding produced an albino Nereid, Kira.

How much do they cost?
Nereids being sold or auctioned are from breedings by the current owners. Prices are established by the owners themselves and said auctions and flat sales are run in the manner they see fit. So... prices will vary from sale to sale.

Mohnikei are 4,000 gold at flat sale currently.

Can the Mohnikei breed with the Nereids?
No. The two species are not interbreedable.

So how do the Mohnikei breed?
That will be revealed in time.

What does "Bondmate" on the Mohnikei tag mean?
Unlike the Nereids, which are nymphs and by nature overly amorous, the Mohnikei are monogamous and will take a single mate.

Taking the concept of the White List from another shop (And for the life of me I canNOT remember which one). Basically, it means that while there is a Black List for those who will be unable to purchase pets here, there is also a White List of people who have gone above and beyond the call of duty and deserve to be recognized for it. There CAN be more than 3 on each list, btw...

The Creation of the Nereids


The world was once ruled by a great pantheon of gods, whose forms and shapes were as vast and numberless as the creatures they reigned over. It was during that time when the Nereids first came into being. There was once a small village of humans who worshipped the god of the water, who had two faces. There was a dark, angry visage he often wore when out at sea, and a more peaceful, serene face for his days traveling the rivers and streams on the land. His name was Kedaelith.

Kedaelith's body was that of a human, though his heart belonged, instead of to those who worshipped him, to the fish in saltwater and fresh. He paid more attention to the silverbright scales flashing through the water than to those who prayed to him for good catches and safe passage over the waves. Often, Kedaelith could be found playing tag with the tiny minnows, or floating after the larger fish of the sea. And with his neglect each year, the humans began to pray to him less and less.

In time, Kedaelith grew weaker. The first thing to go was his mind - where once he'd deliberately ignored the humans in favor of the fish, now he couldn't always remember the odd two-legged creatures he resembled. The other gods laughed and mocked him, but Kedaelith ignored them, too. He was less interested in returning to his duties as a god than to the games he was playing with his great love.

But one day, a girl was born who was destined to return Kedaelith to his true power. She was raised on angry tales of a neglectful god, whose mercy was shown only to the life within the water, rather than the lives which depended on it. For years, she listened to the tales, searching within her for a way to show Kedaelith what he had done to her people. She was uncommonly wise, though few noticed it when confronted with her face. Unlike most of the wise, she was just as beautiful as she was intelligent.

One day, when the first of the suitors showed up to her door, she turned to her father and said simply, "I'm leaving." Before the man could protest, she gathered her things, bidding farewell to a stunned mother and two shocked older brothers. And then, ignoring the boy who had come to ask for her hand, she walked out of the house toward the river the village lived upon. She reached the waters and paused there for a moment, then cast her belongings into the river.

The fish caught in the sudden onslaught of clothing, finding themselves bound and helpless. Their fear caught Kedaelith's attention, and he rose from the water, his angry face searching out whoever would dare to offer his protected creatures such misery. The woman stood her ground, waiting as he stalked toward her. When he stood before her, glowering and fearsome, even in his weakened power, she slowly knelt, her head tilted back as she offered him her throat. "Lord," she said to him, and her musical voice caught his attention.

"What is your name?" he demanded of her, drawing back to strike her down despite her beautiful voice and face. "How dare you mistreat my creatures?"

"It is said among my people that the gods require a tribute to return to their power," she said softly, no fear in her eyes. "I am here to offer myself as your tribute, Lord Kedaelith. I ask nothing in return, save that you protect my people as you do your own." It is said that a tear ran down her cheek as she stared into his eyes, awaiting her death.

"YOUR NAME!" he howled, the wind stirring around him with his anger. Rain began to fall, lashing at them. But neither paid any attention.

"I am called Lirathien," she whispered, closing her eyes. "Please, Lord. Protect us."

Kedaelith grabbed her hair, hurling her into the water and demanding she release his fish as the river grew thicker, the violent water swirling around her. Lirathien could swim, but even her skill wasn't sufficient to keep the water from carrying her off before she could release more than one of the fish. Kedaelith was furious at the sight, determined to keep her from getting away so easily. He reached out a hand, and where Lirathien's legs were, her body fused, a scaled tail slowly forming in their place. Gills appeared on her neck, hidden by a mane of golden hair. She gasped as pain ripped through her with the transformation, then twisted, peering at herself for a moment before an idea entered her mind.

Diving into the water, she swam for the fish, rescuing all as quickly as she could manage - all save one. The last she held tight to, appearing above the water to confront Kedaelith once more. "Make my people like me!" she yelled into the wind, her voice strong and defiant. "Make them something beautiful to you, and we will love you once more!"

Kedaelith froze, his eyes wide. The water was rising higher, faster, the fast current carrying her away now even WITH the changes to her body. And it was spilling into the village, threatening to sweep that away, too. Kedaelith hesitated a moment longer, then gestured. "Return my fish, and you shall get your wish... on my terms only." His eyes roved over her beauty, and he caught her, drawing her back to him.

Already, the power was returning to him, wrapping around him as he felt the people's fear and belief pouring through him. "I will take only the worthy of you - only those whose beauty match my beloved fish." He uttered an incomprehensible word, and the humans found themselves drowning in the water, everyone of them under pain. When the waters finally calmed, there were two dozen Nereids at the edge of the sea. The river had carried them far. They peered at each other, the twenty-three females nervously looking at the wide sea as one lone male gazed back toward the river.

Lirathien's sacrifice was her freedom, not her life, for Kedaelith took her as his wife, showing her the mysteries of the water as she taught him the mysteries of the humans. It was she who named us, and she who always ensured that Kedaelith remembers us.

Please read the following important details before asking for your pair to be placed in a Breeding Pool.

idea The cost for breeding will be 1.5k from each owner, 3k Total. If you are breeding 2 of your own Nereid the cost will be 2.5k. Payment must be made in full before the Nereids will be placed in a Breeding Pool.

idea Nereids will be left in the breeding pools for 1 week to give them plenty of time to... make shells. *grin*

idea Gen1 Nereids will produce between 2-4 shells per breeding, to be determined by the almighty random dice roll. The shop keeper will trust that the owners can work out among themselves how the shells will be distributed.

idea Once your Nereid has bred she will need time to recover before going into a pool again, not less than 30 days.

idea Any offspring that are not being kept by the owners must be sold or auctioned prior to the shells hatching. Little ones will not hatch until they have an official owner. If you do wish to sell your little ones, the shop owner can run the thread or the owners may do so. Just be sure to let me know so that it can be linked on the front page. Fee for selling a shell is 10% of the profit. Example: Nereid shell sells for 5k. Shop owner take = 500.

idea Nereids on the waiting list have first choice at using the Breeding pools. However, it is listed on the waiting list if the breeding fees have been paid or not. Should someone further down the list pay in full they will be allowed to use the breeding pool ahead of someone that has not paid.

idea Any generation Nereid may breed with any Nereid she chooses. The offspring will always be one generation higher than the highest involved in the breeding. Example: Gen1 + Gen2 = Gen3. Gen2 + Gen2 = Gen3. Gen1 + Gen3 = Gen4

idea Breedings involving a Gen2 Nereid, and further higher gen's, will produce between 2-3 shells, to be determined by the almighty random dice roll. Breedings involving Gen3 and on will produce 2 shells.

idea The body line art has changed for the Gen3. This will be the last line art update for the Nereids. However, new hairstyles and eyes will continue to be added occasionally.
