This Barton Town roleplay is a form of advertisement for our geisha guild, Gion Baraen. The guild is looking for people who want to learn how to RP as geisha, geisha enthusiasts, as well as RPs looking for such characters. This RP however, needs anyone interested in a feudal Japan setting.

Rules, Requirements, and other Warnings

redface Romance is encouraged, of course within reason. Arguing is encouraged more than physical fighting. Fighting is fine though, and I highly suggest that you use the dice to determine if attacks hit, or if your character is still standing after taking a bad slash. Deaths on the other hand, must be with the consent of the attacker, victim, and the GM.

redface Players are also expected to be in character at all times. There will be a separate OOC and recruitment thread for this rp(which is this thread), but if you must say goodbye for the day, you can say so in double parenthesis. ((I'm leaving. Ja ne.))

redface The character is not equal its player/author. Whatever the character does, does not neccessarily reflect the player's true personality, particularly, since we have a rough plot to stick to. No bashing of RP skills, except when a stray...person posts without the proper punctuation, capitalization, and common sense. In that case, s/he will be asked to leave, without the guarantee of politeness.

redface This is a text-based roleplaying game. There will be a Game Master, who will meddle in the affairs of mere mortals players. Players will receive directions via GM posts in this thread and/or PMs. Of course she'll explain why, and allow her to convince you that it is a good plot turn. I assure you no subject will be taboo... Anyway, she won't be doing a lot of this, just every now and then to keep things in plot and still going. Write "I don't want a backstory the size of a truck." in your post when you send in your profile to check if you've read the rules, at least up to this part.

redface No Mary-sues or Gary-stues. My definition of this is that all characters must be prepared to take on a 'villain' role, as most of the plots involve a crime-mystery, and I'd rather not reveal who the culprit (even to himself) is until the right time.

Hanamachi: an Ukiyo roleplay.
Setting

What is ukiyo and ukiyo-e?
Japan, Edo Period (1600s to 1867)

Ukiyo translates as "the floating world" - an ironic wordplay on the Buddhist name for the earthly plane, "the sorrowful world". Ukiyo was the name given to the lifestyle in Japan's urban centers of this period - the fashions, the entertainments, and the pleasures of the flesh. Ukiyo-e is the art documenting this era.

The Roleplay is not historical, which will hopefully allow more freedom for the players and the plots to run without having to deal with everyone having to know a lot about history. The roleplaying game is set in an ukiyo environment (ukiyo, meaning floating world), meaning the town is seen as a separate place from the rest of the city. Here the arts flourish, as well as all forms of pleasure, generally without restrictions. Samurai/ronin, geisha, artists and writers are staples in this place.

It is like feudal Japan though, just about the time when the shogunates/feudal lords are warring with each other as well as the royalty supporters (The Tokugawa fall to the Meiji restoration). There is no need for characters to mention these things in particular though, so as not to complicate the focus of the story. This is still a geisha/entertaining RP, and not a samurai/fighting one. The bottom line is that there is a royalty trying to restore peace, and there are other lords who are either at war with other lords or with the government. Spy groups are also around.

The events will take place in and around the district of Yubari, the hanamachi (literally "flower town" wink , somewhere in the middle of a city. Yubari is a geisha district, with okiyas, teahouses, eateries, and stores catering to geishas--for clothing, hair, etc--as well as a school for the geisha-in-training. There are also theaters for dances and plays--kabuki, noh, etc. The government and the warring lords leave it alone.

No electricity, only oil-lamps, fire-lamps and candles. Communication is done by runners/messengers (people, not the YM/AIM kind).

Fights inside teahouses and other such places are not welcome, take them to the streets.

Plots

The roleplay has a muti-plot, but hopefully all the characters/players will meet/bump into each other at one popular teahouse--the Asakura ochaya. Characters form different plots don't have to know each other though.

redface 1. Poison Arc. A businessman suspects he is being poisoned, but by whom? Surely it can't be the geisha who regularly entertains him? Or would it be his trusted samurai friend? Or would it be someone else he doesn't suspect?
[Main players: the two samurai and the two geisha who entertain them]

redface 2. Kimono Arc. Kimonos are being stolen, from an okiya, from a kimono designer, and others. The kimono designer has her suspicious, but she doesn't want to point fingers just like that though, and tries to gather more evidence.
[Main players: Kimono artist, owner of the geisha house/okiya, the maids/geisha in training, geisha of the house, etc]

Mini-games

Drinking games.
For all drinking games, all the players must first make a roll with a 20-sided die. the result is their alcohol tolerance. For every cup of sake they take, they must subtract 2 from their tolerance/"drink points". When they reach 4 or below, the character must act drunk. There are also a lot of ways to act drunk, depending on your character. Some just get sleepy, some get rowdy, some laugh louder, etc. Some...gossip and spill their secrets, moving the plot along.

Geisha must also try to keep track of everyone's tolerance points, since they are the hostesses after all.

redface Big Liar*. Each person tells two very short stories, only one of which is true. Other party members take a guess as to which is the real one, then the storyteller reveals which is which. The one who guesses incorrectly must drink a glass (not a cup. And a glass is -4 instead of just -2).

Bets/dares can be made, and the success of the dare determined by dice. Penalty is drinking, depending on what was agreed upon.

Write as many haikus as one can. Usually a contest between geisha.

Characters

redface Geisha/Geiko, maiko/geisha in training
Most women in the geisha business were usually sold to okiya(geisha house) owners, and had no say in them becoming a geisha. Others are daughters of okiya "mothers", who were once geisha in their youth. Most geisha and especially maiko owe huge debts to their okiyas, because training to become a geisha requires lots of money--for the lessons to the kimonos, etc. Most maiko graduate into geisha at around the age of seventeen.
They rarely know how to fight with swords or weaponry, as there is simply no need to know them, and geisha training takes up a lot of their time,as well as house chores. Geisha can also be kunoichi (ninja), and serve as intel spies. But I don't want to see teen maiko who claim they are ninjas. There is simply no time for them to have another job, and I will repeat, this is really not an anime fighting RP.

redface Hairdresser, Kimono dresser/designer, Fortune-teller, Teahouse mistress/owner, dispatch/messenger
People who work with the geisha. Geisha are said to be suspicious, and will consult foretune-teller on most decisions. The teahouse calls the okiya/geisha house to ask for geisha when the geisha's patrons arrive at the teahouse looking for them.

redface Samurai/Ronin/Ninja
Lets keep this near realistic. Real or just somewhere near. The RP is set in a time where the samurai still enjoy a high and stable position in society, and sword-carrying is still legal. Most of them come to Yubari for some R&R. Ronin are those masterless samurai, often penniless, and go about town looking for work, either as samurai or maybe laborers. Ninjas on the other hand, spies and stealth assassins that they are, may be scattered in the district and do not neccessarily announce that they are ninja. Most work as chefs, deliverymen, streetvendors, etc. Of course some high ranking ninja will be recognized, by geisha and by other patrons, even the samurai. Fighting-wise, I'll leave it up to you and your opponent to work things out.

redface Merchants/Businessmen
Businessmen also come to the district to enjoy themselves, and although samurai look down upon them, the geisha still treat them well. They often become sponsors of geisha, since they can afford to.

redface Actors/Artists/Musicians
Kabuki actors, musicians, calligraphy/woodcut artists, kimono-makers. Are usually friends with geisha, since they live and make a living in the district.

Rumors of kimono missing has started to spread in town. Now the thief has been spotted, and it seems that he (or she?) is only stealing kimonos made by a particular seamstress!

Rumors of a political candidate plotting an assassination are spreading.
