Welcome ladies and gentlemen, to Iridescent Realms. I'm Thorny, and I'll be your host for this contest. I've been on Gaia for 3+ years now but this is my FIRST ever Art Contest and hopefully not my last! As such, I'm terribly excited about it; I really hope you'd be captivated by my original characters and have a great time throughout the contest.

There will be 8 characters to choose from; 4 being my OCs from a particular storyline that I've been working on since forever, and another 4 OCs owned by friends who I've carefully chosen to be paired up with my four. And if that's not enough, there's 5 million gold in prizes, spread out over numerous challenging categories such as the outfit design prize!

And as a side event, there's going to be some casual role-play throughout the contest, giving you the chance to RP with the featured characters and other people. Certainly a good way to inspire and entertain! To those who don't RP, no worries, there'll be lots of people around for chatting, and I do hope that this would be your preferred hangout over the next couple of months.

Contest starts - 1st March 08
Contest ends - 1st September 08 WIPs due on the 1st of October. 2 weeks extension for those who have submitted WIPs ie 15th October. Awards ceremony TBC.

RULES:

Obey Gaia's ToS.
Art theft is strictly prohibited.
Be nice and respect others.
No whining or dissing your own work.
Any art drawn for the contest must not be used for commercial purposes.
You're more than welcome to post any artwork created for this contest on your website, dA, portfolio etc as long as you credit the characters as ours.
Enter as many pieces as you'd like.
However, there is a one prize per entry limit. You can still win multiple prizes with multiple entries.
You may ask us for constructive criticism over a WIP, more info about the characters or questions that need clarifying.
When drawing the companion OCs, they have to be drawn with one of the main OCs to be eligible for the companion prizes.
Do not draw our Gaian avatars, only pieces of the Original Characters listed below are considered.

THORNSHIELD
Height: 6' 0"
Hair: Black - Short and is often windswept or messy.
Eye colour: Black/darkest of browns. Glow green when his aura is activated.
Skin colour: Healthy, bronze tan.
Build: Muscular and broad-shouldered.
Clothing: Always armoured when going to battle, preferring full-plate and other heavy armour. He doesn't use just one suit of armour, but changes often. In peaceful times, he would be donning clothes fitting that of nobility or simple garments suitable for smith-work.
Weapon: Thorn's-Edge is his primary weapon, sheathed behind his back, but he often tests out the varied weapons that he forges.

Personality: Thorn's very friendly and caring. He's charismatic and popular with the ladies as a perfect gentleman. During the heat of battle, he keeps his calm and analyses the situation. Thorn is Lawful Neutral and as a smith, would forge weapons for any customer, regardless of their alignment.

Haksu - Adorable little thing whose company I really enjoy. Hope she doesn't break those weapons I made for her though.
Burzurk - Let's just say I'm glad he's changed from the bloodthirsty machine he once was...
Devaena - This one however, seems to be a source of corruption for Burz. Must watch out for her.
Sygon - Closest friend I have, come to think of it, I pretty much think of him as a brother.
Evelyn - Pretty lass who runs the tavern, would like to have a good talk with her one day.
Celeste - Gorgeous academic who helped us complete the quest. Rarely see her around though.
Ritak - A bit too curious for his own good. May have to lock up certain rooms in the armoury when he's around.

HAKSU
Height: 5' 7''
Hair: Black/dark grey, shoulder-length.
Eye color: Light grey
Skin color: Originally fair, but lightly tanned from adventuring.
Build: Feminine for a swordsman - specifically slender shoulders and hands. She does, however, have muscles. (at least more than your average lady)

She changes outfits often, so you can play around with her outfit designs.

Owner of the Three Behemoths, a set of three large swords forged by Thorn for her.
Personality: Haksu is very care-free and doesn't have a worry in the world. She doesn't spend too much time around others, as she's more interested in slaying monsters and the ecstatic thrill of battle. At social events, however, she behaves as any lady should. Haksu does not like complicated thinking or matters. Instead, she concentrates on what's important, which is to enjoy your life and have fun. Which, to her, would be slaying orcs and other monsters.
Profession: Adventurer, mercenary.

Thornshield - mm... charismatic, smart and strong, forges weapons... and he doesn't expect me to be there 24/7. I wonder if I should break this weapon 'accidentally' to visit him tonight...?
Evelyn - Beautiful girl. Has food and drinks, can't be evil.
Devaena - I respect her, she seems strong. She would be interesting to fight with...
Burzurk - Hot. But not really my type of man.
Sygon - He reminds me of someone I once knew... not in a good way.
Celeste - ... (she'd feel slightly envious of her looks, and would be cordial towards her. )
Ritak - Interesting fellow, life isn't boring when he's around.

BURZURK
Height: 6' 0"
Hair: Red - Length & style differs from time to time, but usually unruly and messy.
Eye colour: Deep red that glows brightly if using his aura skills.
Skin colour: Healthy, bronze tan.
Build: Muscular like Thorn, but slightly leaner.
Clothing: Usually found wearing armour from various sets, scavenging them from his fallen opponents. Spikes and other dangerous features are preferred. Wears simple padded/reinforced leather jerkins when he's not armoured.
Weapon: No main weapon, as he changes weapons frequently like his armour. Is proficient in most melee weapons.

Personality: Burzurk's bloodthirsty and mischievous. He's infamous among the local populace, yet attracts the ladies (especially those who fall for the bad-boys) as he has a natural charm. Originally Chaotic Evil, he has been oscillating between Neutral Evil and Lawful Evil recently.

Burzurk's view on the other characters:
Devaena - A kindred soul. But if her ambitions get out of hand, I wouldn't hesitate to kill her.
Thornshield - Good ol' Thorn, always fun to get on his nerves. Sparring with him is getting too easy though.
Haksu - Promising fighter, perhaps we could get her to join our cause.
Sygon - Flamboyant insect. Not even worth my time.
Evelyn - Attractive innkeep. Pity she seems to have a stick up her arse most of the time.
Celeste - Even more attractive than Eve. I heard she's got an evil side, always a plus point.
Ritak - Annoying like Sygon, but Dev thinks he could be used somehow.

DEVAENA
Height: 6'1"
Hair: A very light and pale white-green - Dev's hair if down is perhaps to her mid-back, but she prefers to keep it worn up in a top-knot with bangs brushing her cheekbones
Eye colour: A mellow shade of emerald green
Skin colour: A darker olive complexion.
Build: Healthy, big-boned, strong. Think female viking/amazon/gladiator and you've got it.
Clothing: Dev favors warriors' clothing and usually wears chainmail undergarments and her beloved gauntlets and leg guards. She favors muted greens, grays, and leafy browns and her armor is generally a charcoal gray. Accents to her clothing/armor are nearly always done in silver.
Weapon: Devaena's main weapon is a greatsword that's nearly as tall as she is. The sword is a valuable battle-worthy weapon, having a customised hilt with glyphs along the blade below the crossguard and a wicked blade design. It's sheathed in a scabbard that rests diagonally across her back and hips, within easy reach. Her secondary weapon is a nondescript shortsword sheathed at her belt and is a 'last resort against all odds' weapon.
*Design Note: You are free to play around with the design of Dev's clothing/armour and weapon, so long as the end result fits the character. The above are just guidelines and artistic license = heart *
Personality: Devious, manipulative, sadistic, and downright evil (Neutral Evil to be specific)...though at first meeting you probably wouldn't know it. Dev can play nice to accomplish her goals, but beneath it all there's an unyielding fiend with one goal on its mind, and that's to manipulate the world around her to her own malicious ends. So when you see this fiend in human flesh smiling at you just so, that my friend is when you should really start worrying...

Dev's Relations:
Burzurk - A very useful and very immortal tool. I can spread a lot of misery through him, but I'll have to watch him carefully.
Thornshield - A dangerous kink in my plan. As much fun as it would be to corrupt him he'll serve a much better purpose dead.
Haksu - A skilled warrior. She would be a valuable ally.
Sygon - So wrapped up in a world of extravagant illusion. I wonder if he'd see another lie slipped into the mix?
Eve - There is something different about this one. Though I believe under the curt exterior she reeks of niceness.
Celeste - If knowledge is power then this one could either be a great enemy or a great asset.

SYGON BLACKMIST
Height: 5' 10"
Hair: Naturally brown - uses illusions to change colours and styles.
Eye colour: Naturally brown - also uses illusions to change colours.
Skin colour: Mediterranean skin-tone.
Build: Slim and well-toned.
Clothing: Enjoys wearing elaborate outfits made from the finest of materials and coloured with the most exotic of dyes. Wears the pair of planeswalking earrings (small amethyst studs) on him at all times and complements his appearance with other pieces of jewellery. Always has a belt that holds pouches filled with items he picks up during his journeys.
Weapon: None, unless his razor-sharp wit counts. He does own staves and wands, but they are mainly for ornamental/aesthetic purposes.

Personality: Sygon's charming and extravagant. He's even more of a ladies man than Thorn. He may be a bit picky and self-centred at times, but is generally jovial and well-liked. Sygon is a Chaotic Good person and enjoys roaming the different worlds/planes.

Evelyn - Even though I've been spending so much time with her, I can't say I know everything about her! Definitely an enigma I must crack, and if possible, bed.
Thornshield - Best friend throughout all planes of existence. Need I say more?
Haksu - Cute friend of Thorn's, he doesn't seem to mind me flirting with her.
Burzurk - I'd avoid this one if I were you.
Devaena - Is she really human? Can't say I trust her.
Celeste - I-I.. still love her.
Ritak - Interesting fellow, seems to enjoy life as much as I do. Those tattoos however...

EVELYN NYHT
Height: 5'1"
Hair: Dark Red - Long and usually left down loose. Sometimes pulled back and styled.
Eye colour: Brown-Green Mismatched (Left Green, Right Brown)
Skin colour: Light tanned with a golden glow from magical reservoir
Build: Petite
Clothing: Always dressed to fit the position and era. Her favorites usually consist of the flowing peasant Medieval era. She usually dresses in colors that will enhance her eyes or hair. She does have armor for the time she must pick up her sword. She is never without her silver trinity knot necklace or plain silver wedding band.
Weapon: Light-bringer was forged by her father, Amandos Nyht. This sword hilt is designed with ancient Aenklesus runes for strength and the blade glows a very gentle blue for accuracy.
Her quarter staff was gifted from her mother, Calien Nyht. There is a small slot to place stone and gems at the top. It enhances her magic.
Nemesis, Cratos, and Apate are daggers. The hilt has lace work knots like that of the Celts. There are elven runes on the blades accuracy and deadly strikes.
Personality: Neutral Good Evelyn is quiet and reserved with first meetings, but a very curious creature. She's a compassionate soul around the people she cares about deeply. She does have a sense of humor under her no-nonsense attitude.
Profession: Tavern & Inn Owner

Evelyn's views on the other characters:
Sygon - He makes me laugh and forget myself often. I will not give in so easily though.
Thorn - He is Sygon's friend and a pleasant person, but I would like to know him better.
Haksu - I do not know what to think of her. She is difficult to read.
Burzurk - The light in him is dimming. I do not trust him.
Devaena - She is deep in the darkness. I wish I had my sword at hand.
Celeste - Even though she is beautiful on the outside, she is corrupt. I feel ill at ease around her.
Ritak - He is an interesting elf that walks a gray area. I am not sure if I trust him or not.

CELESTE SILVERHAWK
Height: 5' 6"
Hair: Brown with the occasional dark streaks - long and silky, different styles for different outfits.
Eye colour: Sapphire blue.
Skin colour: Sun-kissed and healthy.
Build: Slim and well-endowed (about a C-cup).
Clothing: Her profession calls for long robes (dark blue with silver patterns at the hems and collars, with a simple coil of silver string as a belt) with a fitting top half. But as a fashionista, she owns many outfits and loves fitted tops, long jackets together with short skirts, long skirts, elaborate belts and shawls. She also enjoys wearing non-powered glasses just for the look.
Weapon: If you count heavy books as a bludgeoning object. But be warned, she's not beneath hiring assassins.

Personality: Celeste is manipulative and a massive bookworm. She can be haughty at times, but has grown friendlier and somewhat mischievous since meeting Sygon, and enjoys social events (if she's not busy burying her nose between books). Celeste is Chaotic Neutral and pursues infinite knowledge.
Profession: Tome-keeper/Researcher

Celeste's view on the other characters:
Ritak - Useful helper, despite his impish behaviour. I really would like to know the truth behind those tattoos though...
Thornshield - A bit too naive and loyal, especially when it comes to his friends. Cute though.
Haksu - Birds of a feather must flock together judging from her attention towards Thorn.
Burzurk - A most fascinating specimen, given that he originated from Thorn's soul. Could be used if needed.
Devaena - And I thought I was manipulative! Better to get on her good side, until I know her true intentions.
Sygon - He deserves a break from this cat-and-mouse game. I'll need his help for now.
Evelyn - Another researcher. Would have to try and garner some knowledge from her.

RITAK TATELAAL
Height: 5' 8"
Hair: Blond, usually pulled back.
Eye colour: Match his tattoo color ((if no tattoos visible, same as his skin color)).
Skin colour: Usually tanned, though paler when he's been hiding with books for long periods of time. Old symbols and runes, obviously magical, cover the entirety of his body, and can change color ((he can match them with his skin and hide them, though)).
Build: Slim, lean, and obviously flexible and clearly elven.
Clothing: Usually simple, mis-matched, or patched, and varies on the role he's playing. Robes, light armor, simple peasant outfits... He likes bright colors, unless he's trying to avoid drawing too much attention to himself. Naturally, show outfits are more elaborate than others he wears. Ritak doesn't wear too much jewelry, either, maybe a necklace or a few earrings.
*Design Note: Have fun with him!*
Weapon: Varies between daggers and shortswords, as he doesn't have a set weapon and will use whatever is handy.
Personality: Impish and childish, he likes to have fun and hates having to be too serious about something boing. He hates secrets, closed boxes, and locked doors, and is prone to sneaking around or stealing the information he wants. He isn't without some honor, he never keeps objects he's stolen, and only steals for the challenge it can present. Ritak hovers between Chaotic Good and Chaotic Neutral.
Profession: Thief/Entertainer/Slave

Celeste - Irritating at times, but I don't mind helping her out, as long as I get to read all these books.
Thornshield - Friendly enough, I don't have any problems with him.
Haksu - I don't mind her much, no real opinion about her.
Burzurk - SCARY. I'm not gonna go out of my way to anger him.
Devaena - ... why do I get the feeling she's plotting something..?
Sygon - Haha, a good man! I enjoy our discussions, and he's fun enough to be around.
Evelyn - Curious woman... though I wonder if she'd let me put on a show at her tavern for some extra coin..?

Yes, but only with multiple entries. One entry cannot win more than one category.

Can I collaborate with somebody?
Yes, but you have to decide how you're planning to split the prize yourself.

Can we change their outfits a little?

Sure, just as long as it fits the character and scenario. For eg, no putting Burzurk helping old ladies in a futuristic spaceship.

What mediums can we use to make these?
Anything, as long as it's your original creation.

Do you prefer CG over lineart? Realism over anime?
I love all sorts of art and mediums, and it's all about overall presentation, capturing the scene and character perfectly that matters.

I absolutely love Haksu/Dev/Eve/Ritak but hate Thorn/Burz/Sygon/Celeste! Can I just draw the companion OCs alone?
Only if you don't want a shot at the prizes I'm afraid. They have to be drawn with at least one main OC for it to be eligible for prizes. Sorry bout that.

How do the companion prizes get decided?
The owners of the companion OCs choose their favourite piece that involves them.

Haksu - Tentachu Onis, Devaena - Jalil, Evelyn - Lady Evelyn Nyht, Ritak - Zienkyer. Respect them!

Can I draw your character with my own?
Because I love seeing my character interact with others, I have to say yes. However, you have to make sure my character is the main focus, and it will be counted as a single category picture if it only includes one of mine alongside yours.

Why choose Iridescent Realms as the title?
If you haven't noticed by now, my 4 OCs each have their own main colours, and the companions are pretty varied too. Hence, the word iridescent. As for realms, my characters are planeswalkers, meaning they're not confined to just one world.

Why do you spell color as colour?!
Because I live in London (but am from Malaysia) and have learnt the Queen's English. Care to join me for some tea?

REFERRAL CONTEST:
So simple, that anyone could win. All you got to do, would be to advertise this contest to artists throughout Gaia. All they would need to do, would be to post your name in the referral section when they submit an entry. The top two people with the highest number of referrals would win 20k and 5k respectively.

Note however, that entries need to be of a certain quality ie no stick figures or shoddily done doodles that don't even resemble the characters. Also, whoever is found to be using mules posing as different artists to raise their referral count would be disqualified.

Other than that, anything goes. Good luck referring those artists!

This is an ongoing roleplay/character contest! I'm gonna be keeping an eye on the Role-Playing throughout the contest, and the characters that join in.

The person with the best character and does the best job of roleplaying, will win a free fullbody black and white drawing from me of their character! Depending on the character, the RP, and many other things, the drawing could get even neater.

For example, if the character has developed a very good relationship with another character, the drawing might become a couple drawing. Or if the character has done something very special or is just generally very good, I might add a background.

This event shall run throughout the entire art contest, but if for some reason I can't stay on Gaia, I'll pick a winner of the characters joined so far. More reason for you to join now!

Interested in knowing more about the characters? Looking for some fun throughout the contest? Wanting to bring in your own characters to the fray? Well look no further, and welcome to the casual role-playing session! As you all may know by now, my characters are planeswalkers and are known to venture into various different realms, meeting countless of people. This setting is just one of them.

Note however, that this setting is rather non-canonical, as it's a bit unlikely for the companion OCs (who are from different worlds) to all be together in this one. And as such, it's not fully-fleshed out, heck we don't even have a name for it! Rather, it's a mish-mash of locations that we've each had in mind. Anyway, a little bit of an overview of the setting. It would be a fantasy/medieval world with magic and low technology.

How your character got here, is up to you. He/she may be a local, or a traveller from some other continent, or even from some magical portal, it doesn't really matter, as it's all in the name of fun. The map below shows the explorable locations, with four of them being attributed to the four OC pairs. They are; the Armoury of Thorns, the Athenaeum, the Bleak Barrens Arena and the Iron Knight Tavern.

Because there need to be some set rules& guidelines about the RP, here they are:

No godmodding and all that jazz. Ask if you're unfamiliar with all this.
Be literate and legible.
Keep posts concise and simple, there is no need for massive posts of a billion paragraphs.
Respect others and no flamewars.
Because of time zone differences, it is hard to resolve sessions in a day or two. It's advised that you restrict your interactions to a few people at a time to avoid waiting for replies, or in turn, slow others down.
OOC-chat is allowed, since there will be others who aren't RPing. Try to make it clear that you're RPing or speaking ooc.
More rules to be added if needed.

Lastly, as there may be a number of participants in this casual RP, it may be advisable to send me a PM with a link to your character's profile - journal, website, guild, etc. I will then put it up here, so others can refer to it. Ctrl+F is your friend here!

RP LOCATIONS

The Trade Route & the Merchant's Campsite
A wide, well-travelled road, crossing from the north-west to the east. Always bustling with activity and often lined by establishments such as the armoury, the route is usually safe from bandits, perfect for the merchants to ply their goods. A campsite has been erected next to the river, where merchants can either rest the night and be entertained by visiting musicians and performers.

The Armoury of Thorns - Thornshield & Haksu
A popular trading spot for weapon merchants and adventurers, the armoury boasts a wide selection of fine weapons and armour, personally forged by Thornshield, the resident smith. Custom-made items can also be requested, but not all orders would be met with approval. Made from large stone bricks, the armoury is divided into several sections; the display room, the smithy and the storeroom, with the first two being public and the last locked up, as valuable items and components are stored here. Despite its popularity, it is usually manned by the smith alone, though he does hire helpers when deluged with requests.

The Iron Knight Tavern & Inn - Sygon & Evelyn
Just off the trade route where the roads crosses is the reputable Iron Knight Tavern and Inn. A ragged looking gnome patrols the grounds mumbling curses and enchantments, paying no attention to those around him. Iron Knight is a combination of three stone buildings; the tavern, the inn, and the stables. The tavern is the busiest part of the entire complex because of the assortment of foods and drinks. Joining the tavern is the inn where some of the inebriated patrons can recover from their joyous drinking, for a price. The staff is an assortment of genders and races who compliment and balance each other well. This makes Iron Knight a welcoming business to visit.

The Athenaeum - Celeste & Ritak
The Athenaeum is a citadel that serves as a massive library, containing books and scrolls from throughout the land, covering even the most obscure of topics. Originally owned by a hermetic Archmage, it has been acquired by Celeste via dubious means, and parts of it have been opened to the public (for a donation or small fee). The inner sanctums that hold the rarest of tomes remain closed off to the general public and are maintained by the caretakers, brown-robed scholars who are now tasked to tend to the visitors. Surrounding the citadel are lush gardens, a recently implemented feature to raise the image of the once mystery-shrouded establishment.

The Village of Stonewall
Slightly off the trade route and well-protected by the mountainous terrain, the village is the last respite before the trek through the canyon path to the treacherous southlands & lowlands. The village boasts the usual amenities, and its main attraction is stone walkway up a mountain peak that offers a fantastic view.

The Bleak Barrens Arena - Burzurk & Devaena
An old amphitheater that's been converted into a gaming and betting arena that features various face-off games, small races, and (the prominent feature) sparring brawls. Patrons can sign-up to participate or just watch the action and bet on their favorite. Rumours abound about the arena and its owners, the most common being that the lower levels contain more grisly events, but the doors are barred and guarded by men and women who seem to know their way around a blade. Servers in gray clothing walk the stands offering refreshment while the bookies in gilded clothing search for the risk takers and those willing to wager their gold, scribing the bets in the leather-bound books.

K'thuzar & the Iron Mines
A rowdy mining town, whose occupants are mainly miners and their family. They supply unrefined ores to the Village of Stonewall and to merchants along the trade route. Their main source of entertainment would be betting in the Bleak Barrens Arena. The mine itself is rich with iron ore, but rumour has it that deep ancient caverns have been discovered before, only to be sealed up out of fear.

Note on distances:
Don't worry too much about the exact distance between locations. But as a general guideline, it takes half a day's (or more) horseback ride from the Iron Knight to the Trade Route/Armoury. The map is roughly to scale, so you can approximate the distance between other locations.
