You keep them happy by feeding them and keeping the temperature good. And playing music!

Haha! Gaia is addictive like that! Especially if you have friends to talk to!
I don't have any of those big houses, but I have fish... and you get free food, so no worries about that. And you have to experiment with the temperature. Hearts will appear on top of your fish's head if he likes it.
