We've had some exciting new items this month! First, we had our long-awaited hair update! The popular Rainy style, the classic French Braid, the fancy Upsweep, messy Bed Head, and curly Ringlets were received with mixed feelings by the community. Personally, I do not like the quality of art done on the Ringlets, French Braid, or Upsweep-the attempt at making curls in front of the face wasn't that good. But many people like them a lot, and can be used with a number of different outfits.
This month THREE monthly collectibles were released-Again! The creators really went out on a limb here, creating something never been seen before on Gaia-Your very own date! I think this is a great idea, to actually have ANOTHER character next to your avatar, from Gaia's soap opera, All My Gaians. The Celebrity Date gives you the choice of appearing with Yuki, Adriana, Ines, Ren, and Nick. There is also the Celestial Wrap, with options for a scarf, a halo, a cloak, a sash (belt), a background, and orbital rings. The Dark Star weapon offers a variety of weapon poses, including a cross on your back, stars on your head, in your eye, and in assault formation. It seems that the Celebrity Date is largest in popularity, followed by the Celestial Wrap and finally the Dark Star, which I haven't seen anyone wearing.
We also had our Valentines Day event, but sadly got only one item, the disappointing Labu Necklace. This necklace has a scant two poses, one of which is a heart shaped necklace, the other, hearts around you head. The majority of the Gaian population, including this reporter, was disappointed at the lack of items for this particular event.

Real World News

By R!nalda

HOLLYWOOD, CA- An all-out celebrity Popularity war has ensued ever since the death of Anna Nicole Smith. Previously to this incident, Brittany Spears was constantly in the news for her in-and-out of rehab stint -- time and time again. Then, previous model/actress Anna Nicole Smith died of currently unknown reasons, and dominated celebrity magazines and news shows. With the legal battle that already was in motion over daughter, Dannylynn, a new legal battle is now happening over her slowly decomposing body. Ever since her death, even more men have come forward, claiming to be the father of Dannylynn. Brittany Spears, though, didn't seem to think to much of all the attention Anna was getting, so she went and shaved her head. Yes, that's right, SHAVED HER HEAD. She then went and got two tattoos, and pulled two more of her in-and-out of rehab stunts. The prospects now do not look so good for her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden. Recent reports claim that she freaked out and attacked a car with an umbrella because she has not been able to see her kids. Not like Kevin Federline, their father, is much of a role model either-This reporter hopes that that some really good foster parents get these kids. And attention starlets: No one really cares what you're doing. They just get a kick out of watching you make a fool of yourself.

By: Evan Korken

Sadly, this is Evan Korken's last article. Sorry to see you go, EK!

There have been some interesting avatars this month and some interesting winners as well.

No pants day was this month (February 12th) and the Panty Dictator made a return to the Avatar Arena getting spot number four in the fifth week of 2007 to commemorate the event.

In the sixth week of 2007 a glitched avatar apparently got into the top ten using one of the many glitches the ghost sheet has to offer. It was a very funny avatar indeed, made to mimic someone's mouth agape as a bullet (the Cig item was used as the bullet) comes flying toward them.
The most recent winner is a very well done Cosplay of Captian Jack Sparrow by Namkwahom. Savvy?

Letters from the Editors

User ImageEditor, R!nalda
Hello Gaians and welcome to the second edition of Gaia Gazette! I apologize for the lateness of this edition, as I had a four hour long practice and tons of homework on Tuesday and couldn't get on on Wednesday. Well, something you'll certainty's see a lot of this issue is 'This article has not yet been submitted.' at the beginning of articles. I decided to take a risk this time and hope that my reporters were responsible by only reminding them a few days before their deadline, but, sadly, only a few actually turned them in. So I've been cramping my fingers this afternoon and managed to fill in something for almost all the articles. I don't even know where the art arena is, so I couldn't do that one, and I've been trying to access the featured home for over an hour to no avail. But, this month certainly has been an exciting one! Finally, a new hair update, and once again, 3 monthly collectibles! Also, we have had the addition of new sub forums, Cooking and Style under General Discussion, and the promise of an anniversary ball soon! We also had the exciting return of Josie and the housing commission! Finally, the Gazette has it's own headquarters! It's located at Barton 004953. I'll find a link (somehow) later. Inside, you can see that we already have 4 desks, a coffee pot (which somehow is underneath the table) some event memorabilia, a clock, and some *ahem* laptops. We are taking donations, so that we can expand to fit all the desks we need inside and to get more desks, chairs, and *ahem* laptops. So donations are greatly appreciated! I'd like to say a special thank you this edition to LadyRogue, who, like always, got her amazing article in WAY before the deadline, and to [.Hermes.] (previously Tomi.mp4 and iTomiB) and White-Out Stain for talking so much in the thread that I can't even keep up with the conversation. You guys keep this newspaper alive!

Well, absolutly nothing has happened with the plotline-at all! Not since Christmas! There wasn't even some juicy romance between Yuzi and Flarn for Valentines Day. Everyone is VERY, VERY disappointed with the lack of updates. Hopefully there will be some good action at Gaia's Anniversary Ball, or the Easter Event. Easter's only 40 days away now!

Guild Spotlight

User ImageGuild Spotlight: Newbie Supporting and Training Guild
By: Lady Rogue

Let's face it, starting out as a newbie on Gaia isn't exactly easy. Sure, you get a starter kit and the newbie quest, but where do you go from there? There's so much to see and do on Gaia, where do you turn to when you don't know the answer to something?! Well have no fear, newbies! The Newbie Supporting and Training Guild is here to help. This guild is dedicated to helping new Gaians have a pleasant first time experience on the site. The timid and shy newbie will find this friendly guild a haven as they offer such things as tips on making their way around Gaia, dos and don'ts, and even limited donations.

I had a chance to talk to the owner DarkElf27 about his guild and its purpose.

LadyRogue: How did you come up with the idea for this guild?
DarkElf27: Well, I picked up a guild from an unsatisfied captain for 7k. It was almost entirely abandoned by its members at the time, I don't recall what it's subject was, but that's how I got it. It remained in my possession, inert, for about a month before I actually came up with an idea, when I had a moment of boredom, and wandered into the "Welcome to Gaia" forum. At that moment, it clicked to me. What happens to these people after a few random Gaians say hello, and their thread passes into nothingness? Not much; most of them end up in the chatterbox, another illiterate spammer. Then I thought... Why hasn't anyone made a guild to stop this? Everyone complains about how newbies are destroying Gaia, but no one had made an earnest effort to stop it.
So that was that; I titled the guild, made a couple of threads to start it off, and even managed to get a Gaia moderator to link to the guild from one of the announcements in the Welcoming forum.
LR: It was obviously a stroke of luck then that you acquired the abandoned guild from its previous owner! What types of things do you and your crew do to help newbies?
DE: More a matter of timing, not many knew of the guild, so not many bid for it. You can find offers like that more places than most people think.
Quite a few things...
Well, first and foremost, we provide a friendly environment for them; I'm sure you all know how bad the flaming can get in the main forums.
We provide a gather point, where both newbies and people wanting to help them can congregate with ease.
We provide limited donations for new members, though that is probably less valuable than the information we provide.
We have extensive resources on how to do almost anything Gaia-related, including things like a dictionary of Gaian terms, and a guide to the most efficient ways to get gold.
We try to help them prioritize things on Gaia, like how much more respect you get for being literate.
I think that's all the big things.
LR: It's great that you do all this for new Gaians. How hard do you personally think newbies have it on Gaia?
DE: Both harder and easier than the older members did. They get a great deal more, item-wise, gamewise, and in the way of help from Gaia itself than the older members did when they were new, but they are also treated quite a bit worse nowadays than older members were treated when they were new.
LR: You've obviously been on Gaia for quite some time. What was your experience as a newbie like?
DE: Hmm. Almost 3 years ago. I was, what, 12? I admit I was probably as twerpy as most of the other newbies around then, and admit to spamming for gold in my first month or so, but I got the hang of it fairly quickly. I recall being literate at the time, but can hardly go back and check. I went into guilds early on, and mostly recluse in them, to date.
LR: Last question for you, do you think the guild has been a success?
DE: Well, it's been successful. Ranked 6th out of all GGN guilds, 2nd guild ever to be put in the Guild Spotlight (August of last summer), 20,000+ members... Howe

Forum Spotlight

User ImageFeatured Forum: Chatterbox
By: White-Out Stain

The Chatterbox is usually considered a place where "noobs" gather and stupidity seems to be the only thing in great abundance there. However, there is a thread you can access with a single click that kicks stupidity out the door and welcomes in a new sense of friendly conversation.

The Darkness Tavern was a thread started by Devils_Rain (now known under a different account named Count Lecter) on March 20, 2005. It was originally a hang out for just a few friends, then the number of regulars grew, causing the number of pages to skyrocket. Now numbering in at over 3,000 pages, the Darkness Tavern still thrives today as a hang out for friends and any newcomers who would like a place to converse freely without the limits the other areas of Gaia have.

On most days, the conversation there is usually just entertaining chat amongst friends, but there have been times in the past where people have gotten into serious discussions about serious, real-world issues that affect each of our daily lives.

The Darkness Tavern welcomes all to chat there, with only a few rules, including No Bumping, No Advertising, and No Cybering. The Tavern keeps a list of regulars and a list of events that have occurred in the past and have been documented for everyone to remember.

The link to access the Darkness Tavern is as follows: Darkness Tavern Before posting, make sure to look over the rules, because the regulars have a tendency to over-react to people who disregard them.

Gaia Community Project Spotlight

User ImageSurvivor: Battle of the NPCs
By: [.Hermes.] (previously Tomi.mp4 and iTomiB)

Ever wondered which NPC would come out on top in some sort of extreme popularity contest battle of tooth and claw to the death? I know I sure haven’t. But for those of you that have, thanks to the newest Survivor spoof, you can, sort of (assuming of course, that you have a vivid imagination and some spare time).

Survivor: Battle of the NPCs! is one thread I always seem to find in the top of the GCProjects forum. Never mind that I’m looking for it. The point is that it’s a popular and unique thread made for the purpose of finding which non-player character is the most greatest of ever.

It started with a list of all the NPC’s with the number 10 beside them. The job of the next poster is to copy that list and change one number. Let’s say I really hate Cindy Donovinh because I can’t spell Donovinh. Okay, let’s just admit that I hate ol’ Cindy. I’d copy the last post and minus her a point. I want her OUT! If I want mister (if titles are used on cats) Rufus to survive, I’d add him a point.

Survivor has been running for three months now and it is down from all 43 of Gaia’s NPC’s (betcha can’t name ‘em all!) to just over half of them, with Peyo, Ian, Leon, Rufus and Santa leading the pack. The LabTechs’ defenses are being chiseled away with only a few left. This good Gaian’s vote is going out to little Peyo. And yes, I did do most of the work to bring him up to his current position. Don’t be hatin’.

Although comments and conversations are allowed, they are rare. It seems that most of the participants are focused on faming (or de-faming) their favorites, and I encourage you to join the fun. Do you want that icky (insert some icky NPC) to win? Well do ya? Didn’t think so. Now go make your opinion count, and don’t forget to read the rules.

Who will win? Who’s teeth and claws are the sharpest (metaphorically of course, or Rufus would win automatically)? And now I end with a huge clich, IT’S UP TO YOU!

NPC Spotlight

User Image[NPC] Edmund
By: unknown flying objects

Edmund- the mysterious owner of H. R. Wesley in the beautiful city of Durem. He is one of the fastest runners around, and he competed in the Gaian Olympics. If it were not for a spiffy girl Edmund would've taken home the prize and pride. Instead Moira placed first. It is known that Edmund is quite the ladies man. According to an actual Gaian, D.Darko, he is quite sick in the mind, or perverted. Most Gaians would agree.

Edmund once said his shop was in Durem because of the attractive women there, but some of us believe otherwise. Rumor has it that he came to Gaia from China and Japan. There he practiced the martial arts, and that is how recieved his scar. That is also why he is compared to a ninja. I was thought it was a war scar. Anywho, it is said that he left a poor Japaneese woman behind who has pregnant. She is supposedly searching for him to have revenge, and so he came here disguised as a shop owner.

Truth be told, Gambino and Edmund seem to be good friends. It is known that Gambino buys clothing from him. I can see why! Edmund sells classy, extravagant clothing. If you're looking for something fancy this is the place to go. You should drop by his shop sometime.

So, most people believe him to be a honest, courageous man and the such, but will their opinions change? After hearing about him leaving a pregnant woman I'm sure some feelings shall change. Just don't consider him too lowly, all in all I believe he is a good man.

Edmund is believed to be the owner of The G Team, a new small organization; partnered with Leon and Old Man Logan. Not much is know about this organization, but everyone seems to think it is for good, perhaps a police force. I think maybe it involves something with a school. Once while in his shop I noticed a sign hidden behind the counter read 'Exchange school credits'. I asked but Edmund, without answering, beckoned me out; then he closed. The next day I returned to find it missing.

As time goes on we will continue to learn of his, and discover the real truth of this man. The unvaquished truth. Untill then, Journalist UFO Signing Out. Also, a big thanks to D.Darko and Rhoswen Gaehlie for discussing their beliefs and facts with me.[/list:u]
