A Little Story For A Stranger

This is the begining of a book I'm working on, It's called "And She Dies". Its about a mother and her daughter living through the bad times after the father's accident......well here goes~

Prologue

When she first looked into my eyes, I knew she would mean a lot to me.
"Vera, don't water your sunflowers too much ok honey?"
Vera, a name I chose, a name filled with faith..
"Ok mummy, but what if they're still thirsty?" questioned the little 6 year old.
"Oh, isn't she beautiful?" I said as I held the new-born baby.
My husband nodded and said, "What should we name her?"
"Oh sweetheart, can't you see your sunflowers smiling in the sunshine?"
"Yeah, they do look happy! Does that mean they aren't thirsty anymore?"
"Yes", I replied, "My smart little angel."
I felt warm when I saw my little girl turn towards her sunflowers, and talked to them like best friends in a kindergarten, she seemed to be so pure with happiness, so separated with what was going on the other side of our little home, so far away to yet understand the horrors that await us.
"How about Vera? Vera May." I suggested, "Meaning Faith."
"Yes, it's a beautiful name...Vera May...",My husband whispered the name into the little baby's ear, and lifted her from my arms and held her close to his chest, "Your names Vera May, isn't it a nice name for my little princess?"
"Mummy?"
"Yes princess?"
"When daddy gets home, I' going to my show my sunflowers to him."
"Oh, I'm sure daddy would think they're beautiful."
My little Vera nodded in delight, "I'm going to go and play with my dollies."
"Alright, you go do that, and after mummy's finished gardening, how about we surprise daddy by baking a cake for him?"
"Yes, yes, yes! Can the cake have strawberries in top?" she asked beckoningly.
"Of course, daddy loves strawberry cake doesn't he?"
"Yup!!" she hugged me and skipped back inside the house.
The little baby gurgled in joy.
"Looks like she likes her name." I said in a giggle.








Chapter 1

When I heard the phone ring, I had a feeling that I didn't want to pick it up. Me and Vera were making the strawberry cake.
"Why don't you pick up the phone mummy, it might be daddy."
"Hmm, you're right dear, can you please pass the phone dear, I need to wash my hands."
"Ok!" she said as she ran to the phone.
While I was washing my hands, I wondered who would be calling, we just moved here, who would know our phone number except for ourselves?
"Mummy?" My thoughts were interrupted by my sweetheart.
"Yes? Oh, right, thank you dear",I took the phone, and clicked the button with the green phone printed on, and pressed the phone to my ear, "Hello, Rachel May speaking."
"Hello, good evening Mrs. May, I'm David Egan, I am head of the local police, and I have some very unfortunate news...."
Once I heard the words flow into my ears I felt like screaming my heart out, I felt like telling this David person to shut up and stop lying.
"Mummy what's wrong?"
I realized tears flowing from my eyes.
"MUMMY WHAT'S WRONG?" shrieked Vera.
"Hello? Mrs. May are you still there? We need you to come here for identification........hello..." said that David person's voice coming out from the phone.
I shook violently. Stop! Please stop happening! Rewind! Please...please...
Very faintly I heard my daughter scream.
"MUMMY..."

* * * * * *
When I woke up, I found myself in a small room I've never been in, the bed I was on was quite uncomfortable.
"Mrs. May, you're awake." Said a woman's voice I did not recognize.
"Where am I?"
"You're in a hospital, its ok now, your daughter is in the hospital's playroom. I'm a nurse working here."
"Why am I here?"
"You fainted, your daughter is a very smart young girl, she knew her address and how to call for an ambulance, I'm sure you taught her right?"
"Yes, I did." Then it hit me, "Where's my husband?"
"Umm, you need some more rest now." She said in a nervous tone.
"I said where is my husband?"
"I don't I should be telling you know...you need your rest Mrs. May." The nurse said even more nervously.
"I NEED TO KNOW WHERE MY HUSBAND IS, TELL ME WHERE MY HUSBAND IS!!" I jumped off the bed and went heading for the door, but I found a man walking in. He grabbed me by the shoulders, and said, "Mrs. May, I am Dr. John Belford, you need to rest right now!"
"WHERE IS MY HUSBAND, I NEED TO SEE MY HUSBAND!!" After screaming those words out, I slumped to the floor, and started to cry, "Where is my husband, I need my husband..." I whimpered.
There was a silent pause, until Dr. Belford crouched down beside me and said in a gentle voice, "Mrs. May, I know this is hard for you, its hard for us too, well why don't you sit on the bed, I'll tell you everything, alright?"
I nodded eagerly, as Dr. Belford helped me to the bed.
"Well, your husband, he was fatally injured in a car accident and from what I know, your husband did not do anything wrong, a truck was speeding and didn't see the red light, kept speeding without noticing your husband's car turning towards it, and unfortunately... that was when in happened..."
I sat there shaking, slowly absorbing the words Dr. Belford said, and trying to make some sense of it in my mind. I felt a sudden warmth on my back, I looked back and saw the nurse wrapping a blanket on me, and I gave a weak smile and turned back to Dr. Belford, "Thank you for telling me..."
"No problem, well, it's best you have your rest now."
"Before I do, can I please talk to my daughter?"
"Yes, no problem. Janice, can you please go and get Mrs. May's daughter?"
"Yes Doctor, right away." Replied the nurse, then she walked out of the door.
The doctor and I sat there in an awkward silence, he was just about to say something when I heard my daughter crying out in the hallway, by the sound of her footsteps, you could tell she was running.
"Mummy, mummy are you ok? Where's daddy? Why isn't daddy here?" she said between sobs.
"Honey, it's going to be alright..."I whisper, as tears came streaming down my face,"We're going to be alright...."
