Topic Ideas

For when you wish to talk but don't know where to start.

Ask me about my
- collection of mismatched dishes
- collection of assorted wigs
- collection of tarantulas
- personal mousery that I had
- love experiences with strangers
- quilling and other art forms
- progress on doing a handstand
- high scores on piano tiles

Let me educate you on
- tarantulas or solifugae
- quilling and how to

I do not do small talk.
Tell me about your day in detail, as if we are old friends. Tell me about your happiest and saddest moments. Just speak.

Words

Come and go, come and go.
Empty promises, empty potential.
I never stay, but always return.
Give me a reason to stay, I may.

First and foremost, I firmly believe that active conversation familiarizes you with someone better than reading any scripted summary of a person can, or a collection of basic details. A person cannot be accurately summarized, and every individual's impression of a person will vary, based on unique factors that can't be duplicated. Who I consider myself to be may be entirely unlike who you consider me to be, or anyone else. I implore you to make your own analysis, and I look forward to knowing what it might be. You can learn a lot about yourself through the eyes of another.

"Ever just scribble on a sidewalk until it's completely covered in a fine powder? A person is that layer of colorful powder, all scribbled into a fine and messy dust. An impression is when you take a hand and place it on the chalk. Some people just poke a finger, others smear palms, and some people roll in it. Every person comes away marked with colorful dust, but nobody looks the same. Even if the people rub the same amount of themselves in it, the colors mix differently. Some come away yellow, others orange, and even more couldn't care to get their hands dirty. You can always come back for more dust, or walk away and wash it off. Whoever chooses to wash it off still remembers what color their hands were." Spoken by one of my soul mates, her input on this concept.

There's something that I've always thought to be profoundly beautiful about strangers. About humanity, and the brief, fleeting connections that we share with one another. I find it difficult to stand in any crowd and not take a moment to simply slow down and become aware of every person around me, knowing that any one of these people could change my life, my perspectives, my direction. That every person has a bounty of experience and wisdom from their individual experiences that I could drink in and learn so much from. A life is all that anyone has, and to share that with another person is marvelous.

There's something particularly remarkable about strangers. I find it so simple to fall in love with someone for a moment, a day. The formal and attentive interactions that we have with someone that we know that we will likely never see again, that we aren't given the chance to become casual and neglectful with. Every moment is packed and powerful, and remains untainted and intact, when you aren't given the chance to let them become soiled and spoiled with time and future interaction. A moment preserved. The relationship between strangers is astounding. I find it so beautiful. A few words, a glance, even hours spent together that can leave a lasting impact.

The trouble with seeking those intimate shared moments with strangers, is that you don't know who may or may not be open to them - unless you wait for them to organically happen, which can be few and far between. Many of us are part of a social construct built on perceived boundaries in order to respect the other person, their privacy and space. But how do we know who we can speak to, without offending or making uncomfortable? I'm certainly not above sitting with a sign, indicating that I would love to sit and chat, or get a cup of coffee together. I'm also not above printing a shirt that states that I am very stranger-friendly and wouldn't mind if you stopped me to strike up a conversation about any and everything.
