Let me tell you a quick story. When I was about seven I walked into my dad watching a movie. The movie was called Aliens. I sat down and watched this movie. He was taping it. So I watched it again, and again, and again, and again. Then I found Alien 3. I watched that. I learned of Resurrection. I begged for my dad to rent it for me. About two years later I finally caught Alien on tv. This entire series was my childhood monster movies. I didn't fear them though. I always thought the Aliens were cool and the guns badass. Hicks was my favorite character.
Somewhere during this time I did see Predator, but, in all honestly, it didn't have the same effect on me that Alien did. But it was still a damn good movie, so rest easy Predator fans.
When I was about nine, I think, I found a game on a shelf. It was the Alien Versus Predator game for the PC. You have no idea how badly I wanted to play this game. Along comes Christmas and lo and behold, there it lay under the Christmas tree. My excitement was palpable. I put the cd in, installed the game and...it crashed. Yeah. My shitty computer couldn't run the game. Years went by of me trying again and again to play this game. Eventually I gave up and my knowledge of its existence was buried with the sands of time. It simply disappeared.
About a week ago I saw a clip for the new AVP game coming in February. To call it nostalgic wouldn't justify the feeling I had upon seeing my favorite titans of my youth clash once more. Recently I began to look around on the internet to see that my lost game had a sequel. AVP2 so I looked around and found a demo for it.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it was as if I were thrown into a time machine back to my younger self, but at the same time my older instincts were put chilled to the bone. This game was not only fantastic from what little I played, but the marine level brought some sort of primal fear I scarcely felt from a game. The predator level brought me a feeling of superiority as I hunted and picked off one marine after the other, like a wolf after rabbits. The Alien level gave me something in between. The thrill of being hunted with my need to hide lest I be blown to bits by the marine firing squad, and the pleasure of sneaking up on a lone soldier and biting his skull from his shoulders in a single movement.
I know for some of you, this game may either seem nostalgic as well, an old gem that you loved as much as I, or some piece of garbage you simply tossed away. Regardless I'd just like to know. What did I miss all these years? And who among you are just as thrilled to experience it all over again or for the first time next year?
