Prologue: Ruins of a Happy Home

There's sunlight streaming down on a dirt path that winds through tall, ancient trees. It falls on the backs of wild pokemon that run across the path every once in a while, only to run away when a luxurious car creeps on the dirt, silently approaching a place not very many people have seen.
At the end of the winding road is a large piece of property with a brick wall and iron gates, an inlaid-tile driveway bringing visitors to the front steps and the owners of the land to the large garage off to the side. Smack dab in the middle of the carefully clipped lawn, squatting like a large toad, was a mansion with gleaming windows and marble stairs, red carpets and satin drapes.
Two children played outside; a woman sat on a lawn chair with a glass of tea; a servant swept the walkway; and a shadow of a man watched them all from a window of a study no one was allowed to enter but himself.
“Ring around the rosie...”
The two children sang, the maid smiled, the woman clapped her hands and sang along with them, the car got closer to the gates...
“Pocket full of posies...”
The woman took her children's hands and joined them in their game, her daughter, the older, on her right, her son, the younger, on her left; the car came through the gates...
“Ashes, Ashes...”
The man in the window smirked, and the children continued their little game with their mother, while the windows of the car rolled down...
“We all fall DOWN!
There was a burst of gunfire. The maid screamed, the little girl uttered a choked cry before falling backwards onto the ground, blood gargling from her throat. Screaming in agony and fear, her mother picked up her brother and ran to the gates. The car followed, but realized that the maid had hit the button to close the gates. The woman slipped through easily, clutching her son to her chest.
Even then, she was wounded. Somehow, her little boy, only a mere four years old, miraculously had nothing but a tiny cut on his shoulder. He bawled while she ran for their lives, the car suddenly managing to screech through the gates, tearing off its mirrors and part of a door that had opened in order to let someone inside.
The woman hurried off the path into the dense under brush, running, running hard before collapsing of blood-loss, and she died looking into the little boy's eyes.
And as the child looked up, he saw a shadow crossing in front of him, and met the eyes of the man who had watched them from his window.
“Papa?”
The man raised his hand, holding a revolver that the boy recognized from their dinning-room mantle-piece.
“Pa-”
And there was a frightening 'BANG', and the air in front of him turned white...
And the boy having the dream gasped and sat up.
