Today my mom best friend gave me some stuff in a box and in that box was a piece of wood that looked like the back of a bird house. It's a clean untreated piece of wood but when I put it on the table my cat started to sniff it and then...she got high. She was drooling and rolling around and kinda got a bit excited, she was even licking and chewing it. When I took it away she kept looking at it like she wanted more. My mom said she think it's cedar and it apparently has the same effect as catnip. We don't know how she behaves with catnip cause we never gave her any.
>Does anyone know what wood does that to a cat?
>Should I be worried about the effects on her?

She is also a first time mom. Her babies are 2 weeks old. The first week, she did great. This week I'm not so sure, our male cat tried to mount her again so we had to lock her up instead of letting her roam free. Now she will not nurse in front of me like she did before and anytime I go in there she seems to neglect the kittens even when it seems they are hungry. She would rather rub up against me. Today one of the kittens started licking my finger.
>Is that normal for a 2 week old kitten?
>How can I tell if she is nursing them enough?
>should I be worried about the effects of the wood on the kittens?

I can't tell if Casey(finger licker) is lethargic or just has a calm disposition like his dad. He and the rest seem to be healthy. Eyes are bright and they're crawling around, the other 2 seem to be playing already. Casey was the largest born but now seems to be the smallest.
>Should I be worried about that?

I'd be willing to bet the wood was cedar. I dont think its harmful to cats. Cats are really attracted to cedar b/c of the unsual smell.

You may want to take the mommy cat and her babies to get checked out out the vet. The kittens will try to lick your fingers, especially if they want to nurse more , or if you have somthing they can smell on your hands.
Its pretty common to have a runt or tiny kitten in a litter. You can also help feed the babies with a nursing bottle, Its important that you only use kitten milk mix( get from pet store)Or goats milk,(some grocery stores) but you have to dilute it with water. Any other milk, especially cow milk can hurt or kill them.

The mommy cat wants your extra attention since she has her babies taking all her time from you. Give her as much attention as you can! It probley a good idea to get them all the the vet to be checked out as soon as possible. If money is tight right now I would at least call a vet and try to talk to a vet tech, they are really smart and usually give free advice.
They can tell you if somthing may be wrong. Its definatly a good time to get your boy cat neutered, or get the mommy cat into be spayed as soon as they say its ok, since shes nursing. She CAN get pregnet again!!!!

Good luck, and feel free to PM me if I can help!

Have there been any changes?

Yes and thanks for the reply, I guess I was just being a worry wart, The kittens are ok and they are starting to eat solids now. The wood had no ill effects and the daddy cat met the babies today, he was great with them. He acted as if he knew them forever and was acting very motherly towards them. He cleaned them, kept them from wandering too far and responded whenever the babies cried. But we had to take them away when he started to play with them, useing his claws. heart
