The Black Hats: New Recruits
Chapter 1
Kavid followed the cloaked man though the side streets. Finally, the moment he had been waiting for. For years he had yearned to be proven worthy of the title. A Black Hat. The Black Hats were one of the most prestigious underground organizations on the continent, and now they had called him in. -This is your big chance, don't mess it up- Kavid said to himself. "Enter." the large man said. He held open the door, and Kavid entered the dimly lit room. There was only a table and two chairs, one of which was occupied. "Please, sit down." The other man said pleasantly. "Allow me to introduce myself, I am the Black Hat." Kavid almost fainted. The Black Hat, THE Black Hat? Had come to see him personally? It was too much! This man was a living legend, a god among thieves! He was a brilliant mastermind! He was shorter than Kavid had pictured him..... No matter, size doesn't make the man. Kavid realized that The Black Hat was talking, and he snapped back to reality. "The Hats have been watching you're progress with great interest Kavid." he was saying. "If you will take the offer, we would like you to become one of our ranks. Do you accept?" "Yes! I mean, I suppose. Where would I be staying?" "You will have room and board at the Hat's main building here in London. You'll have to share with a few roomies, but after all, you will be an entrance level recruit. But I am sure that you will prove yourself worthy of gaining ranks within the Black Hat's. I trust this is acceptable?" "Oh yes Mr. Black Hat, sir...." "Just call me Captain, everybody does." "Yes sir." "Bluto?" the Black Hat called. The large man at the door poked his head in. "Yes Captain?" "Escort Mr. Kavid to his quarters, I have to attend another interview with one of Kavid’s roommates. "Yes Captian. You, come with me." Kavid followed Bluto out again. He looked over his shoulder, but the Black Hat, the Captian, was gone. "So Bluto, how long have you been a hat?" Kavid asked. Bluto said nothing. "Any family? A girl maybe?" Again, silence. "I see... That's very interesting. Do you know who my roommates are going to be?" "There were four new recruits besides yourself. The Captain is going to see the last recruit now. One is 16 like you, your roommate. There is a girl who is 15, and your other roommate is 12." "12? But I waited years to become a-" "Do not think you are so special, Mr. Kavid." Bluto growled. "Your talents have caught the attention on the Hat's just like everyone who is a member. You are no different than any other thief. You are scum, you are dirt. If you want to prove yourself, do something right. Gaining ranks will be reward enough." Kavid was silent. -Well,- He supposed. -I knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park...- He turned to Bluto. "Well, thanks for the advice. Although, I would recommend some work on your people skills." Bluto stopped and turned on him. "Shut up you little maggot. I don't like you. I don't want to hear you talk to me unless you're responding to an order. Is that clear?" "Yes Bluto..." Kavid mumbled. "What?" "Yes, sir!" "That's better." -Great,- Kavid thought. -20 minutes on the job, and the big scary dude already wants to gut me like a fish. Well like they say in the Black Hats; If somebody's after you, you did a good job. I just wish it weren't Bluto.-
The Black Hat watched Bluto take the new recruit down the street from a rooftop. He smiled inwardly. They would make a good team, he thought. The elder’s experience and sternness, combined with the younger’s optimism, and attitude. Together they could become a formidable team. The Black Hat Stood. He pulled the brim of his trademark hat down low on his brow, and wrapped his cloak around his thin but sturdy shoulders. Then he disappeared into the twilight that was setting on the city. Flitting quickly from rooftop to rooftop, he was soon deep within the heart of the city. He dropped quietly into an alley, stood and brushed himself off, and turned a corner out into the street. The Black Hat glanced up at the sign above the door, and then entered the bar. This was one of his preferred places to conduct business, seeing as he people here would never give you a second glance, even if you were leading the King himself through at knife point. He grabbed a stool at the bar, and ordered a draft. As the bartender passed him the brew, he glanced out at the crowd of grizzled patrons, trying to locate his next subject. Not seeing anyone resembling the description he had received, he turned back to the counter, and went over the day’s events as he cradled his beer mug. First there was Yath, he was a bit egotistical, but a good fighter. There was the 12-year-old, Alex. There was the girl, Pilot, and of course, Kavid. Quite the addition to the crew. They had all accepted almost immediately, but somehow The Hat didn’t think they understood what they were getting in to. Especially now, when a few of there best rogues and scouts had been killed, being a Hat was more dangerous than ever. His thoughts were interrupted by a tap on his shoulder. He turned around to see a young women standing there, looked as if she wanted something. “I’m sorry miss, but I don’t need any company tonight.” The women gave him a disgusted look. “Please, I’m looking for someone who calls himself the Black Hat.” His eyes widened. “You’re the one? Shh, they’ll here you.” The Hat pulled her into a stool next to his. “Yes, I am The Black Hat, and you are?” “Christina, and I expected you to be older.” It was true. While this young women looked no older than 18, The Hat himself was only 19. By far the youngest captain the Black Hats had ever seen. He hadn’t exactly asked for the job either. He was declared the prodigy of the last Hat soon after he had joined. When his predecessor was on his death bed, he had passed the title on. The Black Hat had just been Jack Sprat back then. He was shocked that he had been chosen as the new Hat. There were countless who were older, more experienced, like Bluto. But he didn’t have a choice. Jack Sprat had become the Captain, the Black Hat. “Um, hello?”Christina said. The Black Hat snapped back into focus. “Sorry, what?” “Do you always zone out like that?” she asked. “Maybe. But that doesn’t matter. You’re here because we have extended an invitation for you to join the Hats...” “Because I’m just that good.” Christina interjected. “Don’t get too cocky now. In the field, that’s a dangerous emotion.” “Yeah, ok. Well, you defiantly sound like an old geezer. So, am I in?” The Hat sighed. “Yes.” He drained the rest of his beer in a few gulps. He wiped his mouth. “If you’ll follow me, I’ll show you your new room.”
At the base, which was actually a group of apartment buildings that appeared to be abandoned, Kavid was settling into his room. Since status was expressed in how far away you were from the bottom floor, (which included the kitchens, and all recreational activities) Kavid’s shared room was on the third and top floor. He was laying in the bed he had chosen, the bottom of one of the bunk beds in the room. Even though he had heard a little about them from Bluto, he hadn’t caught any sight of his roommates. Perhaps he was the first one picked. Maybe that means he was the most skilled out of the three of them. Kavid caught himself before his thought process got the best of him. Bluto’s words were still echoing in his head. “You are no different than any of the other people here.” he had said. “You have to prove yourself.” And as much as Kavid was put off by the large man’s attitude, he had to agree. If anything, trying to befriend his roommates would probably be the most beneficial thing to do. Kavid’s thoughts were interrupted once again by the door slamming open. The man standing there was about his height, but much more stocky. Strapped to his back was a long scabbard, which presumably held a sword. He was wearing a white tee shirt with a leather jacket that looked to be strait out of the middle ages. His pants looked the same. “Why are you on my bed?” he asked darkly. “What are you talking about? I was here-” “First? I don’t think so. I’ve been here for three days. That’s because I obviously have been the most impressive.” Kavid considered pointing out that his attitude wasn’t desirable according to Bluto, but he decided against it. “If this is your bed, then where is all your stuff?” he asked instead. “I just came with the cloths on my back.” the husky guy said. He cracked a smile. “Nah, I’m just kidding. That ain’t my bed. I’m more of a top bunk type of person.” He walked over to Kavid, and extended his hand. “Name’s Yath, guess we’re roomies.” Kavid took his hand and shook it. “Kavid.” he said. “Nice attitude you got there.” “Oh, you like it?” Yath asked.”Well, I figure that if I ever need to out-tough someone, I should work on my persona, right?” “I guess.” Kavid said. “So there’s the two of us in here, and I heard there’s another....” “Oh, the kid?” Yath asked. “Strange little guy. Keeps to himself. Barely speaks a word. I can’t even figure out what he did to get in anyway.” “Okay, well....” “I’m hungry.” Yath said suddenly. “Let’s go get something to eat, huh?”
Seeing as Yath had been there longer than he had, Kavid let his new roommate lead the way. As they trekked down the seemingly endless hallways, Yath gave a nod of greeting or a hello to every one they passed. “Do you really know all these people?” Kavid whispered. “Not a one. The only people I would recognize are Eva, the chick who brought me here, and the Black Hat himself. But I figure if I acknowledge everybody, somebody’s got to respond back, right?” “I suppose...” Kavid said. In truth, he had stopped listening after Yath has mentioned he had met the Black Hat. Maybe it wasn’t as special as occasion as Kavid had made it out to be. He probably met all the new recruits. Well, Bluto was starting to have more of a point with each passing hour. He really was nothing special. -Not yet, at least.- He told himself. He watched as Yath tried vainly to attract attention from the others Hats. Those who looked at him shook their heads as he passed, and laughed when he wasn’t looking, -Poor kid, he has no idea.- Kavid shook his head. “And here we are, the mess hall!” Yath announced, as if he had just proved that Atlantis did in fact exist, and that it was inhabited by octopus people, not fish people as one would normally think. “Well, it certainly is a mess.” Kavid said. Yath laughed. “I like you kid, what’s your name again?” “Kavid, and I’m the same age as you.” “I know, but kid is a term of endearment given to the newbies by the older members.” Yath explained. “So you think that calling me kid will make you fit in more with the higher ranks?” “You’re smart kid, that’s what I like about you. Now, let’s go eat.”

Chapter 2
After they ate, Kavid and Yath began their walk back to the room. Kavid was already getting tired of this climb, and he had only made it twice. Gaining ranks felt even more appealing with each aching step up the staircase. Kavid ignored the looks of the other members as he tried to engage Yath in conversation. For a man of so many words, he seemed to have little to say about himself. He also punctured every sentence wit a ‘Hey”, or ‘How’s it goin’?’ To every one they passed. “So what did you, hey! Did you say you, sup? You did to get noticed?” Yath asked. “Well, actually, I-” “Oh, that’s cool, hey, man.” Yath said. “But I didn’t..... never mind.” Kavid shook his head, this would take some getting used to. Kavid walked in silence until the reached the third floor. He followed Yath down the hallway back towards their room. Once they finally reached it, they saw that someone was poking their head in. “Hey!” barked Yath. Both Kavid and the person looking in jumped. “I’m sorry.” the person said, turning around. “I’m-” “A girl.” Yath interjected. “Yes.” The girl said. “I am. I’m boarding in the room next to you guys. Supposedly I have a roommate, but I haven’t seen her yet. Oh, my name’s Pilot, Pilot Donavan.” “I’m Yath, just Yath.” “I’m sure you are....” Pilot trailed off. “And who are you?” she asked Kavid. “I’m Kavid, nice to meet you Pilot.” “Alright, kid, I’m just gonna leave you be now, k? Catch some shuteye.” As he left he turned to Pilot. “Nice kid really, but hasn’t got a clue what’s goin’ on.” When Yath had closed the door behind him, Pilot whispered. “Is he always like that?” “As far as I know.” Kavid said. “Nice kid though.” He and Pilot laughed softly. “Well, he’s right you know.” Pilot said. “We really should be getting to sleep, training’s first thing in the morning.” “What are we going to do?” Kavid asked. “We’ll find out tomorrow.” Pilot said. “See you in the morning.” “Right, nice to meet you Pilot.” “You too, Kavid.”
The next morning, Kavid was woken up by someone shaking him. “Come on kid!” Yath said. “We’re gonna be late!” Kavid quickly changed, and ran after Yath downstairs. As he rushed down the hallway, none of the doors were open, and noone was out like they had been last night. Kavid wondered what time it could be. He skidded to a halt in front of a window on the landing. He lifted one of the curtains and peered outside. The buildings were all dark, and the sky was tinged faintly red. It couldn’t have been earlier than 5:30 in the morning. Kavid groaned inwardly, and took off again. He kept an eye on Yath’s retreating form in front of him. Kavid had to keep him in sight, or else he would be lost. Kavid barreled around another corner, and crashed into Yath at full speed. “Why the hell did you stop?” Kavid demanded. “Shhhh!” Yath hissed, holding up a finger. “We’re right next to the training room’s door. It’s already started.” “So then why didn’t you go in?” Kavid hisssed. Yath shook his head. “Haven’t you ever been to school or anything?” he asked. “Yeah, a while ago....” Kavid mumbled. “Then you know that being late means trouble, especially in here. Other Hats wouldn’t think twice about doing serious damage to make an example.” Yath said darkly. “They really would do stuff like that?” Kavid asked. “You want to take that chance?” Yath retorted. “Fine. But what do we do?” “I’m trying to figure that out. Oh! How about, no...” Yath trailed off. “I’ve got an idea.” Kavid said. “Yeah, yeah, whatever.” “No, listen, here’s what we do....”
Bluto paced back and forth across the training room floor. He had been put in charge of the recruit training unit. “Where are they?” he growled. “Calm down Bluto.” said Eva, the person who had escorted Yath to his meeting. “Hey, if I have to suffer through being these wingnut’s mentor, the least they could do is show up on time.” “I’m mentoring too.” Eva reminded him. “And so are Simian and Thatch.” “Yeah, but you guys don’t have my kid. Little twerp won’t shut up! And he has and attitude.” “Oh no, Bluto’s scared by a smart mouth kid.” Thatch joked. “Oh, shut up. Where the hell are they?” Pilot watched the conversation with minor interest. So far, she had been the only one who had shown up. It was all very boring. She was itching to get started, but they all had to wait until the others got here. Her eyes lazily scanned the training room’s walls. The only indication they were in a room at all were the weapons rack on the far wall, opposite the door, the door itself, and the list of hours hanging on the wall next to it. As stared blankly at the door, something caught her eye. A hand waving, beckoning her over. Kavid’s head popped up briefly on the other side of the glass pane in the door, and he waved his hand more urgently. Pilot pointed at herself and quietly mouthed the word ‘Me?’. Kavid nodded vigorously. Bluto turned his head suddenly to look at the door. Kavid disappeared from sight, and then came back a second later when Bluto’s head was turned back. Pilot got casually got to her feet, and started to amble slowly towards the door. She paused at the hours chart, pretending to gaze at it, while sneaking a last look at the mentors. She then walked the last few feet to the door, and opened it a crack. “What are you doing?” She asked in a hissing whisper. “Hey, baby, do us a-” She heard Yath’s voice begin. There was a smacking sound, and Yath cursed. Kavid’s voice continued. “We kinda overslept.” He said. “No really?” Pilot said sarcastically. “Yeah, well, do you think you could help us out?” Kavid asked. “What do you-?” Pilot lowered her voice. “What do you want me to do?” “Just keep their attention away from the door for awhile.” “Doing what?” “I don’t know, improvise.” Pilot sighed. “Fine, but you owe me.” “Right, we do. Now go, improvise!” Pilot took a deep breath, and turned around. She walked across the large room to the weapon rack. She gave it an overview, and picked up a rather ornate looking rapier. She carried it over to the group of mentor, making sure that she was facing the door, so their backs would be to it. She cleared her throat. “Um, what is this called?” she asked in her best naive voice. Bluto and the others turned around to see who was talking. Pilot suppressed a gulp. “I mean, I know it’s some type of sword, but, what kind exactly?” she asked. “That’s a rapier.” Bluto said. “It’s a very flexible and.....” Pilot watched as the door opened, and Kavid and Yath Snuck through, crouched low. It looked as though they were heading towards the weapon rack. “What are they doing?” she whispered. “What did you say?” Eva asked. “Uh.... what.... What is the proper form for a sword like this? I mean, do you act like you’re fencing? Or...?” “Well, you see Pilot....” Eva began. Bluto nodded along with Eva’s explanation of proper techniques. Pilot was only half listening. Kavid and Yath were almost at the weapon rack now. She still had no idea what they were planning to do. They were about to pick up some weapons when Bluto interrupted Eva. “Eva, I know our charges aren’t trying to sneak in to training late.” Bluto turned around and glared at Yath and Kavid, who were currently frozen on the spot. Yath recovered first. “No, sir. We were just uh...” Kavid jumped in, “We had come early to try out some of the weapons. We uh...” Yath picked up again, “We just were practicing elsewhere, and didn’t want to disturb your demonstration for Pilot by coming back in to return the weapons we had borrowed.” He flashed Bluto a smile, which quickly fizzled under the large man’s glare. “Oh?” Bluto asked. “What weapons did you try out?” he asked innocently. Kavid and Yath looked down at the weapons they were about to pick up. “I was going to use... this spiked ball and chain thing.” Kavid said, picking up the flail. “And I was attempting to master....” Yath looked to see what his hand was closest to. “The subtle assassination techniques of using the small but deadly pellet gun!” He finished, brandishing the six inch long straw. Pilot ran her hand down her face, shaking her head. Bluto smiled. “Perhaps you could show us what you learned?” he said. “Oh, sure, uh...” Yath blew hard on the little straw. Nothing happened. “It must be stuck, hold on.” He sucked back, and the stone inside the straw shot down his throat. Yath started to gag. “Uh, you, see, Yath is demonstrating what the victims of this weapon look like...” Kavid said, trying to salvage the quickly sinking situation, “What about you, Kavid?” Bluto asked. “Oh, yeah. Well, this is the uh, windmill technique I was working on.” Kavid took the flail’s handle in one hand, and he began to swing it in large circles, like he was winding up for a pitch. After about five swings, Kavid lost control of the weapon, and it flew out of his hand, strait towards Bluto. Without a flinch, Bluto shot his hand out, and grabbed the flail by its handle, stopping the spiked head from hitting his face by inches. Kavid stood there sheepishly, not saying anything. Yath finally stopped choking, and stood up. “I told you Kavid, counterclockwise!” “Shut up Yath.” Kavid hissed. “For once, I agree. Shut up.” Bluto said. “Now, I’m not going to ask why you made us witnesses to this horrible circus act gone wrong, I’m just going to skip right to the punishment.” Bluto smiled. “Fifty pushups, now.” “Bluto...” Eva warned. “Fine, twenty. Because this is a first offence, and because I’m too tired to argue.” Kavid sighed, and he and Yath dropped to the floor to start their pushups. 20 arm aching presses later, they stood, breathing hard. “We really need to get you in shape.” Bluto mused. “Now, before we begin-” “Sorry, did I miss something?” A voice asked. It was a girl, with reddish down to about her shoulders. Her eyes were grey, but they seemed to catch the light differently, making one look blue, and the other green.. She stood looking at Bluto as if she was extremely bored. “No, just in time. We were doing introductions.” Bluto said. “What?” Kavid blurted out. “How come she doesn’t get punished?” Bluto rounded on Kavid. “Because she’s not my charge, that’s why.” “What about me?” Yath asked. “Boy, you choked on a straw.” Bluto said. Pilot snickered, and Yath shot her a look. She covered her mouth and tried to look sorry. “Now, as I was saying, introductions. You’ve all met knucklehead one and two over here.” he said, gesturing to Kavid and Yath. “This here is Pilot.” Bluto said, gesturing behind him. “And our late arrival is...?” “Christina, but you can call me Chris.” “Right. And we are people with nothing better to do, so we were chosen to be your mentors.” Bluto finished. Eva stepped forward, “Don’t mind him, he’s always a mess without coffee. Let me introduce us better, shall I? My name is Eva, and I am Yath’s mentor. And the other’s are Simian, Thatch, and the Big Blue.” “Ah, I see where the nickname comes from, Simian.” Yath said, addressing Bluto. One of the other women stepped forward. “Name’s Monica Simman. My friends call me Simian.” A look of pain crossed Yath’s face. He took Simian’s hand and shook it. “Sorry.” He said to Bluto, and backed away slowly. “I’m Thatch.” The third women said. “I’m Pilot’s mentor.” “And I am Bluto.” he stared pointedly at Yath. Yath cringed. “And if you ever try to call me Big Blue, it’ll be your head. My charge is little windmill over here.” “Bluto.” Eva said. Bluto sighed. “His name is Kavid. Okay, everybody good, everyone happy?” Bluto looked around. “Then savor this moment, because for the next few weeks, all you’re gonna feel is pain, bruises, and my foot in your a** if you’re late again, got that?” he asked Kavid and Yath. “Yes sir.” they mumbled. “Okay, then let’s get started!” Eva said. The first weapon that they would be practicing with was the boa staff. It was the basic starting weapon. Since the most common weapon used was the sword, they could practices techniques without causing harm to their sparring partners. They were split off into pairs, Kavid and Yath, and Pilot and Chris. The mentors oversaw the battles, looking at their form, style, and general technique. This first match was to see where they fell skill level wise, and to see what their specific training would have to focus more on. Yath was defiantly more aggressive, but he was slower than Kavid. With Kavid being almost constantly on defense, they were an even match. Pilot and Chris were more clumsy, seeing as they didn’t prefer swords. Once they all began to get into a pattern of fighting, Bluto stopped them with a wave of his hand. All were both breathing hard. “Okay, we now have a pretty good idea of where you stand. Now, before we break off into individuals, are there any questions? No? Good-” “I have a question.” Kavid said. Bluto gritted his teeth. “What is it?” “If the Black Hats are primarily thieves, where are we practicing swordsmanship and stuff?” “Because,” Bluto said. “Stealing will come with time. You need these skills now for your first few missions where you’ll almost certainly mess up, and need to fight your way out.” “Oh, okay. I guess that makes sense.” Kavid mused. “Okay, everybody done with questions? Good, now, go with you’re mentor, and do private training. Let them go at noon unless they’ve been a pain.” The new recruits split off with their mentors, and each went to a different corner of the large room. Kavid watched them go, nervous for what Bluto had in mind for him. “So, what are we working on today?” Kavid asked in what he hoped was a cheery voice. “Pushups.” Bluto said. Kavid stopped himself from groaning. “How many?” Bluto smiled. “Until I say stop.”

Chapter 3 The pushups only went to fifty, but Kavid was far from done. Next came crunches, and various stretches that lasted close to a hour and a half. Kavid was pouring with sweat, and his body ached. Everyone else was going over fighting techniques, or weapon styles. Chris was even learning how to do midair somersaults. Now that was useful. “When do we get to do actual training?” he asked Bluto. “This is actual training.” he answered. “No it’s not!” Kavid retorted angrily. “You’re just making me do stupid stretches all day! When are we going to learn about fighting or something?” “We will when you’re ready.” Bluto answered. “I am ready!” “Not according to me.” Bluto said. “I’ll never be ready according to you!” Kavid exclaimed. Bluto shrugged. “Maybe, you’ll just have to take that risk.” “I’m not gonna just sit here and do nothing!” “You keep that up, and I’ll just give you something to stay after for.” “What is this school?” Kavid asked angrily. “What could you possibly make me do?”
“Dude, I can’t believe he’s making you clean all the windows here.” Yath said. “Oh, it’s only the first floor.” Kavid did in an impersonation of Bluto. “Just be happy I didn’t give you more.” “Well, I would help you out, but I don’t want to coss that guy again.” “Thanks Yath, you’re a real pal.” Kavid said sarcastically. “No problem, want me to get you something from the mess hall?” Yath asked. “No, thanks.” “Well, catch you later man.” Kavid steamed as he scrubbed the windows. They weren’t getting any cleaner, evem with all the soap he was using. Kavid never noticed it until now, but the windows here were really high in the wall. He had to stand on his toes to get the tops, Bluto hadn’t given him a stool or anything. “Circles, Kavid.” A voice said. “Captain, I-” The Black Hat smiled. “Yath said you’d be here.” “Yeah, Bluto’s such a jerk. I just wanna.....” Kavid trailed off. “Sorry, I shouldn’t be talking about superiors like that.” “Yeah, probably not, but I won’t tell anybody.” the Hat said. He took a bite of his apple. “So Bluto being a nuisance, is he?” “I’ll say.” “Well, give the man a break, this is no easier for him. Besides, I’m sure he knows what he’s doing.” “How do you know?” Kavid asked. “Bluto was my mentor too, you know.” the Hat mused. “He’s that old?” Kavid asked. “Now is that an insult to me or him?” the Hat laughed. “Nah, he’s not that old. After all, I’m only 19.” “Really? I always though you were older.” Kavid said. “Yeah, everyone says that. Truth is I’ve only been the Black Hat for about a year and a half now.” “Only that long?” “Yeah, before that, I was just Jack Sprat. Didn’t have a care in the world. Now I have all this responsibility and stuff. I never wanted it.” “Why are you the Hat then?” “The old Hat, man named Kidson, he died. Wnted me to be the new Black Hat. Not like I could have turned him down.” “Yeah, I guess.” Kavid said thoughtfully. “You ever miss being Jack Sprat?” “Well, I still am.” The Hat reminded him, “But yes, every day.” The Hat stood and stretched. “As you were, Kavid. Remember, circles. And give Bluto a chance. It may not seem like it, but he knows exactly what he’s doing.” With a wink, The Black Hat left Kavid to his window wiping. Kavid sighed, and started up again, even though his arms felt like they were about to fall off. Maybe the Hat was right. Maybe Bluto did know what he was doing. That didn’t mean he couldn’t still hate him for it. Late that night, Kavid dragged himself up the stairs up his room. He opened the door, and then fell on his bed with an exhausted sigh. Yath was nowhere to be seen, but there was a little kid sitting on the single bed. He had unusually silvery white hair, and large amber eyes. He seemed to be looking something at his lap. It was almost as if he hadn’t seen Kavid came in. “Hey.” Kavid said. The boy looked up, and stared at him for a moment before saying, “Hello.” “You have a name kid?” He nodded. “I’m Alex.” “I’m Kavid.” Since Alex didn’t seem like he was about to speak, Kavid continued. “So, uh, you weren’t at training today.” “No, I wasn’t.” Alex didn’t seem to be much of a talker, so Kavid tried to prompt him. “So, why weren’t you at training today?” “I was doing some things with the Black Hat.” “Like what?” “Gathering my stuff.” Alex said. “Like this.” he showed Kavid the object he had been looking at when Kavid had come in. “A picture frame?” “Yes.” “Who’s that a picture of?” Kavid asked. “A friend.” “Oh. So, how did you get into the Hats?” “I have talents.” Alex said, putting the picture frame on the night stand next to his bed. “Really, what can you do?” Kavid asked. “I’d rather not look at it, goodnight.” Alex turned over on top of his bed. Obviously he didn’t want to talk about how he got into the Hats. Well, that was his decision. Kavid looked at the picture on Alex’s night stand. It was a picture of a boy, and a girl. She was taller than the boy by a lot, older too. She looked to be about Kavid’s age. It took him a moment to realize it, but the boy was Alex. He just had brown hair. “Alex?” Kavid asked. Alex was silent. “Where’s your friend?” he asked. “We got separated, we haven’t seen each other in months.” Alex said. “How did your hair get turned white like that?” Kavid asked. Alex didn’t respond. Kavid shook his head. Weird kid. Kavid really wanted to know more about him, and about that girl in the picture. Oh well, if Alex wanted to talk, he would. Kavid rolled over and groaned. All he needed to worry about right now was trying to get to training on time tomorrow morning, and to not let Bluto get to him.
Kavid woke up bright and early, not wanting to get in trouble again. His bones ached, and he felt as if his muscles were on fire. Still, he got up and was downstairs a full half hour before training started. He spent his time eating breakfast, and than went into the training room and stretched, not willing to be caught off guard again. One by one, the others filtered in, first Pilot and Chris, then Alex, and finally Yath. They all looked to be still sleeping, and noone spoke as they waited for their mentors to arrive. At exactly 5:30, Bluto, Eva, Thatch, and Simian entered the training room. “Ah, good to see you’re all on time today.” Bluto said. “As you were, go work with your mentors.” Kavid sat and watched as the others left. Alex went with Yath and Eva. Once again, he was alone, the only one subject to Bluto’s torment. “On your feet.” Bluto said. “I want you to do five laps around this room.” “What? I was the first one here this morning!” Bluto smiled. “And thirty pushups afterwards.” “What is your problem?” Kavid demanded. “Do you want to make it forty?” Bluto asked. Kavid sighed, and started off jogging around the training room. He caught Yath’s eye as he passed his corner, and Yath shook his head. Kavid stared strait ahead, and kept going. Five laps later, he stopped. Without a word, he got to his knees, and began to do the pushups. When he was done, Kavid was sweating freely. He lay down with his hands behind his head. Once he caught his breath, he sat up and asked, “So what now?” “Again.” Bluto said. “What? I’m still exhausted from yesterday!” Kavid exclaimed. “This is training, so why won’t you train me?” “I am training you.” Bluto said calmly. “No you’re not!” Kavid yelled. “You’re just working me until I collapse!” “Do you want to make it ten laps?” Bluto asked. “You said it yourself, fighting skills are important. How am I supposed to do anything like that if you won’t teach me?!” “Fifteen!” Bluto said. The others had stopped their exercises to watch the shouting match. “Why can’t you be normal like everyone else here?” Kavid asked. “Twenty laps!” Bluto shouted. “Why won’t you answer me?” Kavid shouted back. “Thirty!” “Is it because you can’t actually teach me anything, you’re just waiting until I crap out and quit?” “Fifty laps! And you’re not leaving until every last one is completed!” Bluto bellowed. The two glared at each other for almost a minute. Without a word, Kavid started to jog again. Bluto watched his retreating form, and shook his head. The others went back to their workouts. Around and around Kavid went, steaming the entire way. He didn’t stop once, he wouldn’t give Bluto the satisfaction of seeing him weak. As the day wore on, the shadows shortened, and then began tp get longer again. The gym was empty of all but Kavid running the room’s perimeter, and Bluto watching him. “Okay, that’s enough.” Bluto finally said. “Can I go now?” Kavid spat bitterly. “One more thing.” Bluto said. “Tonight, I want you to scrape the paint of all the banners in this building.” Kavid twitched. Barely controling his anger, he asked, “Any particular way you would like that done?” “Yes, I’ll make it easier for you, start at the bottom, and scrap up each banner. That way when you’re done, you’ll be at your room.” “You’re so kind.” Kavid said sarcastically.
Eight banisters later, Kavid crawled into bed exhausted and sore for the second night in a row. Alex was nowhere to be seen, but Yath was sitting on his bed, polishing his sword. When he saw Kavid come in, Yath sheathed his weapon, and swung down off his bunk ti sit on Alex’s bed. “Tough day, huh?” He asked. Kavid groaned as he sat down slowly. “The man has it out for me. ‘Scrape every banister in this building, and you’ll end at your room.’ Isn’t that nice?” Kavid tried to laugh, but it came out as a wheezing cough. “I’ll tell you, really works out the arms though. I swear my shoulder popped out of the socket from all that thrusting,” Yath hid a smile. “Shut up!” Kavid said, laughing, And through a pillow at him. “You know what though? I’m not gonna let him get the satisfaction of seeing me like this, oh no. You’re looking at the the biggest hard-a** in all Black Hats history.” “Well, ‘cept maybe Bluto.” Yath said. “Yeah, accept him. Night Yath, see you at training.” “Night.”
The next day was the same. Kavid was early, and he still did laps and pushups. He had to clean windows in the next building after practice. The next day he did the banisters in that building. Day after day, it was the same thing. Up early, Bluto running him ragged, and then some chore before getting back to the room late at night. Sometimes he had to wash dishes in the kitchen. The next few days he painted the banisters he had scraped. “Top down.” Bluto reminded him. “The opposite of the way you scraped.” Kavid wouldn’t say a word, just do what Bluto told him. Let him try to break me! He thought. So the days became weeks, and the weeks became fortnights, and the fortnights became months. The same thing every day. Yath, Pilot, and even Chris tried to offer their sympathies, but Kavid assured them there was nothing to it. So the pattern continued. Although Kavid wouldn’t admit it, Bluto was getting to him. Every day, a piece of his composure was chipped away. It wouldn’t be much longer until he snapped. And one day two and a half months later, he did. “Okay, that’s it.” Kavid said one morning when Bluto told him to run laps again. “I’m sorry?” “What are you trying to accomplish?” Kavid asked. “I mean, it’s obvious you don’t like me, but to do this to someone, that’s just not right!” “It’s for your own good.” Bluto said. “My own good? How is this for my own good, I want to fight!” “If it’s a fight you want, then it’s a fight you’ll get.” Without warning, Bluto charged and Kavid. Kavid barely leaped out of the way in time. Almost before he could turn around, Bluto was on top of him. Kavid rolled out of the way, and fell into a crouch. Bluto aimed a punch strait at his face, and without thinking, Kavid blocked it. He had a flashback to cleaning the windows, circles..... Another punch came, low this time. Kavid thrust his hand out the same way he had painted the banisters. Another punch from the side, and Kavid blocked this one as well. It was just like moving the dishes into the rinse sink.... Again and again, Bluto’s blows became faster and faster, and Kavid repelled them all. Slowly, Kavid began to get a firmer footing. He stood taller, and began to throw some punches of his own. Suddenly having to exert himself to close the stubborn silverware drawer became a good thing. Back and forth they moved, neither slowing down or backing off. All that running had really worked up his stamina. The others moved out of the way as Kavid and Bluto battled with their fists across the floor. Finally, Kavid’s defense slipped, and Bluto’s fist got though right to Kavid stomach. But the blow never came. Bluto had stopped his had an inch from Kavid. They both stood still, breathing hard. Bluto smiled. “Not quite, but very good. Tomorrow we start weapon training.”
“That was amazing!” Pilot exclaimed as they left for the mess hall. “You were all sorts of crazy, dude!” Yath said. “Good job.” Chris said. “Who knew that all that useless crap he made you did actually did something?” “He was right, Bluto did know what he was doing.” Kavid murmured. “Who was right?” Kavid smiled. “It doesn’t matter, come on guys, let’s get something to eat!” They all went to the mess hall, laughing and talking, like they had been old friends for ages. Kavid saw Alex walk by himself towards the stairs. Kavid jogged over to him. “Alex, where you going?” he asked. “To the room.” Alex said. “Come and sit with us.” “Why?” “Cause it’ll be fun.” “You don’t think I’m weird?” Alex asked him. “Dude, have you seen Yath?” Kavid laughed. Alex cracked a smile. “Come on, it’ll be fun.” Kavid assured the small boy. “Okay, sure.” Kavid and Alex sat down at the table with the rest of the recruits. The stayed and talked into the late hours of the night. It was if a test had been passed, they were all Black Hats, and they were all friends. Bluto watched them from the corner. Eva came up behind him. “Well, you never cease to surprise me.” she said. “I knew he had it in him.” Bluto said. “I think that time’s getting closer to their first mission.” Eva said. “Me too.” Bluto agreed. “Me too.

Chapter 4
Over the next week, Kavid began to learn the techniques and forms that everyone else had learned over the last few months. He was a natural. He quickly mastered every odd form or rarely used technique that Bluto threw at him. Within two weeks, Kavid had all but mastered what it had took the others months to learn. However, he was still behind. During the first few days of his form training, everyone else had chosen their real weapons for close combat. Yath of course chose the sword that he always carried around with him. It was a beautifully crafted long sword, with a flawless blade, ornate hilt with a red jewel set in the center of it. Pilot chose a belt of daggers, and a short bow with a quiver of arrows. Chris had two long jagged edged daggers of her own, and she also took a short sword. All Alex took was a small knife.
“Why did you choose that?” Kavid had asked him. “Because,” Alex explained. “My, uh, abilities are sufficient enough that I don’t really need a weapon.” “You know, you never actually told me what your ‘abilities’ were.” Kavid said. “We’ll you’ll find out on our first mission then, huh?”
Now it was Kavid’s turn to choose. He picked up every weapon left, testing its weight and feel in his hand. Even the flail, even though he knew from his last experience that he wouldn’t use it. After a long time, Kavid had finally narrowed his choice down to three things. They were all swords, a rapier, a long sword, and a scimitar. Bluto walked up to him.
“You know, you can always choose two weapons.” he said. “What, double wield?” Kavid asked. “You can’t really do that with any of these, except the long sword. And to do that, I’d need a short sword, but there’s none left.”
Bluto nodded along with what Kavid was saying. “That’s all true, except for one thing.” "What?” “There is one short sword left.” Bluto said. “There is, where?” Kavid asked. “Come with me.”
Bluto crossed the room, and walked up to the hours chart. He lifted it up from the wall to reveal a handle inset in the wall. Bluto tugged it out slightly, and then pushed inwards. With a slow creaking sound, a door opened in the wall! It was undetectable, even if you were looking for it. It opened inwards an sealed so precisely that there were no cracks when it closed. All the trainees gaped open mouthed at the sudden opening in the wall. Bluto beckoned Kavid forward. As he walked into the room with Kavid trailing behind, he said,
“This particular sword hasn’t been used in about twenty years. It has been used by only the best swordsmen of the Black Hats. Some say that it even belonged to the original Black Hat himself. All I know is that it has been passed down since then, and now I think you should use it.”
“Really?” Kavid asked in amazement. “I don’t what do say....” “Do you want to use it?” Bluto asked. “Yes! I mean, sure. Yes, I would be honored.” Kavid said. “You should be.” Bluto said with a smile.
He walked over to a large covered object. He whipped off the tarp to reveal.... a trunk. Bluto unhinged the trunk’s elaborate clasps to reveal.... another tarp. He pulled off the second tarp to reveal one of the most amazing swords Kavid had ever seen. As Bluto picked it up gently, the light sparkled off the golden hilt, and the jewels inlaid in the blade. Kavid felt as though he had fallen in love. Bluto looked at the sword thoughtfully, and then tossed it over his shoulder. Kavid watched in horror as the blade spun through the air, and then hit the ground and shattered. Bluto turned to see Kavid’s mortified expression.
“What, you didn’t think that was it, did you?” Bluto laughed. “That was a quality gold paint and stick on jewel replica incase anyone managed to get in here and tried to steal it. This is the real sword.”
Bluto gave a tug, and removed the false bottom of the trunk. He removed yet another small tarp, and gazed into the trunk. He then reached his hands in, and removed the fabled short sword. Kavid still couldn’t see it, as Bluto’s large body blocked his view. He must have done that on purpose. Finally, Bluto turned. With a flourish, he drew the sword from its scabbard.
“That’s it?” Kavid asked. “That’s the famous sword only used by the masters?” “Uh huh. Pretty cool, ain’t it?”
In truth, Kavid would have preferred the fake. The real sword was very plain, very dull, not at all the *shing*, *sparkle, sparkle* he had expected. The blade, probably once shiny, was old and dull. The hilt was just as plain. With a simple metal guard separating it from the blade it was on the whole, not special. Kavid looked at it disheartened. But Bluto seemed to think that it was the greatest thing since taco sauce on spaghetti, so Kavid cracked a weak smile, and took it by the hilt. He had to admit, it felt good in his hand. Kavid gave a few experimental twirls, and nodded. Despite its lack of luster, it was still a good sword.
“The blade cuts through things like butter.” Bluto said. “Well, accept like stone, it doesn’t really do that.”
Kavid absentmindedly fingered the blade. He jerked his hand away suddenly, his finger was bleeding.
“I told you,” Bluto smiled. “Like butter.”
Kavid lay on his back on his bed, looking at the sword Bluto had given him. The long sword lay next to his bed. Next to it was the small pellet straw. Kavid has decided to take it along for laughs more than anything else, but you never knew. Yath’s head appeared upside down from the top bunk. He looked at the sword in Kavid’s hand for a few minutes.
“You know what Kavid?” he asked finally. “What?” “That sword is a piece of crap.” Yath said, with a confirming nod. His head disappeared, and he jumped down to the floor. “Well, it looks like it but...” “But it’s still a piece of crap.” “No, I just feel as if there’s something different about this sword. I just can’t put my finger on it.” “Maybe it’s just a-” “Okay Yath, I get it. It’s a piece of crap.” “Now you’re getting it.”
There was a knock on the door. Kavid raised his head to see who it was.
“Can I come in? Pilot asked. “Sure.”
Pilot came in, and walked over towards them. As she passed, Yath stood up strait and puffed out his chest.
“How you doin’?” he asked in his best deep manly voice. “Oh, hi Yath. So,” she turned to Kavid. “How’s the sword?” “It’s a piece of....” “Yath!” Kavid said. “It’s okay.” he told Pilot. “Well, Bluto did work it up to be all sorts of special.” “Yeah, well, it’s not much to look at, but there’s something about it. I don’t know. It’s probably nothing.” “You guys have a regular party going on in here.” Chris said, walking in. Yath puffed up again. “Chris.”
Chris looked Yath up and down with a slightly pained expression on her face. “Yath, how’s life?” “Oh, you know, life is good. I-” “Yath, give it a rest, will you?” Kavid asked. “Excuuusssse me, Kavid.” Yath said, putting emphasis on his name. “I am trying to do something here.” he said, gesturing to Chris.
Chris smiled. “And what exactly would you be trying to do Yath.?” She asked innocently. “I, uh, well, so Kavid, how’s the sword?” “It’s a piece of crap.” Kavid replied sarcastically. “Who’s this?” Pilot asked, picking up Alex’s picture frame. “I wouldn’t touch that.” Kavid warned her. “He can get pretty testy. I don’t know who that is though.” “I should ask him.” Pilot mused. “Yeah, you can do that.”
After reaching the same level as everyone else, Kavid joined them in the MSR. The acronym stood for the Mission Simulation Room. It was full of obstacle courses, and life size models of vaults, and other useful things to prepare the recruits a bit more for an actual mission. Kavid, Yath, Pilot, and Chris stood shoulder to shoulder in front of one of the larger safes. Their mentors stood facing them.
“Where’s Alex?” Pilot whispered. “I don’t know...” “Quite!” Bluto barked. “Your first objective is breaking in, obviously.” Eva said. “Well, that should be easy.” Yath commented. “Don’t be so sure.” Eva cautioned them. “The thing you’re really trying to work on is getting the job done undetected. Now, all of you have your own strengths and weaknesses, use those to your advantage.” “Trust in each other.” Thatch added. “You’ll only be able to be successful by working together.” “You will have a time limit of one hour.” Bluto told them. “The simulation will terminate once that time has elapsed, or if other circumstances interrupt that.” “Other circumstances?” Pilot asked. “Success is the most preferable.” Bluto said with a small smile. “Once the doors close when we leave, the timer will start, good luck.”
One after the other, the mentors filed out of the MSR. The recruits watched them go, and waited until the door sealed itself. A horn sounded, and they knew that the simulation had begun. Kavid stared up at the model vault. The door stood ten feet high, and they didn’t know what the interior was like. He knew the others were also taking in their surroundings, as they had been trained to do.
“Ready?” Kavid whispered.
Everyone nodded in response.
“Okay then, Yath, give me a leg up.”
Kavid just put his hand on the ledge, when a blaring siren echoed thunderously though the chamber. Kavid fell and landed on Yath. Everyone was trying to cover their ears. Kavid felt as if his head was being split open. Finally, after a full minute, the blaring stopped. While everyone’s ears were ringing, Bluto’s voice came over the intercom.
“Tch, tch, didn’t check for cameras did they?” “No they didn’t.” Eva’s voice answered from the speakers. “Nor did they look for motion or pressure sensors.” “They didn’t, did they? For shame.” Kavid could imagine Bluto shaking is head in mock shame. “Reset!” he barked unexpectedly. “Obviously you have a lot of work to do, so let’s get to it!”
There was a collective groan as the trainees picked themselves up and got back into position. This was going to take a while.
Once again, Kavid was worked to near exhaustion, day in, day out. He took little solace in the fact that the others were with him this time. Except Alex. Somehow, he always managed to disappear right before training, but none of the mentors brought attention to it. It’s like they didn’t even notice. Normally Kavid would have asked Bluto about it afterwards, but he needed his little remaining strength to get up the stairs at night. All the same though, they were improving, individually, and as a team. Their weaknesses and strengths were becoming apparent to each other, and they used this knowledge to aid them.
Even their social status was improving within the Hats. Yath would get returning nods to his greetings, even the occasional ‘morning’. Kavid would get occasional greetings as well. Chris, to her displeasure, was starting to be hit on by some of the members, and Pilot could often be found talking about flying with the more interested among the senior Hats. But even with the added attention, the four, and Alex when he was around, stayed together as much as possible.
It had been almost a month and a half since their first try at the vault, and they had come very far. They had managed to scrape up times decent enough to get on the charts for all six of the practice vaults, and had mastered the obstacle course. They had even passed the surprise test when the Hat’s had stolen all their things, and locked them in the tower. All that was left was a field test, and they would be full members.
“This is it.” Bluto said, pacing back and forth. “This is the final hurtle before I don’t have to look at your faces anymore.” he softened a bit. “You have come along way. But this is the turning point. You either become members, or we send you home.” he paused. “Yes, we can do that.” he said, seeing Yath open his mouth to speak.
“We have chosen a target for you.” Eva told them. “It’s not all that big, but it will still be a challenge. I think you guys can handle it.”
“Here are the plans for the building.” Simian said, handing them to Chris. “Look them over, plan your strategy.”
“It’s three o’clock now.” Thatch told them. “You have until 3:30 to look around the actual building and the premises, and then you are to come back here. Come nightfall, you will start the mission. Hopefully you will not fail.”
“If you are chased, do not come back here.” Bluto said. “There is a safe house to go to while being pursued. Lose any tails there, and then report back here. Any questions?”
“Yeah, will Alex be with us?” Kavid asked. “Yes, he will.” “Where has he been all this time?” “He has been taking private lessons with the Black Hat.” “What? Why has-” “I suggest that you save your questions for Alex.” Bluto said pointedly. “Understood...”
Later, Kavid went with Yath to scope out the outside of the building they were going to break into, while Pilot and Chris milled around inside. It was a typical bank, three vaults, and teller stations. Easy picking once they got in. Even though it was a bit stereotypical, the girls would cause less suspicion loitering around inside than the guys would, so they had agreed to look around the building’s interior. Just as well, Kavid though, it was pouring rain outside.
“Shouldn’t Alex be here with us?” Yath asked, his voice barely audible over the sheets of rain. “Yeah, but he’s probably, oh look. There he is now.” Kavid said, spotting the white haired head. Kavid jogged over with his collar pulled tight around his ears. “Alex!” he called.
But Alex didn’t turn. Kavid finally reached him, and tapped his shoulder.
“Alex, what are you doing?” Kavid asked.
But it wasn’t Alex. Kavid wondered how he had missed it. This kid was short, but still a lot taller than Alex. His cold, nearly black eyes stared at Kavid.
“What do you want?” He asked in a voice as cold as his eyes. “Sorry, I thought you were someone else.” “Piss off.”
The white haired man strode away from Kavid without another word. Yath caught up to Kavid.
“What’s up with Alex?” “That wasn’t Alex, just another guy with white hair.” Kavid said. “What, is that like the style now?” Yath asked. “I wonder if Chris likes white hair....” He mused. “There’s time for that later.” Kavid told him. “Come on, we have a rendevous with Chris and Pilot under that awning over there.”
Kavid and Yath trudged though the storm over to the awning, never realizing they were being watched. The man with white hair watched them with a scrutinizing eye as they met with Pilot and Chris. He read they’re lips as they conversed.
“So what did you find out here?” Pilot asked. “Pretty standard.” Yath told them. “Windows are all high, and we saw blinking lights, which means an alarm would be set off if we broke a window to get in.” “There are cameras on every corner,” Kavid said, motioning to the black boxes mounted on the front corners of the building. “Pretty low tech by my guess. Probably on the same circuit, we just had a bit of trouble finding an outside line with all this rain.” Yath nodded. “As for entrances, there’s only two, the main one out front, and a service in back. It opens out onto a private dock onto the Thames, for cargo barges.” “What did you find inside?” Kaivd asked. “Nothing we didn’t know already.” Chris told them. “Three vaults, easy enough. There aren’t any obvious ways in.” “That’s good, because they won’t be able to trace our escape.” Pilot said. “The only other thing that uh...Chris found out by using....” “Lesser mainstream methods.” she interjected quickly. “Right, well, anyway, she found out that there are two night guards on patrol, and one passes the vaults every five minutes.” “Could we take ‘em out?” Yath asked. “No.” Kavid said. “If they’re found before they wake up, they’ll be on to us. It would be best to just be in and out before the next one comes.” “That’s cutting it really close.” Chris reminded them. “Yeah, but have you seen some of our times?” Pilot said. “I say go for it.” “Right,” Kavid said. “Anyone else have another idea?”
They all shook their heads.
“It’s decided then.” “Now someone’s gotta just tell Alex.” “Well, he’s probably back at the base.” “Let’s head back then.”
The white haired man followed them with his eyes until they walked around the corner and out of sight. They were good, considering they were so young. But he was better. The man allowed himself a small smile. It took him a moment or two to figure out which muscles to use, he didn’t normally smile. Those kids really did make his job easier. Now that he new their plans, he could make the grab before them, and let them get chased on his behalf. The man walked out into the storm again, and disappeared into the rain.
Back at the base Kavid and the others were making final preparations. Kavid and Yath were strapping on their weapons when Alex walked in.
“Where have you been?” Kavid asked him. “Yeah, we were supposed to be scouting.” Yath said. “You guys had the covered.” Alex replied. “So I stayed behind and looked over the plans we received.” “Oh, that’s real helpful.” Yath said sarcastically. “Actually, it was, look.” Alex said, unrolling the plans on his bed.
Pilot and Chris walked in.
“Oh, there he is.” Chris said. “Here, you come and look too.” Alex said.
He gestured to the representation of the Thames on the plans. “Somewhere around here is another way into the building.” “Yeah, it’s called the cargo bay, we already knew that.” Pilot said. “No, not that.” Alex told her. “When the ships come here, the should be able to refuel and stuff right?” “You think there’s a fuel line that leads into the building?” Yath asked. Alex nodded. “Yes, I do, but there’s something else more promising. Remember a while back, when all river side building were equipped with a duct for water power?”
Then it hit them. Alex was right, there was another way in. Not the most favorable, but it was completely unguarded.

Chapter 5
“Ewww, this reeks!” Pilot said disgustedly. “Well, it is a sewage pipe.” Alex reminded her. “You said it was for water power!” “Ssssshhhhh!” Kavid shushed her. Alex continued in a whisper. “Keyword, ‘was’. That was the original purpose years ago, but now it’s a sewage line.” “Wait, how do you know all this? This was probably converted back when we were six, you couldn’t have even walked back then!” Yath whispered. “I talk to people.” Alex said simply. “Besides, I may be older than I look.” “You said you were 12!” “Maybe I don’t age.”
Every grew silent. Finally, Kavid spoke up.
“Guys, let’s concentrate on the mission for now, agreed?”
As the tunnel turned a shallow bend as it went underneath the building, Kavid saw the others nod. Soon after the bend, the tunnel came to a halt horizontally, and went strait up into the building.
“Now what?” Yath asked. “Two people press their backs together and link arms, then walk up the shaft.” Alex said finally. “But there’s five of us.” Kavid pointed out. “Oh, that was for you guys.” Alex said. “What are you going to do, jump?” Yath asked sarcastically. Alex flashed a smile. “Exactly.”
Alex positioned himself under the tube. He crouched, and like he had springs attached to his feet, he leaped fifteen feet strait in the air. The others gaped open mouthed.
“It’s not that far,” Alex called down in a whisper. “Hurry up!”
Pilot stood back to back with Chris, and they linked arms. Pilot steadied her left foot on the wall, and Chris her right. They both pushed off at the same time, and then placed their opposite feet on the wall. Slowly but surely, they began to climb. One they were about five feet up, Yath and Kavid followed suit. In no time, they were all in the basement of the bank. Kavid motioned for silence in the half light, and they moved towards the stairs leading up to the main floor. They snuck from the basement door to the line of teller booths. Kavid poked his head up over the barrier.
“Okay,” his whispered. “I don’t see any guards. We’ll get as close as we can to the vault, and then wait for one of the guards to pass.”
The others nodded in agreement. In a crouch, they moved silently to the edge of the teller booths, only ten feet from the vaults.
“Okay, here he comes, get ready.”
They watched as the portly guard rounded the corner. It was doubtful that he had seen any action on his job. He strolled lazily with the manner of a man who wished that he was home at this hour. He absentmindedly twirled his night stick in his right hand, and his left was firmly clasped on his belt, as if his pants were at risk of falling any second. He ambled slowly towards the vaults. He was at the halfway point between the next corner when he stopped abruptly. He slumped to the ground, and lay there, unmoving. A figure dropped silently, catlike, down from one of the high windows. He strolled lazily over to the guard, and nudged the unmoving body with his toe, grunting satisfactorily.
Kavid repressed a small gasp. The white hair was unmistakable, it was the man he had mistook for Alex earlier. The white haired man quickly strode to the vaults, and began to crack the center one.
“We have to do something!” Yath whispered urgently. “Hey!”
The other guard had rounded the corner. He saw his downed partner, and then the open vault. The white haired man was nowhere to be seen, presumably he was inside the vault already. The guard rushed over to his partner, and knelt down, checking his voice. When he looked up, the guard spotted Kavid and Yath’s faces poking out from around the booths.
“You there!” he called. “Don’t move!” “Scatter!” Kavid yelled.
Pilot ran down the hallway that led around the vaults, and Chris sprinted past the guard to run the other way. Yath quickly followed Pilot, and Alex ran towards the entrance. Kavid paused for a second, and then bolted back behind the row of teller booths. The guard had ran after Yath and Pilot, he was nowhere to be seen. The man with white hair calmly walked out of the vault, and looked around.
“You.” Kavid said more to himself than anything.
He sprinted towards the white haired man, who apparently didn’t see him. When he was almost on top of him, Kavid let out a yell, and dove. The man whipped around. Seeing Kavid, he ducked, and Kavid was sent sprawling over him. Then the man took off. Kavid picked himself up, and gave chase.
“Alex, grab him!” he called.
Alex dove for the man’s ankles, but he leaped, and Alex ended up skidding across the floor. Kavid ran past him.
“Come on!” he yelled.
As Kavid burst out into the street, Alex caught up to him. He saw a flash of light disappear around the corner.
“There!”
Kavid bolted after the man. To his surprise, Alex kept pace with him, even though his legs were shorter. He even started to pull ahead, and zoomed around the corner a few steps ahead of Kavid. As he turned the corner, Kavid saw that Alex was almost on the man with white hair. But the man jumped mid stride. There was a glint of light reflected on a blade as he whipped in a full circle, and kept running. Alex fell to his knees. Kavid caught up to Alex, who was holding his arm.
“Just a scratch,” he grunted. “Don’t let him get away!”
Kavid nodded, and kept chase. Rounding another bend, he saw the man disappear into a shop. Slowing down as to not alert his presence, Kavid quietly stole into the shop. The man was standing with his back to Kavid, chuckling. Kavid silently drew his long sword. The man turned faster than seemed possible, and there was a glint as something flew though the air. The dart pierced Kavid’s skin, and his entire arm went numb, dropping the sword. A knife shot out of his other hand, and pinned Kavid’s other arm to the wall at the sleeve.
“You thought you were a match for me.” the man sneered. “How foolish.” He paced slowly in front of Kavid. “Well, I cannot leave any witnesses.” he murmered.
Kavid spotted a barrel near his limp arm. There were hilts sticking up from the top, if he could just free his left arm....
“Well, I suppose this is always the easiest way.” the man said, drawing a hand ful of darts.
A few things happened in those next few seconds. Kavid ripped his arm from the wall, tearing his shirt. He grabbed one of the hilts from the barrel. As the darts soared towards him, he pulled on the hilt, and his eyes widened. A flyswatter!? But his body was going through the reflex of blocking, there was no hope for him now....
There were a series of small thunks. Kavid opened his eyes to see the dart points poking through the holes of the flyswatter, inches from his face. Taking advantage of the second before the man realized what was happening, Kavid rolled the flyswatter so that the dart points were facing the other way, and he smacked the man on the shoulder.
There was so much paralysis serum that the whole of the man’s side slumped on contact, and he fell to the floor. They were both breathing hard.
“Now, where did you hide the loot?” Kavid asked. The man laughed. “Who said I hid it?”
Kavid turned as he heard sirens, and the shouting of police coming towards them. He turned back, and the white haired man was gone. Kavid cursed to himself. He snuck quietly out of the shop and into the street. There was no sign of Alex. They were probably all at the safe house. Under the cover of darkness, Kavid made his way to where he hoped the others were waiting for him.
A few minutes later, Kavid clumped up the steps into the safe house. It had begun to pour again outside, and his trench coat was soaking wet. The door opened with a loud creak, and Kavid entered the room without a word. He dropped his coat on the floor, and ran his hands through his equally soaked hair. Four faces stared back at him through the flickering darkness cast by a lone candle on top of one of the various cargo boxes that littered the floor. After a few moments passed where noone moved, Yath began to pace again.
“This is not good, not good, not good.....” He muttered continuously to himself.
Chris stared blankly off into space. Pilot rest her head in her hands with a laborious sigh. Alex grimaced slightly as he gripped his arm. Kavid strode over, and knelt down next to Alex.
“You okay?” he asked softly.
Alex nodded weakly. “Yeah. Chris gave me a piece of cloth to bind it and stop the bleeding.” “Have you checked on it since?”
Alex loosened his grip and removed the cloth. Kavid took in a sharp breath. Already, Alex’s wound was scabbing over, the bleeding had stopped.
“More abilities?” Kavid asked. “Yeah, I guess.” “Well, when we get back you should really wash all that dry blood off. For now, keep the pressure on.”
Alex nodded. Kavid stood up, and gazed around the room at his friends. “Well, first things first.” he said finally. “Was anyone else besides Alex harmed?” “We checked all that stuff out while we were waiting.” Pilot said. “A few cuts and bruises, but nothing serious.” Kavid nodded. “Did anyone-?” “No.” Chris said. “All that crap for nothing.” “We are so dead.” Yath said. “We’re gonna be kicked out for sure.” “The circumstances were beyond our control.” Kavid said. “They’ll understand. They have to give us another chance.” “How do we know that white haired guy wasn’t sent by them to test us?” Chris asked out loud. “You saw what happened to Alex.” Kavid said. “The Hats wouldn’t intentionally do that to one of their own.” “Maybe.....” “Was anyone followed?” “No, we all got here without any tails.” Pilot said.
Everyone fell silent again. The sound of the rain against the walls beat a tatoo on the inside of Kavid’s head.
“What happened to the guy anyway?” Alex asked Kavid. Kavid shook his head. “He got away, but I don’t know if he took the stuff he had stolen.” “So, what now?” Pilot asked. “Well, get some rest, if you can.” Kavid said. “Try to work out the details about tonight in your heads. We’ll stand more of a chance if we’re not tripping over ourselves.”
Yath sat down with a laborious sigh, and rested his face in his hands. Then he looked up at Kavid. “And what about tomorrow?” he asked. Kavid sat across from him. “We hope for the best.”
The five new recruits looked up at the Black Hat’s building. It seemed more ominous somehow, as if it would digest them if they set foot inside. The sky behind it was still the grey of morning, and even though it had stopped raining hours ago, the streets were still slick with water. Kavid shrugged into his coat, and looked left, and then right. On either side of him, they nodded, and he led the procession into the main hall. Bluto was there to greet them.
“Well, I head that the bank was robbed successfully!” he said. “Which means two things, one: congratulations on your first theft, and two: you really should try to be a bit more stealthy next time so it takes them longer. But you can work on that, I......”
Bluto trailed off, seeing the looks on their faces. All five had bags under their eyes, and not one would look at him while he was talking.
“You guys looked like you haven’t slept in weeks.” Bluto said. “What’s-? Oh no....” He trailed off again. “That wasn’t you, was it?” Bluto asked. “It wasn’t our fault!” Yath blurted out. “Yeah, there was this guy....” Pilot explained. “With white hair like mine.” Alex said. “He was scouting outside the same time we were.” Kavid said. “He tipped off the guards, and then disappeared so they’d go after us.....” “Hold it, HOLD IT!” Bluto bellowed, quelling the escalating tale. “This is a lot to take in at once. Now, I want someone to explain exactly what happened.”
So they proceeded to tell Bluto of their plans, and the white haired man, and how he had skewed their plans so horribly that there was no chance to save them. Bluto listened in silence. He nodded along with the telling. The only indication that he was listening at all was the fact that his brow continued to furrow deeper and deeper with each new development.
“.......And that’s how it happened.” Kavid finished. “I see.” Bluto said after a few moments of silence. “Well, I will relay your story to the rouge council, your fate will rest with them. Now,” he told them. “I would suggest that you go to your rooms, wash up, and get some rest. I don’t want you leaving the building, preferably those rooms, until you are called for. Is that clear?” “Yes...” they mumbled. “Very well, you can go.”
