MacLeod's cell phone went off as he was driving home from Seacouver University where he had been teaching another semester of Rennaissance Art and History. "MacLeod," he said gruffly, one eye on the traffic.

"Mac, it's Joe," came the raspy tones of his Watcher through the receiver. "Have you seen Me-- ah, Adam today?"

MacLeod frowned. "Not for a couple days. Why?"

"Well," Joe hesitated only long enough to feel Duncan's gathering impatience through the phone. "Okay, we have a Watcher on him, as Adam, not, well, you know."

"Joe..." Mac growled.

"Meet me at Pier 14," Joe said, then quickly ended the call.

Mac decided now was not the time to obey traffic laws as he hit the accellerator.

Pier 14 was still roped off with crime scene tape, but the police had left. Joe Dawson stood in the center of the faded wood pier, leaning on his cane, as MacLeod showed up in his black convertable T-Bird and parked. A young man stood with Joe, eyes widening as Mac hurriedly left the car and moved toward them, black duster flapping in the wind off the bay.

"Holy sh*t, that's Duncan MacLeod," the kid was saying to Joe as Mac came within range. "You frikkin' called Duncan MacLeod. Man, am I gonna get in trouble for this?"

"Shut up," Joe told him, not unkindly, "until I tell you to speak." He understood the youth's nerves, remembering a few years ago, when they were hunting the rogue Immortal Kalas, how everyone had reacted to MacLeod walking right into the Paris headquarters.

MacLeod glanced around at the destruction still evident at the pier, ignoring the boy for now. There were several large smears of dried blood, evidence of scorched and splintered wood scattered about, and at his feet... a gouge that looked like a bullet hole.

"What happened, Joe?" he asked tightly. "And what has it got to do with... Adam?"

"This is Booth Deal," Joe said, indicating the young man who blushed horribly when Mac turned his attention on him. "Adam's his first field assignment. Booth, tell MacLeod what you saw."

"Yes, sir," Booth said, clearing his voice. He found it difficult to meet the dark eyes of the Immortal as he spoke. "I don't know why Mr. Pierson came down here. He got a phone call on his cell. I followed him, and this Immortal was waiting for him. Big guy. Adam didn't expect him, but he didn't seem surprised either. He said something about using his student's name as bait."

"Pheonix?" Mac asked roughly.

"Yes, sir. This Immortal identified himself as Braheem al Beik, and it wasn't until they were fighting that the others showed up."

"Others?"

Booth swallowed nervously. "Yeah, others. Al Beik was cheating. He had three other Immortals with him, and they started to attack Adam, too. Mr. MacLeod, I never saw anyone move like Pierson did. He seemed to... I don't know. Lose it, I guess. He cut off al Beik's head, then pulled a gun and shot the others. Before al Beik's Quickening could start, he'd whacked the heads off the other three."

Mac's eyes went wide as he listened, a trembling running through his body.

"Pierson started to run," Booth continued, "but... I couldn't watch it all. It was so bright and loud, and Adam was screaming. When it stopped, he was gone. I managed to get this before I had to leave." He drew Methos' Ivanhoe broadsword, stained with blood, from behind his back, barely able to lift it. "The cops were coming."

Mac reached out automatically, taking the hilt in his calloused palm. Methos was out there, somewhere, unarmed. And after taking four Quickenings at once, who knew what condition his mind was in...

"Well damn, knew this town was cracked, you people never have normal nights hu?" It was oddly enough Kalika of all people who had walked up, she was a good ways out, studying the area. She was was normal dressed in jeans and a half corset, chewing on gum, though also had a cigarette out and lit, the gum was suppose to help with that bad habit, never did though. "Sounds like I missed the show, of course, the police get called in after all the fun happens, always." Which gave away how she was there, police radio, jacked that a few months back, it was handy when bored, or trying to stay out of sight.

She didn't bother to get any closer, besides she was intruding, and she knew it, "That's a b***h though, four, hmm, do hope someone's looking for him?" She sounded almost emotionless, which was the only hint she was halfway in work mode, no amusement or annoyance, instead she was just a shell it seemed. "Based on personality how likely is it he has another weapon on him, past the gun? That'll be empty or almost again that number of people."

Kali gave a small pause to finish off the cig, "Oh, and miss Phoenix Draka went missing, reported by a miss Luana Silvers about four hours ago. Miss Silvers is at the moment pissed, blaming herself, and hunting with a small arsenal to start a mini-war, well maybe not that much. I do wanta know where she got an automatic mini-uzi though, I've been wanting one of though..."

Mac, Joe and Booth all turned to look at Kali as she talked and smoked. Not bothering to answer the young woman, Mac took out his cell phone and punched in Phoenix Draka's number. He didn't bother to try Methos' -- it would have been fried during the Multi-Quickening.

Joe motioned Kali to come over, saying, "What do you know about Phoenix and Luana?"

Caught in the swift undertow, a body can travel quite a distance before finally popping to the surface; turning, twisting, being clawed by submerged branches and briefly held before breaking free to sweep on.

At some point a pale face topped with sleek dark hair broke the surface, gasping air into tortured lungs, then smashing into another death against the Seacouver Bridge's pylon and sinking back below the short choppy waves.

Now normally she might give a smart a** remark here, but instead she shrugged slightly and stuck to facts, "Last I knew, Draka was on the verge of a mental breakdown, apparently she doesn't like death, or it was the dieing twice in one fight because the guy liked to play, which was why he lost. She honestly went missing about 1700 yesterday, no reason why, no warning, nothing." A small pause, hey a woman needs to breath and she sighed, "Luana, violent a** woman though nice at times, threatened to make me eat my heart if I got in her way, blames self for the problems dealing with Draka. The reason was they had a loud, if not painful fight at 1500 hours yesterday which resulted in Draka storming out pissed."

Kali shrugged, "Anything else on them? There's others I know of an looked in on, but they were boring, so very boring." Of course normally the other two were boring, at lest as of late for Luana, but that seemed to have changed slightly.

As for the phone call, it cut straight to voicemail which gave a house number and another cell number to call. "Oh, yes, her phone has been tried, so don't bother, as well as other numbers known for her, duh." Kali wasn't stupid, sometimes slightly suicidal, violent, off in ways, but not stupid, she kept track of somethings. Mainly just because she could, but it worked in the long run, her methods were way different then normal watchers, but hey, she wasn't normal.

Mac snapped his cell phone closed, jaw tight with suppressed violence. He found himself agreeing with Luana, and stalked away before he could act upon that agreement. Catching Booth by the arm as he passed the youth, he pulled him aside to grill while he examined the warf for traces of Methos others might have missed.

"Are you Watching Draka and Silver?" Joe asked Kali, incredulously. "You're not supposed to be doing field work until you've been cleared by Headquarters. Besides, both of those subjects have Watchers."

She snorted, "Hell no, besides I could tell you as much on most the others in town as well, gesh, oh, and Silvers doesn't anymore, I'll be happy to direct you to the body though." Kali shook her head at that thought, "Hell I almost became a body, I don't think she likes watchers. Oh, and has the one on Draka been of any help?" Now she was being a smart a**.

Joe's face looked like a grizzled thundercloud, and he gave a quick glance to where Mac was kneeling and studying the warf. "This is why you're not ready for field work," he growled quietly. "Rules, Kali. You're not supposed to let the subject know you're there, you're not supposed to fraternize -- and don't throw MacLeod in my face. He's a special case. Are you telling me Luana's murdered her Watcher?"

"Uh, yeah, that's what I'm telling you, and I think I know the rules, so I think I know when I ignore them, but I had information she was going to find helpful." Another shrug, "And I bet fifty he's in the water." Talk about subject change for a moment. "But I got bored, I needed something to do past gardening, besides I suck with plants."

The return of life brought a return of drowning, despite the cut of rough rocks under his back, and the sodden young man twisted onto his side. Gurgling and choking, he brought up a small fish bowl of water from his lungs before curling in on himself in weak agony.

It took another spasm of coughing to clear his lungs completely, and he found himself on his hands and knees. Roughly he lurched to his feet, unsteadily looking around in bewilderment. Wrapping wet sleeved arms around his chilled body, he began to move farther up the bank.

Where th' hell am I? he wondered.

Matthew tilted his head watching the guy that had just walked out of the water, water that someone shouldn't have been in, oh, well it was another immortal, so that made more sense. Now the only question was why the guy was in the water, wasn't the smartest place to be really. He, himself had been sitting there meditating, it was a nice quiet place that no one ever visited, it wasn't scenic enough or something. With slow, careful; movements he got to his feet, pulling both long daggers, the didn't look armed, but that didn't mean he wasn't. Even so he kicked his jacket towards the guy, it was leather but the guy looked cold, "Need a coat?"

Joe, who had once been sentenced to a bullet in the head for ignoring the rules in the belief that it had cost Watchers' lives, grit his teeth. "MacLeod's coming back," he hissed. "Do not mention Luana's Watcher. You and I, we'll talk about that later."

MacLeod came stalking up, Booth in his wake. "I think Adam went into the water," the Scot said. "I'm going to search the river. Joe, you should go back to the bar, see if any other Watchers have spotted him."

"Create a command post," Joe nodded.

"Later, oh joy." She rolled her eyes, she bored again, but see if she ever tried to be helpful again, gesh, the thanks she got, next time she keep her mouth shut. "Well geee, I guess I'll pretend to be a good little girl and go home." Or bar hopping, that sounded good too.
