Malamili was pacing across a twenty foot expanse of terrain. He would bolt up the side of a dune, take a flying leap at its crest into the air with jaws snapping, plummet into the dirt, jog a few paces, turn, and repeat the same action. As if it wasn't enough that the young hyena was behaving strangely, he was also an absurb series of colors. As he leapt into the air, patches of his coat in varying shades of blue shimered as if they were gemstones. His quick movements knocked the scale-like bones around his elbows and ankles together, which created an odd clicking noise.

He was brightly colored, shining, moving about, and making noise. Malamili could hardly be missed by anyone with eyes.

Porib paused one paw held up in the air as he watched the other one, the crazy one, pacing his way, floppy ears cocked up. He crept forward a blot of grey-green fur on the dull bleached scrub and sand, before laying flat on his belly... crouching...and streaking forward to bark at the other cub.

The sound of a cub's cry alerted Kain to the presence of outsiders. He was patrolling the very edges of his clan's territory. Kain hadn't seen any strange hyenas in quite a while, and the sounds interested him. The shaggy male trotted towards the dune, slowing as he neared the sounds of the disturbance. Something running, scuffling... clicking? And that cub's cry. It sounded like some kind of animal in distress. An injured or fighting cub. Something disturbing, anyways.

Kain crept forward slowly, keeping low to the ground. Rounding the crest of the dune, he saw two cubs. A small, darkish one running towards another cub whose colors hurt his eyes. He squinted. What on earth was going on? Keeping his voice low in case the cubs' parents were around, he let out a short yi-yi-yi cry of welcome.

Amili's paws dug into the sand as he pivoted away from the oncoming other-cub, leaping into another fast stride that carried him straight towards the yipping adult. Unfortunately, he wasn't exactly happy about this choice either and tried to stop himself. His speed and weight threw him into a forward tumble, effectively landing him with his nose half-buried in the sand. The sun-drenched male pulled himself out of the sand, giving his body a good shake to rid it of the grains, and blinking sun-specked eyes up at the adult. The motion made his plates clack together more, drawing attention to the odd extremity.

He made a small gagging noise, tipping his nose into the air above his head with his mouth partially open and breathing deeply as if he was hunting something. Then he dropped his head and shook it, staring from the cub to the adult as if they were little more than an annoyance. And they were - they were both in his way. "Move," he demanded breathily, sides heaving from all his running, "you'll chase it away!" He ended his statement in a high-pitched yip, scraping his paw across the sand and jostling his elbow plates.

Porib's bounding towards the other cub stopped the moment the adult male gave the yi-yi-yi and he dug his hind legs into the sand to stop. He was more surprised and lowered his head submissively to the strange elder, his floppy ears going back against his head. He was just trying to find out what the crazy one with the bright colors was chasing at.

The lack of movement showed he hadn't been feeding well lately. Momma hadn't woken up this morning when he wanted to play so he had wandered off in search of anything interesting. Now he was rather regretting his decision.

Rather taken aback by the orange cub, Kain stopped in his tracks. It was a strange, twitchy beast, with those odd lumps and bumps on its legs. He frowned, wrinkling his nose. Were they warts, growths, scabs, old lumpy scar tissue? He couldn't tell. They didn't look natural, whatever they were. Kain decided to stay back from the cub in case the lumps were catching.

The darkling cub, now, that one was cowering before him. It seemed underfed. Kain felt a wash of sympathy. He had always been something of a mother hen. Not the best survival trait, maybe, but he couldn't help himself. "Are you alone?" He remembered the orange cub's strange words. Perhaps the cubs had been attempting to hunt together. Kain scrunched his nose up, sniffing the air. He couldn't detect a trace of prey. "What are you chasing?"

He danced his weight from one paw to another, nearly the complete opposite of Porib's reluctant movements. Though to be fair, underneath his bright coat lay a frame that was thinned and worn from the desert's lack of clean water and food. His tail sloshed behind him, young vocals attempting to mimic Kain's original greeting with little reason behind the action. He twisted his head to the side at the adult's question, abruptly flopping into the sand and panting with his tongue lolled out the corner of his mouth.

"S'gone now, and it's your fault," he wrinkled his nose a bit as he spoke, then looked straight up into the sky. "I'll get it one day. Know I will. Chase it across the land every day, and have a few chances before it slips away at night. Also, can sometimes get at it when night chases it out again into day." His head lowered to lick at his paws before he leapt back onto his feet and approached Kain with his ears lowered, legs bent a bit submissively as his tail tentatively shook from side-to-side. It seemed the little pup at least had some sense about respect. Or something like that...
