Q: Why is the name of the thready "Fooly Coolly"?
A: At the end of FLCL episode 6, you see a magazine accompanied by a picture of Naota holding a guitar with the words “Fooly Coolly.” This is often justified as a misspelling or some kind of animation error. This is not the case, “Fooly Coolly” was completely intentional. “Coolly” is an English word meaning to be composed and unconcerned with ones self. Perhaps this is a reference to how Naota is growingly confident in himself as a young adult. This could also be a departure from the term “Fooly Cooly,” hinting at Naota’s nature of being foolishly over-confident and cynical to act mature.
