I got the idea to start this topic from the schooling one. I would have kept it on that topic, but I wanted to JUST talk about this school system.

*Note: The web addresses are not click-able. If someone can tell me how to make them click-able that'd be awesome.

Where I first read about Sudbury Valley School. A very interesting read.

http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/pto-20060427-000002.html Another article about the school ideals and such.

I encourage you to explore this site, especially the "About Us" section, explaining how the school works.

Sudbury Valley School (and schools like it) focuses on the idea that kids can direct their own learning at their own rate and in subjects that THEY like. I don't want to go too much in depth because the articles and the school website can do that a lot better than I can. This school type struck me as very interesting, but because it's fairly new to me, I don't know exactly what to think of it. I feel that it's better than America's current public school system.

What do you guys think the pros/cons are of this school?
What type of school were you in?
Do you think it's a better school system than the one you were in?
Do you think this school would work if it were to become the norm? (not saying that it will or that they're planning on it, but just wondering).

That's basically the school system I'm in, only I do my work at home. Tutoring is avaliable at the centers for people who need it but for the most part, kids do all the work themselves. And under the state schooling system, it's not homeschool, it's considered a Christian Private School.

I can see how this would be a good school for some kids, but a wreck for others. Take me for an example. When I was in elementary school, if nobody had directed me otherwise, I would have gone on to memorize every piece of info I could find on space. (I don't remember any of it now) This would make me very happy, but I would not have learned anything but facts about space. I think I did okay at my public schools. I really liked the work training I got at my high school. (some marketing classes and working at the school coffee shop). I don't know, these are just my thoughts.

So? My brother does the same, but one interest fades after a couple of years and is replaced by something else. He was never discouraged and he knows a lot about everything.

That's good with your brother, but the same thing doesn't work that way with me personally. I get into something, suddenly lose intrest, and forget ALL of it. The space thing, I can't even tell you the planets in order anymore. I used to have an obsession with fixing computer software and viruses/trojans/whatever. About all I know about that is how to run an anti-virus software. (when I was 'obsessed', I could fix it without software and usually without having to look up the virus/trojan/etc.) I don't know, I just think it varies from person to person. I needed that 'nudge' to pick up skills to function reasonably well in everyday situations, like going to a store and estimating the sale price or total; how to tell the difference between fact and opinion; skills in the kitchen, what to do in an emergency, etc... (That whole emergency lesson was great, my baby cousin was in serious trouble one day and my aunt was freaked out, so I had to handle the 911 call)

It wouldn't prepare you for te real world well.

No matter what career your in you will have some aspects of your job you dislike, a program like this only encourages you to pursue wha tyour interested in, and you will mimick this behavior at work, by either not doing the job, or having an attitude about having to do i because it isn't you thing. Traditional school although somewhat stupid in approach sometimes does introduce you to alot of things so you may learn what subjects interest you most.

WHAT TYPE OF SHITTY LOGIC IS THIS?

Of COURSE you should pursue what interests you! Whomever tells you otherwise should be shot... or something. Your entire argument is a slippery slope fallacy, and real life DOES prepare you for real life.

Damn...I wish I was going to this kind of school. I mean there I'd be able to learn all the mechanics of novel writing, how to properly devise a short story, and all such tidbits of knowledge that a writer needs ^.^ Unlike here where there are barely any english classes that could even further what I already know. I already took the hardest english class in school (AP Literature and Composition) and everything else looks kinda dumb. Not only that but I have to have room for classes that I hold no interest in and I must pass in order to graduate. (I have little interest in science and so find no need to learn a lot about it, I don't see why I need to go through P.E when I have no interest in it, and I definitely don't see why I need to create a student portfolio that shows my interest in my community and my work ethic , which will probably not be used in my application for College, or the SAT and other such crap)
