The gates are locked for security reasons. If you looked through, you could see into the streets.

the gates are now unlocked in order to enter the sound village we wil have you go against another person who wants to join the victor will be decided by me
rules no jutsu only hand to hand combat and throwing weapons ex:throwing knives, shuriken. not fight to death otherwise you will win but you will not be able to enter the academy for a bit. also the person who lost will be able to try again but not against the same person.
