At schools now...everyone thinks that emo is about wearing tight pants and cutting yourself in the dark. seeing as you all arent in my school, cept tj, i want to know what you think. i personally think it's a state of mind. the way you feel about a certain thing, a music, the way you dress and even the way you do your hair who what when why

Oh, lord. "Emo" a state of mind? Is Emo going to be as pretentious as a the Goth scene? "Oh, you're not Goth enough, you don't have the tortured soul I have." Emo is not a state of mind. Its a bloody music genre, (Early Emo is actually pretty good), and a fashion trend, just like Punk and what not. I wouldn't try to make it sound deeper than it is. But, just out of morbid curiosity, what "state of mind" is it?

I have no idea what emo and goth are. I just call kids who wear black and have pouty looks on their faces all the time "losers". Cheer up, dork!
No, but really. If "emo" is a state of mind, it's a "life sucks" kind of thinking. I try to help those people by being their friend, but actually they get happiness or satisfaction out of being sad. It baffles me.

I feel so brainwashed... rolleyes Oh well, I suppose it'll just get tossed into the "I'm not mainstream but I want to be mainstream but not really because thats conforming" bucket.

It's gotten to a point where I don't care what emo is anymore. To me, it's a music genre. And maybe even a clothing style, but that might be pushing it.

"Emotive Hardcore". It wasn't always abbreviated "Emo", and when the music first arrived, (In the late seventies or early eighties, I think) nobody called themselves Emo, because I think it started as an insult that other 'hardcore' kids called people who listened to it. Funny enough, Emo still is used as an insult. So instead of "Go cut yourself, Emo kid." It was "Go listen to Rites of Spring, Emo kid."

Emo is a type of music not a way to describe someone.

The problem is that alot of teens are taking emo up more as a trend rather than anything else...

death.mints The problem is that alot of teens are taking emo up more as a trend rather than anything else... I'll definitely second that. My old high school thrived on trends/fads and was never original... The 'invasion of the emos' was a slow process of people changing into the stereotypical 'emo kid' with the tight pants, dark hair, razors in the pocket...all that good stuff. Pretty soon my school had the four basic 'groups' of emo kids, jocks, nerds, and musical people.
