(I noticed that there are no threads here, so I hope it's ok to post in this subforum. If not please delete this.)

I am starting my first ever real sewing project (I got a sewing machine for my Birthday). Unfortunately I may have picked something rather hard for my first time ever sewing.

The pattern is for a beautiful long oriental vest (not an easy one). And I had to fall in love with a beautiful pink brocade.
Everyone knows that brocade frays right? Well I was wondering if anyone had suggestions to keep it from fraying while I am sewing with it?

Thanks!

Nevermind, I have fixed this problem already.

Incase there is anyone else with this problem I highly recommend the product called Fray Check (by Dritz). All you do is put a tiny bit all around the edges of the pattern you cut out and it stops fraying completely! Just remember to test a tiny bit on a corner of your fabric before you use it to make sure it doesn't show too much (but when it dries it should be nearly invisible).

Yes!
If you do not have Fray Check, you can also use clear fingernail polish, which smells rather toxic for a few minutes, but it dries quickly.

Clear nail polish is a lifesaver. I've lost count of how many times I've used it after catching my tights on something ^^

Oh yes I used to use clear nail polish on my ballet tights all the time to make them last longer.

Maybe I suggest you start out with just modifying clothing you have that you dont like or doesn't fit, or is too old? Or maybe thriftstore clothes?
Modify those and play around before you get into the bigger things.

If you've seen the EGL livejournal, then you may see this AMAZINGLY modified dress...allow me to show you:

Its pretty darn amazing...
I think you should just start out with modifying clothing, then go into your wanted project when you feel comfortable.

Personally I think modifying something is way harder that sewing something entirely confused .

That's lovely! Thanks for showing me.
But I have many people around that can help me with my sewing, so I think I'll be ok with my current project.

Well I started the real sewing part last Sunday. It looks great so far (partly because my mom helped me). I am really excited. Maybe I will post photos of it when I am done.

I have fallen behind a bit as I was extremely busy the past month or so... I plan to get back to it this week though.
