Theres like.....3 sets of characters. Yes, the hard truth. Katakana, Hiragana and Kanji.
I have heard that it is very useful to learn Katakana if your going to go to Japan. I've only learned 4 characters, but I learned them under 20 min. xD

My method was to copy down the letter you wanted to learn, and write it down. Place the normal alphabit beside it as well. Repeat it over and over in writing along with the normal alphabit beside it. In no time I memorized the letter.
Of course I memorized the ones that represented single letters, characters that represent double are probably harder to remember.
