Reviews :: Recommendations :: Critical Analysis Ahh! I come to this subforum and find there are no topics!! This will not do! I will start my own recommendation thread; and thus there will be Reitaicho's Recs! Here is where I will be putting stuff that I think is a good read. I mostly read Naruto fanfictions, and the occasional Harry Potter, so expect a lot of that. I won't be putting up my own fanfiction, as that would be cheating. stare But I will accept requests. Just post a link to a story and I'll read it and evaluate it. If it passes my inspection it will get the official stamp of Reitaicho's Approval! By the way, this is a thread for fanfictions only. And if I don't know the fandom that the story you put up is about, I won't be able to properly evaluate it!

Fandoms I know:
Naruto Harry Potter Artemis Fowl X-Men (though I'm not exactly up-to-date) Teen Titans Bleach Miyazaki films Evangelion Eyeshield 21 FAKE Final Fantasy Full Metal Alchemist Gravitation Ouran High School Host Club Outlaw Star Sukisho
...And I guess those are all the main ones. I can't think of any others that would be important.
But if anyone has a request and doesn't know about the genre, all you have to do is ask!

Okay! To begin... I'll try to give at least an overview of every story I post here; otherwise it would only be a giant list! And where's the good in that? Title: First Everything Author: Ho-sama Fandom: Naruto Pairing: Naruto/Gaara Fiction Rated: M Status: Complete Reitaicho's rating: 5 out of 5! heart Review: This is one of my favorite fanfictions, and definitely one of my top three narugaa stories. (Sadly, my other favs are kind of... not postable. sweatdrop ) It is full of fluff, but there's angst, too. It's a romance told from Gaara's point of view, and the author's understanding of his emotions really brings the story to life. Ho-sama manages to bring the Naruto characters to life such that you can really feel all of Gaara's pain, and even happiness. Plus, this story feels very fresh as compared to all the other narugaa/gaanaru romances out there. Ho-sama has a very different perspective that brings Naruto and Gaara's relationship to a new light. I've yet to come across another one like it, so I go back and read it again whenever I feel like something original! All in all, it's extremely well written, and Ho-sama clearly has a firm grasp of every Naruto character. It's a great pick-me-up (plus the juicier scenes are flawlessly done 3nodding ). If you're into the pairing, you should absolutely read it! It's a must! First Everything

Title: Perspective Author: Uchiki na Kage Fandom: Naruto Pairing: None Fiction Rated: K+ Status: In-progress Reitaicho's rating: 4 out of 5 Review: This is more like a series of vignettes or character sketches on how the Naruto characters relate or interact with Uzumaki Naruto. It's very sweet and the author has a very clear grasp of each different character. It's well written and very original. The first chapter actually made me cry. There! That should be enough incentive to read it! If you're looking for a fresh point of view, or at the least something very original, go read this story. Perspective

Title: Master of the House Author: Hexgar Fandom: Naruto Pairing: None as of yet (Possible NaruHina?) Fiction Rated: M Status: In-progress Reitaicho's rating: 4 out of 5 Review: This is yet another very original story with a very original concept. Naruto has MPD! rofl However, it is really well written. It's not as easy as one would think to bend the truth so flawlessly as to be able to make the reader actually believe that it's logical that Naruto has multiple personalities. I had never believed the concept before, but after reading this I was a convert. Also, the in-depth way the author deals with Naruto's mind's inner workings is fabulous. How often to you come across a psychological fanfiction that is so well done? Master of the House

Title: Hinata's Little Black Book Author: PurpleMoon3 Fandom: Naruto Pairing: None, hints of HinaNaru Fiction Rated: T Status: Complete Reitaicho's rating: 4 out of 5 Review: No story I have posted as of yet has reached such heights of originality. Of course, this one can be argued to be slightly non-canon, but you can't prove it! Hinata? The shy, soft-spoken girl with no self-esteem? Maybe... but she's really a woman with a fiery passion for revenge and flawlessly planned revolutions! You never thought she had it in her, didn't you? Well, of course you didn't, because there's no one who's quieter that Hinata! And all this planning she's got going... of course it's for the one person who inspired it all. Uzumaki Naruto. Best Hinata-centric fic I've ever read. Even if you don't like her, I'd suggest you read, because this will make you like her. Hinatas Little Black Book

Title: Prove the Pervert Wrong Author: KyuubiMan Fandom: Naruto Pairing: None Fiction Rated: M Status: In-progress Reitaicho's rating: 3 out of 5 Review: I hate all the uke!Naruto and the weak Naruto stories. They make me feel sad and inadequate. Plus, from a writer's point of view, it totally blows the whole principle of Naruto's character to pieces. But a good strong!Naruto story can be inspiring! This story is great if you're a little bored and you need a bit of a suspense/adventure pick-me-up. It's very well written and the in-depth characterization makes each character stand out even when the focus is only really on one. This is a story about Naruto continuing to progress and prosper without outside help, once he's been abandoned yet again. But he's lived all his life as an orphan, since when should that bother him!? Yes, it's a little cliche'd, but if you're going to read a similar story, I would suggest this one. Prove the Pervert Wrong

I loved the X-Men: Evolution cartoon. Until they started screwing up the plotline. They tripped into the same pitfall as pokemon and digimon: they started adding unnecessary characters. Kurt was always my favorite! ^^ Title: After the Dance Author: Umi Pryde Fandom: X-Men: Evolution Pairing: Kitty/Lance (Kurt/Amanda?) Fiction Rated: K Status: Complete Reitaicho's rating: 3 out of 5 Review: This was a simple little fluffy oneshot. I've never been much for the Kitty/Lance pairing (I've actually written some Evolution fics of my own with mostly Kurt/Kitty pairings), but I've never been adverse to it. It seems to take place right after the episode where Forge tried to fiddle with Kurt's teleporting abilities, the one with the little dino-raptor things that come out of the dimensional holes during the high school dance. It focuses on Kitty, who is left alone after the ruined party without a date, and longing for a partner: namely, Lance. We watch as the fellow X-Men react to Kitty and Lance's developing relationship, but lacks some needed character-depth. All in all, very cute and simple, an uplifting fifteen minute read. After the DanceI suppose this also works as a constructive advice thread. wink I hope this is helpful to you, Umi Pryde! For such a simple oneshot, I think you were trying to cover too many people. If you wanted to focus on the Kitty/Lance relationship you could have done without the other X-Men and just focused on Kitty's thoughts and feelings as Lance comes to her. I loved Kurt, though! ^^ Poor fuzzball, he's always doing the wrong thing.

It's true, I'm stuck in a bit of a Naruto rut. But I'll try to widen my fandom range for this thread! Title: Hermione Malfoy Author: superscar Fandom: Harry Potter Pairing: Draco/Hermione Fiction Rated: M Status: In-progress Reitaicho's rating: 4 out of 5 Review: It's hilarious! This was one of the first dramione fics I ever read and it cracked me up. The plotline is ridiculous, and rather confused as it nears the end. But this story lead the way in the Harry Potter fanfiction genre for the other dramione humor fics. At the time it was first posted, it was one of the first of its kind, even though now there are many copycats and spin-offs around. But between the laughter factor and the poor plotline, I would have given this story only a 3 out of 5. However, one important thing inflated this story's rating up to a 4: the characters. Superscar has a very firm grasp on the mechanics of the Draco/Hermione relationship, and despite the nonsense of the plot, the emotions and interactions of the characters actually make the story more believable. It's not easy to make such a ridiculous story seem so real. Plus, if you want to read something funny and you don't mind the pairing, I would strongly suggest reading this. If it doesn't make you laugh, then either you have no sense of humor or you're British! wink Hermione Malfoy

My fandom is Yugioh. I'm looking for a critque more on writing style than cannon on the characters (merely because its not listed among those you're familiar with, and I feel I write everyone in character fairly well.) Here is a list of the stories I promote full-heartedly of my own collection. I ask that you pick one (or two, if you like) and critque them. From Mortal Lips My extended pet project. Although my second story about vampires, my first to truly incorpoate the full spectrum of the life of a vampire. Written in first person, a mortal listening to the tale in the late 1930s. Incorporates themes of love, betrayl, lust, homocide, and other such things related to the tragic lives of vampires. Rate 'T' for mild language and violence. Blood Canvas 'Mature' Warning My latest story, a little of 10,000 words. I spent six months working on it, and it alone. I refer to it as my "'07 pet". Written as a prize for the one person that entered my contest. I am told it is a terror and brings about thoughts of 'Silence of the Lambs'. My favorite part of that description? I've never seen the movie or read the book. Rated 'M' for gore, homocide, and masocism. Shadows of the Night -Although my oldest story written in the unaltered style of a well-read fourteen year old, still one of my favorites. Rated 'T' for mild language and homocide. Show Me The Meaning Just a general, incredibly fluffy fiction. Written mainly for the 'fluff factor' as well as the fact I love this pairing, it was began as a tribute to a dear friend of mine who has had both the attention span, as well as the drive, to remain on fanfiction for over five years. Rated 'T' for mild language and minimal adult themes. The Entire End of Me Basically the first story I ever rewrote. Rewritten because of the policies of fanfiction that banned songfiction, it was also the first of my stories to use the loophole of original lyrics. It is an angst/romance piece. Rated 'T' for language and suicide.

Title: Second Time Around Author: Sunfreak Fandom: Naruto Pairing: Jiraiya/Tsunade Fiction Rated: T Status: Complete (It was written before FF.Net added the complete/in-progress thing, so it doesn't actually say) Reitaicho's rating: 4 out of 5 Review: I've never ever been a fan of the Jiraiya/Tsunade pairing. It never seemed to quite fit, to me. Plus, the way many people write it is porny and unrealistic. Therefore, I was very skeptical when I picked up this little oneshot. It was recommended to me by another author, and considering I respect their opinion I decided to read it. From a writer's point of view, aside from any aversions to the pairing, it is very, very well written. It goes into the mind of Tsunade to a depth that you can feel her as she mourns her own shortcomings and longs for what could have been. The concept is intriguing, and definitely a good read, even if you don't like the pairing. Second Time Around

I know next to nothing about Yu-Gi-Oh. But I did take a look at one of your stories, Anilates, to see what I could! Title: From Mortal Lips Author: Setalina Mura Fandom: Yu-Gi-Oh Pairing: ???/??? (I don't know any of the characters!) Fiction Rated: T Status: In-progress Reitaicho's rating: 4 out of 5 Review: From the very first sentences I was strongly reminded of Anne Rice. I've never been a fan of the Victorian style of writing (for I have no patience sweatdrop ), but in this story the style had obviously been modernized to fit the author's needs. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised by a beautiful, and to-the-point, language (unlike the constant drone of old Victorian works). Yet, similar to Anne Rice, the smooth and detached rhetoric made for an ethereal atmosphere that disconnects the reader from reality and brings them to a place where language is matter. This is, in fact, one of my main pet peeves with Victorian writing. The dialogue is old-style and unrealistic. Six year olds don't talk like Oxford scholars! Maybe people talked like that at one time, but that's just my opinion. I didn't read the entire thing, considering I ceased to be able to understand it after the first chapter-- I said I know nothing about Yu-Gi-Oh! However, the writing style leaves little wanting. It is delicate and artistic, and I'm sure to a Yu-Gi-Oh fan (coupled with an actual understanding of the fandom), it is a beautiful piece of work. From Mortal LipsAnilates, I did very much enjoy your story. The prologue was practically a piece of art. (I started feeling a little out of the loop after that.) But the fact that I can so strongly relate it to Anne Rice, though is nothing to be ashamed of-- she is a wonderful writer, is something that I'm a little apprehensive about. I could tell that you were not copying her, and you certainly changed the style to your own. But such a strong influence from one already existing author could detract from your originality in the future. In my opinion, you should try to further hone the language until it becomes something truly of your own. For instance, people don't speak that way anymore. Anne Rice's way of dialogue is far outdated and was really only meant for vampires in the past ages. It would please me, and other contemporary readers, I think, if you were to at the very least modernize that part of your writing. But then again, you can do what you like. Questions of style are also questions of taste. My preferences may go one way, while yours may go another.

Title: Trick Stair Author: Lyra Silvertongue2 Fandom: Harry Potter Pairing: (future) Draco/Hermione Fiction Rated: T Status: Complete Reitaicho's rating: 4 out of 5 Review: For those out there who have the imagination and patience to understand a story written entirely in dialogue, this just might be for you! The premise is this: Draco and Hermione fall completely into a trick stair. You know, the one Neville is always tripping into no matter how many times he does it. Then, Draco and Hermione are stuck in a confined space together with no way out for several hours. Sound like fun? Not for them! But it is highly amusing. You may have to be a Draco/Hermione fan to get a lot of the jokes, but the story itself is an interesting example of character-development-while-experiencing-a-possibly-inescapable-situation-with-a-mortal-enemy. Yes, a classic literary device. It makes for some good laughs with this particular pairing. But, I can't deny it. For a Draco/Hermione fiction, those two are satisfyingly in character. Also, this is just the prequel. The romance doesn't start until the sequel, the first few chapters of which are already up. Trick Stair
