So I was in the GD, the home of trolls and whatnot, and I went into a thread about racist "jokes". It was a troll thread with--you know, racist "jokes". I read them all, hated them and I decided to respond to them in the best way I knew how--apply logic to them.
This one guy got pissed and said I was ruining the "jokes". Of course I was ruining and loving it--it's the only way I can laugh at them--by showing how stupid they are. I didn't tell them they couldn't tell racist "jokes"--that's their freedom of speech right there--I have to respect it.
But, do you what do you guys think? Is it bad to do what I did? I was only coping in my way of coping--making those jokes something I can actually laugh it. I could have flamed and trolled the thread instead of politely putting side comments about each joke as I did.
Discuss--anything pertaining to this topic
Guild mods, does this even belong here? sweatdrop
Edit- And I thought this would make people more active here... sweatdrop

Firstly, nice poll. Hilarious blaugh
Also, yes, this is a great place for this. It could go in Life Issues, but fits in the main forum as well.
Anyway, to point. I think as long as we make racism a big deal, it'll continue to be a problem. Racism is derogatory by definition, but aren't almost all jokes derogatory? Or at least all comedians I see make fun of people. Now there's a line between poking fun and being malicious. You've got to laugh at yourself before you can laugh at others; as long as people aren't oversensitive, a racist joke can be funny. But then you've got people like the GD trolls, who taking something rather harmless and make it nasty. No one can decide who's responsible enough to make such jokes; so as long as people are out there that would ruin it for the rest of us, it looks like racist jokes are a no-no. Eventually, I wish everyone would just forgive and forget, but as long as their are people out there there will be those that exploit things like these jokes. So racist jokes; better safe then sorry, I think they should be discouraged, because while most of us (both the joke-teller and the target) can take a joke, some will take it too far.
I've ranted, tell me how much of that makes sense.

I have no problem with people telling racist jokes, it's just that I can't laugh at them. They're disgusting and dehumanizing. I don't find them funny at all unless I've tampered with them to make the sound stupider than they are.
The only thing is, someone told me to stop it because I was ruining them. I say I shouldn't have to stop twisting them because (1) that's my freedomof speech and (2) I didn't say that they had to stop telling them.
Then I don't get why I'm sensitive/over sensitive if it genuinely hurt and my humor doesn't coincide with theirs.
Here's two jokes I particularly hate:
What do you call a ****** with a peg leg? s**t on a stick! -
What do you call a ****** having sex? Rape!
After that, not only did I feel myself become asexual, I felt so dirty and went to take a bath to scrub the s**t off of me.

Well see, those I don't consider jokes. Those aren't jokes. I don't really care for dictionary definitions, but to me a joke is a lighthearted play on words, with the aim of exposing something amusing. For instance, ever heard of the show MAD TV? They did a sketch during which a black man totaled up the reparations from slavery, and found that currently, they "owe". It was the delivery that really sold the joke, but everyone found that funny, and it wasn't really insulting. I guess you and I were talking about different things; the jokes you cite there are what way beyond "taking it too far".

i completely disagree with any form of hurtful racism, although i do think that sometimes people take racism to seriously and are too sensitive, i think bullying is the problem, i don't think discrimination due toi race is any different to age or gender etc.

Personally, I can't stand the use of such racist jokes because they are, as you so beautifully named, dehumanizing.
To me, what you did is perfectly fine since the jokes were not intended as harmful. For the other people had little right to argue since you are using another tactic to make the joke acceptable to you.
Jokes are not meant to cause pain but they can and do sometimes. If what is being said is offending an entire race of people, your freedom of speech does not compare. Just how you can't use your freedom to cause panic, you can't use it, ethically, to cause harm.

I see.... well, the guy said I wouldn't say anything about white jokes or any others. But he doesn't know me or that if had there been threads like that (they never seem to exist since the world is so focused on blacks for some strange reason--well I found one and broke the jokes), I would do as I always do, make the "jokes" into actual "jokes".
A sample of my response to a joke: What do you call two blacks on one bike? Organized crime (Or, they could be sharing a bike that belongs to one of them--ever think of that?)
I mean... I like dry sarcasm a lot... or some with a bitter sting to it and that's what appeals to me. That's what makes me laugh--preying on stupid stuff.
It's not like I attacked them personally or smacked them with facism. neutral

I think you responded just fine because it's not like you were harassing them or anything. They should have been aware that not everyone will like those jokes and this being a forum, they will probably say it.
I don't like racist OR sexists jokes for the reasons you mentioned. I think there's a difference between a racist joke and a joke about race/racism.
Racist jokes say one is more superior or inferior.
Jokes about race just poke fun at stereotypes, and in the end, don't mean to say that someone is inferior or superior because of it, sort of going into the strangeness of it. Hopefully I'm making sense.
I definitely don't mind seeing jokes poking fun about stereotypes/racism/sexism. Personally, I think racists/sexists deserve to be made fun of.

Racist jokes are only funny sometimes, and only a few of them are at all funny. Most of them are just plain messed up. I don't even know why they call them jokes, I just call them "stereotype statements put in a comical manner" stare . And don't worry about telling them off, I think that's funny, too blaugh . It's freedom of speech, after all, isn't it? That guy doesn't have the right to criticize what you had to say stressed . So what if you ruin it? They speak out, you speak out, too 3nodding .

That was beautifully executed. I find racist jokes to be offensive on many levels, but I would never consider what you did. Good job. Many people are cool with racist jokes, yet I feel the word joke is too forgiving, so instead I will refer to them as remarks. I dislike them because they have a nasty habit of getting out of hand. A simple joke about fried chicken can turn into a nasty fist fight at a store. Everything echoes and racist remarks have a habit of nasty repercussions.

It depends on the joke, really. I don't mind Polack/Italian/Blonde jokes or whatever, though I know many people who really loathe them. (And yes -- I am part Pole, my mom is largely Italian, and my hair used to be naturally blonde.)
The 's**t on a stick' joke is utterly tasteless, but many 'racist' jokes poke fun at other people's, infamous racism. ("What do you call a black man with a nice car in Los Angeles?" "Probable Cause!")

To be honest I would have done the same thing you did I take joy in pushing people to the edge and then stopping just before they blow up its so much fun. But none of those jokes are even funny they need to try harder.

I counter racism in my own manner. Being out in the countryside, we don't get very many black kids at our school.
(If someone screams politically incorrect about the phrase "black kid", kindly remember that it's a means of identification, not a racist remark.)
Back to the point, whenever I hear a n****r "joke" in a discussion I'm a part of, I kindly turn and tell them my grandfather's black. Seeing as I'm pretty much the whitest kid on the planet (pale, blue eyed, blonde) it's great to watch them stumble over themselves.
My gramps really is black, by the way.
