Dedicated GAIA Moderator
Gaara
Hello
I have a question about a PM I received from a Dedicated GAIA Moderator.
I am not going to be on Gaia very much because I recently gave birth to my first child. I've been on Gaia since 2003 with my main account. I've noticed that almost all (if not all) of the original names from the anime Naruto that were taken by Gaians have been abandoned expect for my account. Because of this I wanted to pass my name onto someone I thought wouldn't abandon it or misuse it. I have several acquaintances on this site that have asked for the name; also strangers do the same thing. I have worked hard to keep this name in good standing and I wouldn't want to abandon it. I'd like to give someone else the chance to use it.
I have a guild set up for a contest in which anyone can enter (the deadline was June 15th so it is over) to write an essay on why they would like to have the name. I did state that the essay was for the name only, no items. The gold on this account is minimal and that was stated also. My plan was to pick a winner and give them access to this name, and then if they chose they can change the password making it solely their account.
I was told by a Dedicated GAIA Moderator that I am not allowed to give away my account, and if I wanted to give my name away I could hold the contest, pick a winner then change my name. I would then have to tell the winner that I changed my name and they could change their name to Gaara. The problem I have with that is; there is no way that the person that wins the contest will have a 100% guarantee at actually getting the name. So many people sign up to Gaia everyday and a lot of people watch my account.
Why would it be illegal for me to give my account away, no items, minimal gold (around 2k) when the only thing I am giving away is the name?
I was told "This is an informal warning, however, failure to change your contest to simply give out the name will result in a formal warning and possible ban from Gaia Online.' I did change the contest to make sure it complied with the PM I received, however the contest was only for the name from the beginning.
I will not risk getting banned but I would like to know if I can give the name out the way I want to (via: giving a password to the winner so they can access my account).

You are right, there is no guarantee that if you change your name, that the person you designate will be the one that is able to obtain what used to be your name. In fact, given the new username creation rules, I would say it would be impossible to do a name switch like that. This is due to the "base name" thing. Where only one account will be able to have the same base name. However, this did not apply retroactively. So out of prior usernames, may people have variants of the "gaara" name (like "_gaara_" or "~gaara~". but not like "gaara of the sand" or other extended versions of the name).
Regardless, the point is, someone else probably also has the same base name as you currently. If you change your name, you and anyone else will be blocked from taking your exact spelling because of someone else with the same base name. That is someone with a name like "_gaara_" would be now be preventing anyone else from NEWLY acquiring that name.
The only way you could effectively transfer your name would be to give away your account. However, this is indeed prohibited. So you will probably not be able to continue with this contest.
Sorry.
