I just beat DQ8 yesterday 100% with 121 hours and 52 minuets clocked into it.
This game if for those of you who have ALOT of spare time on your hands (Like me blaugh ) It has one of the best storylines I've ever played through. It's one of my personally favorite games.
The only thing you might hate about this game is that there are soo many cutscenes! (not as bad as Star Ocean's) They are perfectly voice acted and the graphics are cell shaded... in a good way.
If you've ever played a Dragon Quest game you should know the battle system. If not it's term based. Heres some screenshots of gameplay:
