Modern scientific theory states that there are up to 118 elements in the universe, based on electron configurations and the idea of the proton, neutron, and, now, the quark. These scientists, of course, are wrong. Fundamentalists state that there is no such thing as an element, only things that God created, and God tells them how to behave. These Fundamentalists are also wrong. Existentialists don’t believe in anything except their own minds, and, even though no one can logically prove them wrong, they still are.

The Ancient Greeks, however, believed that there were only four elements, those of Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire. They, too, are wrong. By exactly 20%.

Someone once said that Hell was empty, and that all the Demons were here on Earth. They neglected to mention that the like was true of Heaven and the Angels, as well. However, though they are both more powerful and capable than most humans, the drawback comes when one takes into account that humans are much, much smarter than either Angel or Demon. Your below-average janitor is a genius compared to a mentally gifted ethereal being, and thinks higher thoughts in a single day than they do in a millennium.

But what brought the Angels down and the Demons up?

The year is 2037, and the world is a no-man’s land. The beginning of the century’s wars in the Middle East have slowly taken control of the rest of the planet, creating mass sectarianism and carnage on a scale unseen before. The average lifespan worldwide has dropped from 70.1 back down to 42.6, near what it was in the ages before modern medicine. And yet, the population continues to increase. In the 30 years that have passed, the world population has more than tripled to 25 billion heads as people have decided that life is too short to spend a night alone.

And now the combined forces of the Mysterious have decided that enough is enough and that the time is nigh for all of this to end. It has long been known that a God is only as strong as the sum of its believers. It is also easy for people to transition from believing in their Gods to believing in the institutions that represent them. And that, with the combination of World Wars III through VII, means that all of the Earthly Gods, from Yaweh to Allah to the different tribal Gods, are all either weak or dead. Thus, the various figures of the different religions have manifested themselves in the universe and are now making their way to Earth, to conquer the now-Godless population. Also because they’ve decided that humanity is completely out of control.

The forces of the Mundane, however, would rather that the other powers keep their hands off of Earth. In the defense of itself and its inhabitants, the great mother Gaia (not the name of the site, the Earth as a sentient being) has decided to send her children up to defend the world from those who are fed up with the way things are being carried out. Two daughters, two sons, and the other one.

Of course, Gaia wasn’t stupid enough to send up her children as babies. There wasn’t time for that. She sent them up with the age just before the relative primes of their lives. Her oldest son is Terro of the Earth. Then comes her daughter Ventua of the Wind, then her son Aquo of the Water, and finally the youngest daughter, Pyra of the Fire.

Which leaves the last Element. The Element of Surprise. Surlaw.

And this is where you come in.

The outside forces are closing in on the Earth, and the different peoples of the Earth are tearing themselves apart even as this danger nears. The only people to stand between Humanity’s life and its death are the five Elements: Terro, Ventua, Aquo, and Pyra. And Surlaw.

Who are you going to be? Will you be a war-torn human, a conquering Mystery, or a defending and healing Element?

1) Standard stuff, guys. You've been around, you know no godmodding and all that.
2) Minimum of 2 paragraphs per post. Just to ensure a bit of literacy. Again, this shouldn't be necessary, but I'd like us all to improve our abilities.
3) Be creative. If you think of some wild and crazy idea that we've never seen before, go for it, as long as it doesn't break rule #1.
4) Have fun. If you're not having fun, then what's the point? Really, guys. Enjoy yourselves.
5) Post in the chatterbox saying you've read the rules. That way, I can tell that you've read them easily, and it advertises to everyone else that they ought to read them as well.

The Cast, also known as Profiles so Far:

Character Name: Surlaw, AKA Bobby Henderson, AKA Eyebrow
Race: Surprise Element
Age: 3 Hours
Weapons/Powers/Abilities: The ability to create surprise in people in the most effective way possible, be it sneaking up behind them, having a lawn gnome spawn in their back seat just before they look in the rearview mirror, pull a fully functional Greataxe from his left nostril, suddenly switch genders, or what have you.
Bio/History: Surlaw has always existed. It is due to him that life evolved from soup, that the Spanish Inquisition ever happened, that the meteor killed the dinosaurs, and that Ben Affleck ever became famous. However, this is the first time that he has ever been incarnate, and he is constantly in a state of pleasant surprise at his surroundings.

Surlaw was spawned at 7:26 in the morning, which is not significant except in that it gave him plenty of time to enjoy the day. Where he was spawned was the center of an intersection in Dublin during Rush Hour, and how he was spawned was without any clothes. He was shortly arrested for Public Indecency, and laughed at the officer's heavy Irish accent. On the way to the Police Station, they crashed into a camel mannequin outside of a grain store that happened to be across from a clothing outlet. While the officer was busy figuring out what exactly happened, Surlaw nipped into the clothing outlet and shoplifted enough for a decent outfit. Then a surprising chain of events led to his arrival at the Dublin airport with enough money for a ticket to, roughly, anywhere (extraplanetary destinations noninclusive).
Physical Description: Whether he is male or she is female, one thing remains constant about Surlaw: complete unremarkability. He/she always has an average face, average height and girth, brownish, or maybe blondeish, or, you know, make that blackish, no, redish hair, eyes that change color based on who's looking at them and what color they would most like to see, and a physique that defies the memory. However, one other thing remains constant with Surlaw's appearance, and that is the Flaw. The Flaw is always the same with the body that he has chosen, but changes with each body that he chooses. The Flaw is always there, be it a large pimple on the side of Surlaw's nose, a minor burn scar on his/her arm, a receding hairline, an amputation, or a third n****e (which was quite popular, as Surlaw happened to be female at the time).
Personality: Surlaw is ... fun. Surlaw is spontaneus, concise, and inventive. Surlaw is always feeling mischevious and amused. Surlaw knows how to elicit gasps from any number of people, and does all that he can to do so. Life is a joke, and Surlaw is in on it.
Extra: Surlaw has a penchant for muffins, lawn gnomes, necromancy, and class clowns.

Character Name: Aquo
Race: Water Element
Age: 1
Weapons/Powers/Abilities: Aquo uses his manipulation of water mostly as a defense or for healing. However, in order for him to be able to use his powers, there must be water in the area. When there is, Aquo can do various things. Usually, Aquo can freeze the water he is manipulating, creating either a shield or a spear, however they are quite weak and easily break; he can just use the pressure from water, by firing that element at an enemy, however, because of his age, he can only manage a small splash; he can also use water as a healing technique. To do this, Aquo creates a bubble of water around the person he is trying to heal and then is able to send healing waves of energy into the bubble. However, this requires all of his concentration; it should usually be done when he is not fighting. At the moment, it can only heal light wounds.
Bio/History: Aquo is the youngest brother. Being born just one year before Gaia was forced to send her children up to protect Earth, Aquo has therefore been able to spend one year of his life in peace. During that time, Aquo has been in the spiritual lagoon which Gaia had created for him the day he was born. And there he has spent his days, floating within the waters... alone.
Physical Description: If one looked upon Aquo for the first time, one would think that he was a girl because of his smooth features, his slender form and his long eyelashes which flow over his bright azure eyes. Not only that, but his aqua blue hair flows down past his shoulders to about his waste. This, the elemental takes great pride in and therefore takes good care of it (no doubt since he is always swimming in the water), therefore giving it a smooth, shiney and healthy appearance (and for this, he would be the perfect model for a pantene pro-v commercial). Oh, and clothes? There are none. Deal with it.
Personality: Because of his constant state of seclusion, Aquo rarely talks and therefore prefers to be left alone. However, when he is forced to be around others, Aquo always stays in the shadows, preferring to watch in silence, which is why people may feel uncomfortable around him. And when he does speak, his words may seem cold, since he does not have much practice conversing with other creatures, even his own family.
Extra: Aquo (when away from the water or his lagoon) always carries a flask, which no doubt contains water...

Character Name: Pyra
Race: Element
Age: Almost 1
Weapons/Powers/Abilities: The ability to control and start fire. Of course she hasn't completely gotten used to instant combustion. In other words, she must have something to burn in her hand to start a fire. She can use small twigs to start small fire balls which she can throw at people to ward them off. She can create a small blue flame which will very easily warm, but not harm, she just can't make it very big.
Bio/History: Born of the flames in a roaring forest fire, she resided in the burning house until the flames were completely gone. Soon after, she was found by firefighters and wrapped up in a blanket She had been taken to an orphanage where she was clothed and fed. With the was fire really is, she had trouble controlling it, and accidentally burned down the building. She had ran back to the forest, the trees helping her learn to control the fire within her.
Physical Description: She has short, bright red hair that ends in a bright orange. Her eyes are a deep orange and if one would look close enough, they could see the fire in her eyes. Her height could tell others that she looked no more than seven, but her mind was deceiving. She wears a simple torn dress with a large shawl to keep her shoulders warm. Despite the rest of the clothing, she wears no shoes or socks to cover up her feet.
Personality: When you first meet her, she seems like a little angel, a pure and innocent little being. If you stay on her good side, she'll stay the cute and innocent being. But if you actually get on her bad side, she'll become as dangerous and destructive as a roaring fire.
Extra: She carries a large walking stick that she can use the end to set a flame when in danger, along with a couple little twigs.
